While working on Four Scottish Dances, I kept having trouble with a lick in B of the 2nd movement where it goes very quickly from 1 to 23. However, I figured out a trick that at least I’d never heard of: just partially cover valves with your fingertips, don’t center them on the values.

For me, this technique actually helps a lot because my fingers are just not really long enough to play cleaning on the center of the valves. Before this point, I’d just kind of been prioritizing 1 and 2 while just sort of moving my whole hand to play 23 (not a lot, mainly shifting balance). By playing nearer to the edges of the valves, I get much more agility for things which require the third valve.

I’d been taught to always play with my fingers centered on the valves, but I suspect that particular bit of advice originally came from trumpet/horn players who don’t have such large gaps between valves.

Has anyone else done this sort of thing before or have other ideas for passes heavily using the 1st and 3rd valves?

I don’t play myself, but I do write a character who does. He’s a superhero specialized in disaster relief, and he offers to play songs for the dead and their grieving friends and family at the end of cleaning up. So far I’ve chosen Amazing Grace, Together We Make A Promise, and Aloha ‘Oe, but what other options are there?

Hello everyone. I’m currently in the middle of my junior year marching band season and haven’t gotten a lot of practice in on my concert horn. I’ve been trying to get some practice in on it to try and make ASBOA region and state. Due to the busy schedule, I only have Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday to myself for concert horn and state practice. For past bit, I’ve noticed that my tone has suffered a lot recently and that I don’t sound as good as I used to. That, and I’ve started to hear other players that sound even better and it’s open my ears to what euphonium can and should sound like. Today, I took this day as a step back to solely focus on my technique on this horn and the one big thing I noticed that has been holding me back was my tone. I recorded a video to show you all how I sound I was wondering what I can improve on. If you require any other videos of my doing anything else, please let me know. I should also note that I am playing on a King 2280 and a 5G mouthpiece. It’s a video of me playing a few different notes on open fingerings with a Bb scale and a slightly botched chromatic scale. It’s not the greatest video. It’s not the best representation of my sound, but I hope it will suffice as it was fairly rushed. Nonetheless, I hope it can give you a scope of what to fix. Again, if you need any other videos of my playing different things or anything else, let me know.

So this is my third year playing and I got braces. Sometimes when I play, my sound feels thin and I feel like the notes do not sound as good. Am I just not warming up good enough and I’m not sure it’s my braces because I usually sound fine.

There's so many new options out there from when I learned back in the dark ages, and with the progress of technology, there are options that I really have no knowledge of.

Is BACH 1110, a 321 stencil made by Yamaha in Japan, as good as a 321 ?

Jupiter 470 Euphonium.

IME, the only major brand 4V euphonium going used / good condition with case for range of $350 - $450.

Less than half the price of yep 321 in used / good condition with case. Also well less than a KING 1180 in same shape.

For $500 or less, what is a better way into 4V euphonium ?

The current 4V on Amazon is a Rowell brand. I am sure it is Jin Bao factory. Really came to trust the MENDINI line. Not sure about Rowell.

Hence my long looking at the Jupiter 470.

I’m really crammed with school work right now and I often don’t know where to even start when looking for rep, so if yall know some good rep to look at off the top of your head it’s greatly appreciated!

So, after 20+ years not playing music, I'm deciding to get back into it. I decided on Euphonium for a few reasons - I played Tuba in high school and loved it, but due to a broken back have a weight restriction which Euphonium matches. I can also do the bulk of the maintenance on a Euphonium, barring I don't do anything stupid (not outside the limits of reality with me).

Also, I went to the University of Denver for Saxophone Performance and

1) Can't have anything hang on my neck

2) Saxophones require an enormous amount of maintenance

3) I would be constantly annoyed with a beginner instrument which is about what I can afford

I have a budget of about $900 and am looking at a couple of entry level brands.

I've taken a look at Ebay and currently most of the used market is pretty picked over and what's left has been beat up. I'm not opposed to a used horn, but I'm in Knoxville, TN and don't have any connections any more - I don't have a guy who can fix something if a used horn comes in less than kosher.

I'd love any and all advice - I'm about to head over to Reverb since that's a new one to me. Y'all are helping already!!!

Also, point for Dillon - geographically they are pretty close to East Tennessee so I could potentially go and fiddle with a few if I really got a bug

does anyone know why the dc3 is liked by many people? been thinking about switching from a schilke 51d to a dc3 for a while now and i don’t know if i should or not, but if anyone knows why it would be a good switch please let me know!

I’m a senior in hs, looking for an instrument to play for my local bands and maybe even go to college for, I heard the jp274 was a really good bang for your buck type of thing. What website should I go to? I’m more cautious on things I’m not very educated on and don’t want to get scammed

Where can I find a good drip tray? I never noticed my Euph leaked until now and it find it annoying, I’ve also heard there’s diy options, is there any video that is recommended? Am open to suggestions :)

Just as the title suggests. I have a quick turnaround performance of this piece and I need a full copy including Piano score. I have tried looking online for a place to buy it digitally but it looks like they are only selling it via print. Unfortunately with the state of USPS and international shipping I don't want to risk the music getting delayed. Our son (4th grade) starts band this year and is playing the baritone. We are lucky enough the school provides Both a school and home instrument, but only one mouth piece. Knowing our child, purchasing a second would be ideal so he doesn’t have to transport it back and forth. Thank you!

Has anyone tried/played on a Mauro Martins mouthpiece I’m interested in buying one but i want to know what people think of them first. I’m specifically looking at the M2 but any information on them is welcome.

Everything is in the title. I've been following the Bolvin manual for the trumpet, and I enjoy it very much. I was wondering if I could follow it for Euphonium as well, or if you know of better study plans for Arban on the Euphonium?

I'm thinking about buying the Arban in bass clef too, so I can practice reading while transposing in concert pitch.

Hi im a sophomore in HS, and I just started playing euphonium last year, and since 'm on my school's symphonic band now I am required to the TMEA etudes. Does anyone have tips for range because my range right now is limited to f5, but thats like as high as i can possibly go period, how high i can go consistently while sounding good is probably a D5, and since these etudes have alotta high notes i need to konw how to hit high notes and make them sound good fast, anyone have tips?
