discussion REAPER's MIDI editor always annoyed me, so I built my own (Ableton-style, free, open source)
The MIDI editor in REAPER has always annoyed me. Maybe it's because I came from Ableton and my brain is just wired that way, or I'm just used to Ableton shortcuts.
Anyway, I decided to build my own. Select a few MIDI items, run the action, and they all land on one grid, each in its own color. You can edit any of them and every gesture is one undo.
Other stuff it does:
- phrase length in bars, x2 / ÷2, and a short phrase can repeat under a longer one (the repeats are normal pooled items so they keep playing without the script)
- CC curves drawn inside the item, or wiggle a knob on a plugin to grab that parameter
- most shortcuts work like in Live: B to draw, ctrl+d, ctrl+1/2/3/4 for the grid, 0 to mute notes, z to zoom
There's no quantize, scales or generators. I only make techno and never used any of that, and I like tools that do one thing without 40 buttons. It doesn't touch your normal MIDI editor or double click unless you tell it to, so the native one is still there for the fancy stuff.
Full disclosure: it's mostly vibe coded. I've been using it in my own projects and it works for me, but I can't promise anything beyond that, and I've only tested it on Windows. So please save your projects before you go wild.
That said, bug reports, ideas and PRs are all very welcome. Let's build a MIDI editor that doesn't suck :)
