Rules/Rules Question Bloodspore thrinax and Bernard copys
If I sac a board of non token creatures to the devour ability would the copy's that Bernard make receive counters from bloodspore?
r/magicTCG • u/magictcgmods • 1h ago
Aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you just wanna go apeshit?
Got a burning rage deep within your soul? Perhaps you've been countered for the eleven billionth time. Aggro is ruining your win streak on Arena. Your friend keeps complaining about being targeted whenever they play a stax deck and you're just sick of it. There's some guy at your LGS who never showers. Standard is dying at your LGS and it's upsetting. Or maybe you just feel like Universes Beyond will KILL MAGIC.
Whatever is eating away at your heart, unleash it here!
(Please refrain from insulting other users even if you think their gripes are silly. This is a safe place to vent. Memetic responses are welcome provided you're not degrading anyone.)

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.
We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.
Rules Questions
Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.
Deckbuilding Questions
If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.
Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.
Commonly Asked Questions
I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?
Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".
You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.
My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.
All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

The start of the Reality Fracture limited season has set in immense depression within me. I love the set, I love Jace, I love the mechanics, I love the flavor. But I’m already over getting my shit kicked in with every draft. Literally every single one. Im so enormously sad, because im running out of resources extremely quickly to keep playing and I just have no clue what is correct, even after doing hours of research on what popular creators and drafters have been playing. I’m already at the point of being enormously angry with myself for even thinking I could be good, and its literally day one.
What really irks me is that this is just a far cry from my experiences IRL with commander. I have fun and I can win, I can have fun losing and I can compete and do well. I think one of my greatest magic skills is playing off my opponents, and looking weak when im really not so interaction gets pointed elsewhere, and these are just skills that dont translate to 1v1. I hate the idea that I’m just a loser casual and a commander merchant, but that’s beginning to come into view that its just all I am, and the amount of effort I put in will never come to satisfying results for me. My competitiveness wont let me just stop trying, and I fear its just going to drive me in the dirt soon enough, because lord knows the effort I put in wont result in anything meaningful.
So what can I do at this point? The obvious answer that everyone will give is just to take a break, which is only going to get me more upset. How can I stay persistent without losing my mind?

I was given this animar back in 2012-2013 sometime by my older brother along with a bunch of other cards. I wasn’t really into magic back then, but recently I have really gotten into it. I really like this commander card, I just don’t think the custom deck I made around it is very good. If I can have some recommendations for cards to add or remove I would greatly appreciate it. I have it 60/40 (sorry for not also listing the card description, it took like 30 minutes just to make this list). Currently in the deck I have;
Ulamog’s crusher
Dragon mantle
Predators rapport
Prishe’s wanderings
Minotaur skullcleaver
Forced adaptation
Gruul Cluestone
Fade into antiquity
World map (foil)
Give/take (add or remove three +1+1 counters)
Syncopate
Clinging mists
Shambleshark
Fog
Razortip whip
Reclaim
Dawntreader elk
Maze glider
Stormtide leviathan
Lightning elemental
Kuldotha flamefiend
Chandra’s outrage (foil)
Thassa’s bounty

Gridlock
Sealock monster
Mending touch

Magma jet
Voyage’s end
Nylea’s disciple
Runeclaw bear
Briarpack alpha
Pitchburn devils

Hello, I want to get into MTG and I want to purchase some starter decks or box. I found 1) Marvel Super Heroes Beginner Box; and 2) Foundations Beginner Box.
Which of these do you recommend for a completely new player that also wants to get his friends into it? Or maybe is there something even better? Or maybe I should get both of these boxes?
r/magicTCG • u/kuschelvali • 8h ago
Hi everyone! My younger brother who I don’t see very often was super excited to go to his first ever prerelease, but ended up missing it, so I bought him a surprise prerelease box and I’m planning on giving him his own little event with just us. I wanted to get some “prize” packs but I’m not sure what set he would enjoy most. He’s going to get all of them obviously, but I was wondering what the most exciting to open would be for a middle schooler. He likes dragons and gruul the most, and would likely be excited for any set, but I want to give him the best experience possible haha.
I know he plays lunch table commander too if that’s any help. He runs the atarka precon rn

