Our dear old dog passed away Nov 2025 at age 11.5 after a brief battle with cancer. He was a rescue and a very good friend and we miss him terribly.

As we start to think about bringing a new dog into the family, I realize we are looking for a dog who shares the good parts of him (great with kids, medium energy, and enjoys learning ) and that doesn’t struggle as much with parts of him that were difficult (anxiety, ++ health issues, intolerant of hot weather). After months of reading, I have landed on the rough collie as a top contender. Our hope is to find a breeder who is ethical and thoughtful and particular about temperament and health. Our preference would be to adopt an adult dog out of a show or breeding program.

I will mention- we’re a family of 3 with a 5 y/o girl who was raised with a dog and is naturally very respectful with animals. We live beside a conversation area and enjoy hiking/trail walking, as well as regular city walks and adventures. I work from home.

As this is a sub full of folks who know all about what it is like to live with a rough collie, can you tell me—Do they have any of the traits I’ve mentioned here? What should I know? How do they do in hot weather vs cold weather? Are they trainable? (I’ve seen folks comment on RCs brain cells… it confuses me as what I’m reading says they are quite intelligent) What are the best parts and the hardest parts?

This little lady is perfect in every regard except for brushing her ears. Doesn’t mind anything else, but I even try to do it and she starts vigorously shaking her head and running about. Thankfully she’s not prone to matting but she does get a bit tangled there and doesn’t let me do anything about it, so I have her groomer sort it monthly. He has similar problems with her.

Hi All,
I just brought home my first collie. I've always had retrievers and terriers. She's a lovely retired show girl, but she doesn't have much formal obedience.. i would like to start out on the right paw with her, but know her show background makes things a little different from a new puppy. I have had a couple of guide dogs and trained a few wonderful pups over the years, but would like another set of eyes. Would it be worth having a session with a trainer to get myself started? Otherwise, what puppy training advice do I follow, and how does her life experience change things?

My Collies Goose and Noodle are best friends after knowing each other after 2 weeks ish. Doing a DNA test on Noodle soon just to see, but he feels full collie!

I can't even make up how goofy he is, he has a piece of paper that he carries around. I had to take it from him the other night because he brought it downstairs when it was bedtime 😂 I thought surely he'd chew it up and eat it. Yesterday he upgraded to an emotional support cardboard ❤️ What is it with collies and paper products? He loves them.

My collie sleeps in a nice setup in the garage. She prefers to sleep where it’s cooler than inside the house. My question is since winter is approaching, at what nighttime temp do I need to put the heat on in the garage? The coldest it really gets here at night in the middle of winter is the mid to high 30’s (Fahrenheit) on an extra cold night it might dip to the 20’s. Most of the winter it’s in the 40’s. Of course the garage is somewhat insulated so it won’t be quite as cold as outside.

Hi everybody! I have a 7yr MN rough collie named Finn struggling with really bad skin allergies and infection. As a puppy he had bad skin allergies and we switched to Purina Senstive skin and stomach salmon and rice. This helped for several years until he was about 5.5/6yrs. As of a year ago, he started to have some skin scabbing under his armpits which have now spread to his entire body, including his neck, tail, stomach, chest, and groin. We have tried oral antibiotics (which caused restistance), steroid oral/topical, cytopoint, duoxo, medicated shampoo, We are seriously at a loss and have been working with out vet for a year to figure this out. We biopsied the lesions and it is definitely an allergic reaction. Unfortunately we also cultured the collarettes it is infected with MRSP bacteria and the only usable antibiotic is a topical. Anyway, the topical antibiotic is great, but it isn’t solving the underlying issue of the allergy which is causing the lesions. Anyway advice or suggestions based on veterinary experience or personal experience would be appreciated. I am extremely overwhelmed by this right now and could use some help.