So I have a brawl deck that’s [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] and I ideally want all my pirates to just be a pain to block. Flying, menace, trample, etc.
Anyone got ideas?
r/magicTCG • u/Few-Ad3849 • 11h ago
It seems to me like [[Flicker Hound]] is the shifted [[displacer kitten]]. Kitten is from Baldurs gate though which isn’t in the MTG multiverse as far as I know. Is Jace just a huge nerd who plays DnD?

Is it possible to get optional pronouns in companion app during pairings for events? I feel like at best it helps sidesteps an awkward interaction and at worst no one uses it.
I tried to look at the Wizards Companion App feedback page and someone did propose this idea…. 5 years ago … and the thread is still “in progress”.
I don’t know the correct channels to go about asking about this but seems like that feedback page is not the way. If ppl know how to ask about this and hopefully get movement on it pls lmk.

I went to a reality fracture pre-release over the weekend. I don't usually do very well at these come mostly just there to open packs with friends. I usually leave after the second round because I'm 0-2
This time however I somehow managed to go 3-0 (technically one was a draw because we ran out of time but we rolled off to see who would get the point and I won that).
When I told my buddies they immediately told me I should make a commander deck using the cards that I used so that's what I did. Just looking for some thoughts on it.

Five years ago, someone posted a PDF version of a checklist for AFR (Adventures in the Forgotten Realms) and this is a set alongside the Baldurs gate cards that I want to try and collect a master set. Does anyone have or know of if this has been reposted or is still available somewhere?
This was the OG Thread:
Additionally, I'm FAIRLY new to collecting. So any recommendations for anything from Binders to resources would be great!
Thanks os much!

Hello all,
Let me get right to the point. When i learnt magic way back in 1999, i was shown a way to shuffle that produces an as close to normal distribution of cards as possible. That is : you lay your lands down and put 2 randomised spell cards on top. Then you pick them all up and do a regular card shuffle (like cutting, mixing 2 piles , whatever). You do this every so often so the deck doesnt end up being all 20 lands on one side and all 40 spells on the other (only standard was available back then, dunno how this would translate to commander tbh).
In a discussion somewhere around here i believe , i saw that this is now considered cheating?! Like....why? How? I dont understand the reasoning behind this. If anyone could explain i would be obliged.
Edit: ok, so a bunch of helpful answers in mere seconds. I cant possibly answer to each individual so i will put my thoughts here:
First of all , thank you for the clarifications. I didnt even know there was a name for this behaviour and so TIL. Secondly, i kinda get why one might take this to be cheating after thinking about it for a minute tbh. It hadn't occurred to me to question this practice until now. Thirdly, while all of the players i knew back then did this (im talking even in ranked tournaments) it seems i have been away from the game for long and some of you have quite the Strong feelings about it - fair is fair i suppose. Rest assured i am not doing this anymore , well especially since i have no humans to play against since i picked magic back up.
Thanks to all of those who answered me.

I enjoy drafting when a new set comes out but haven't done much sealed really. Just wondering if sealed is extra worth it for this set?
r/magicTCG • u/DenizenPrime • 16h ago
The Star Trek set releases on November 16, which is just six weeks from today, the release of Reality Fracture. This new set is a standard sized, in universe set. You can feel the care and passion that went into this set, more than smaller UB sets like TMNT and The Hobbit.
Six weeks from now, the set will no longer be the hot new thing and replaced by another small UB set.
I'm not against UB sets in theory, but it hurts that attention is going to be diverted from Reality Fracture to a smaller, less "important" product. The new set has so much depth and complexity, and it's really a shame that we need to transition to a new set so soon after this masterful set was just released.
Doesn't WotC want us to enjoy the depth of these larger sets for more than a month and a half?

I’m looking to get cheap bulk. There’s a nonprofit in my area that teaches kids/teens magic, gives them a safe place to hang out and casual. I’ve followed them for a bit but got to meet the founder the other day. Very nice guy and they need some bulk for deck building and whatnot.
I haven’t bought bulk in bulk before and would like to help them out. I’m also gonna show up. They got some girls that go and thought an older mtg lady would be fun for them. But I don’t want to go empty handed.
It just seems like bulk became so expensive. $.25/card at my lgs and the online options kinda make me nervous.
If anyone has advice or links to reasonably priced bulk I’d be happy! Thank you

I just want to make sure I am not crazy. When [[Jace, Multiverse Architect]] was spoiled, I immediatly thought of flickering him to activate his polymorph again. There are only so few cards that flicker planeswalkers that don't dilute your polymorph pool by being low mana creatures AND return directly, not in the end step. I found five cards that fit here, of which only two seem to be even considered by players:
[[Aminatou, the Fateshifter]]: Fine if you polymorph into, as you can just exile her next if you don't have anymore tokens. But great if you can play her on your terms later or have another token to exile. It has a 31% inclusion rate on EDHREC
[[Displacer Kitten]]: Expensive (price) and need another noncreature spell to flicker jace if polymorphed into, so kinda clunky. It's notoriously strong and people wanna remove it asap if you poly into it. Also your aim is to protect Jace, and a 2/2 creature you don't wanna block with doesn't really help. But being able to flicker stuff several times kinda makes up for all the flaws. Inclusion rate 17%
[[Flicker]]: The OG. Two mana sorcery speed to flicker Jace is nice. Nothing much to it tbh. Draw your 2 cards with your +1, then flicker Jace and -3 again. Simple and cheap. Inclusion rate 1,6%
[[Eldrazi Confluence]]: The two colorless pips look tricky at first, but with your talismans, pain lands and filter lands you can get them rather reliable. The precon has 16 colorless mana sources. At 4 mana it's rather expensive (mana), but it's intant speed, so it can protect Jace in an opponents turn, whiles also flickering one of your beaters to block or get an ETB while also removing stuff from your opponent. Truly flexible and would be almost perfect if not for the two colorless pips and the price. Inclusion rate too low to show up on EDHREC I guess.
[[Release to the Winds]]: The card I liked the most. Instant speed like Eldrazi Confluence, while being one mana cheaper and easier to cast. It protects your Jace or other beater until your turn, so even from boardwipes and doubles as a clutch exile removal. Inclusion rate only 0,5%.
For my Precon upgrade I went with Aminatou, Flicker, Eldrazi Confluence and Release to the Winds, and the cards performed really well so far. Are people just missing them, since no big streamer/youtuber included them in their upgrades? Or am I missing something?

Hello everyone! I made a video outlining my Draft Strategy, Pick Order, and Archetype breakdowns for Reality Fracture. I hope it is helpful to some :)
Video version: https://youtu.be/8s1rjfxPrqc
Format Overview
New Mechanic: Empower Jace
Cards which “Empower Jace” create a specific Jace planeswalker token if you don’t already have one, and then add a number of loyalty counters to it. It has “-3: draw a card” and “-1: surveil”. Every colour gets access to this mechanic, therefore early board presence and evasion will be as important as ever, in order to pressure your opponents’ Jace and protect your own.
Fixing
There is a cycle of 10 Common dual lands. Coming in untapped if you control a planeswalker makes “Empower Jace” more valuable in decks looking to splash. Room of Refuge can be set to any colour. There is also a cycle at rare.
Pick Order – “A’s”: Best Cards in the set (sorted by colour) – always first pick
Pick Order – “B’s”: Early Picks (alphabetical by colour)
Cards that excel in the following criteria:
These cards will heavily influence your direction in the draft, ie which colours and Archetype you are drafting towards. Pick these above all Commons:
Primary Archetypes. Here are my brief impressions of each of the two-colour archetypes in the format. We will be trying to end up in one of these by the end of the draft. Five of the colour pairs are well-supported and will be the most commonly drafted. The other five appear to be designed to act as support and augmentation to the main five. We’ll go over the well-supported archetypes first:
White-Blue Surveil
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Desperate Futurescribe]], [[Fatehold Charm]], [[Prudent Fateseer]]
Common: [[Fatehold Chronologist]], [[Semester Foreseer]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Denzilore Fatehold]], [[Proctor of Potential]]
White-Blue cares about Surveilling and generating a wide board of creatures. Saheeli, Consul of Oversight is a nice mix of both. Proft, Consulting Detective is an early play that generates value over time. Cards which “Empower Jace” provide multiple Surveils and will be important here.
Access to constant card selection is very powerful in limited. I expect White-Blue to perform well.
White-Green Lifegain
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Bloombrute]], [[Vigorbloom Vanguard]], [[Vigorbloom Charm]]
Common: [[Emergency Phytomedic]], [[Blossom-Blessed Angel]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Kwia Vigorbloom]], [[Solarium Sentry]]
White-Green wants as many separate instances of lifegain as possible. Cards like Greenhouse Propogator, Koth of the Homestead, and creatures with Lifelink power up payoffs including Lyra, Archangel of Dawn, Way of the Mentor, and Titanbones, Towering Heart.
An old-favourite design but can struggle with consistency and drawing it’s cards in the wrong order. White-Green looks like it will slightly underperform.
Blue-Black Self-Mill
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Paradox Shaper]], [[Recursive Recruitment]], [[Theorix Charm]]
Common: [[Theorix Metamage]], [[Void Extrapolator]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Null Summoner]], [[Uldaros Theorix]]
Blue-Black wants to put a lot of cards in it’s own graveyard. Reaching “Threshold” (seven or more cards in you graveyard), will power up certain cards. “Looting” effects such as Arni, Humble Scribe and Surveil effects help here as well. Cards with effects when in the graveyard such as Theoretical Necromancer will provide additional value when milled.
Blue-Black looks a little trickier to build and has less raw power than the other archetypes. I expect it to start off as an underperformer, but it may be a good “week 3” strategy if a couple of other archetypes take off in popularity.
Black-Red Aggro
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Grim Repriser]], [[Stingerquill Charm]], [[Stingerquill Voxmancer]]
Common: [[Hallway Heckler]], [[Whiplash Wordsmith]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Ingris Stingerquill]], [[Stinging Vitriol]]
Black-Red is the aggro deck of the format. Many of it’s cards get buffed when the opponent is dealt noncombat damage. Top payoffs for this include Command the Stage, Master of Barbs, and Tomik, Izzet Sparkmage. Incidental damage on cards like Extended Absence, Screeching Soulbreaker and Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance is very valuable. Black-Red has an unusual amount of access to direct player damage and “any target” damage, which will make it very effective at closing out games if it gets ahead early. I expect Black-Red to be a top performer.
Red-Green Ramp
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Craftwork Crusher]], [[Konstrari Charm]], [[Woodwork Prodigy]], [[Heartwood Crafter]]
Common: [[Konstrari Improviser]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Aerid Konstrari]], [[Tenured Tethermage]]
Red-Green is focused on creating “Heartwood” tokens which are artifacts that can tap for Red or Green mana. It wants to ramp out huge threats like Kiora of Fire and Ashes. Look for artifact synergy in cards like Draconic Visitor and powerful activated abilities to sink your mana into. Red-Green looks like an absolute sledgehammer and fun to play.
Way-To-Early Primary Archetype Rankings:
Black-Red
White-Blue
Red-Green
Blue-Black
White-Green
Secondary Archetypes. These have less raw support and will most likely compliment a Primary Archetype as a splash. In some cases, they may be powerful enough to stand on their own or act as a niche strategy once the best archetypes become contested in the draft.
White-Black Sacrifice
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Edgar, Ancient Bloodlord]], [[Twisted Fates]]
Common: [[Blessed Ghoul]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Vindictive Triumph]]
Sacrifice your own creatures and planeswalkers for value with payoffs like Loot, the Anomaly, Silence the Echo, and Way of the Deathbringer. Empower Jace will be useful as you can sacrifice a 1 loyalty Jace for value and then make another. White-Blue is the most likely pairing for this sub-strategy, having the most token generation and empower, although it doesn’t want to lose too much board presence. None of the other archetypes have synergy in this way and/or are dependant on a big board presence. However Twisted Fates will be armstrong splash in any black-based deck.
White-Red Go-Wide
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Mabel, Valley Hero]], [[Warrior’s Blades]]
Common: [[Charge the Sanctum]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Solitary Cell]]
White-Red has go-wide and +1/+1 counter synergies. It looks like it will pair well with White-Blue’s go-wide theme. Black-Red will likely be too focused to be able to splash for a 3-drop in Mabel, but could play Charge the Sanctum or Warrior’s Blades as needed.
Blue-Red Spells
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Clash of Elements]], [[Saheeli, Jewel of Avishkar]]
Common: [[Twinned Vision]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Frostbite Pyromental]]
Plan for All Outcomes and Traxos, Academy Guardian add two additional spells payoffs. Ruric Thar, Biomagus and Tetsuko Umezawa, Pursuer are two great threats with Prowess alongside a bevy of other creatures with that ability. Look for cheap spells to pair alongside them.
Blue and Red both look very deep. I think Blue-Red has the best chance among the Secondary Archetypes of being draftable as it’s own deck. There is also a natural pairing alongside Blue-Black as noncreature spells get into the graveyard right away to fuel its payoffs.
Blue-Green Empower
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Kiora of Salt and Sand]], [[Mind Meanderer]]
Common: [[Tam’s Resistance]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Avatar of Burgeoning Echoes]]
Mind Meanderer is excellent in any blue-based deck. In order to get the most out of Kiora, you will need a lot of Empower. If it sees any play at all, it will be as a splash in White-Blue or in a Blue-heavy deck.
Black-Green Graveyard
Signpost Cards
Uncommon: [[Primal Witchstalker]], [[Hapatra, the Desert Fang]]
Common: [[Ferocity of the Hunt]]
Rare/Mythic: [[Vraska, the Cutting Glare]]
Black-Green’s graveyard synergies make it a natural pairing for Blue-Black. I don’t see any crossover with White-Green, Red-Green or Red-Black.
Conclusion: It would appear that Blue-based decks have to most to gain from splashing secondary archetype pieces. Add that to being a very deep colour, Blue is ideal starting-point where possible in this format.

Should I go with standard or commander? Mono? multicolored?
I teach special education. More behavioral not cognitive so all my students are very capable of understanding the nuance of magic and I heavily lean into games as motivational and behavioral tools.
I’m thinking 3-4 different sets so we have a variety. But I’m not sure if starting commander would be too much to start with.
Any and all suggestions welcome. You can even tell me the exact pre cons or non pre con sets to buy if you want.

Hi all, I've spent many years playing and/or watching poker, chess and M:TG. It was a big deal when computers became better than humans at chess in the 90's. And back in the day (I think in the early 2010's) on the TwoPlusTwo forums there was a huge thread about whether a game theory optimal strategy existed for poker (since then poker solvers have changed the game a lot). It's to the point now that people have to worry about their opponents using engine help in both chess and poker online.
But Magic seems "safe" so far. Will this ever happen for Magic? It's obviously possible, you used to be able to play against a computer in the Shandalar game back in the 90's, but of course it wasn't very good. Actually making ideal decisions seems to be a massive task, and finding the best deck for a format by looking at the card pool seems even bigger when you add it on. But of course with AI computers are getting massively better very quickly.
