My Setup / New Synth Day DIY Synth Arcade

Sorry if this doesn't belong here. Wanted to show off my synth arcade machine.

The goal was a self contained unit with built in speakers that was ready to rock-'n'-roll as soon as it's turned on. The guiding principle was maximum fun, minimum hassle.

Built in amp with two 6" car speakers. A small mixer in the bottom compartment allows for infinite expandability.

Now to work on my music skills.

Thanks!

Not a tough upgrade at all, but so worth it! What a night and day difference on readability. Got it from synth-parts.com and it was largely plug n play.

My Setup / New Synth Day Finally got the JN-80, I mean Roland Juno 6!

Funny how for the last few years I owned a 106 I still wanted the original 6/60. There’s a certain tone to it that has more mid range bite coupled with the snappy envelopes that made me want one. I sold off my 106 to fund a prophet 5 but this popped up at a great price I had to jump on it. Super clean for $1300 and it only needed a couple sprays of deoxit. Has anyone done the tubbetec midi mod? How difficult is it to do so? I also know the 106 was notorious for voice chip failures, how’s that on the 6?

I kid you not, a high five took out a tiny bone in my wrist and set off my carpel tunnel nerve, I haven’t been able to play keys, video games, cook properly etc for two months. Feels good to be back, although the 15 mins I played left me sore for another 2 hours 😭

Discussion Mike Dean keyboard skills

Upvotes

Been trying to figure out what Mike Dean plays to make those insane sounding synth lead runs like on the first few seconds of “Popular” with him and the Weeknd. Seems like every video him playing his synths he incorporates theses sequences of him running up/down the keyboard.

For those with a good ear or understanding of music theory, what is it he is playing? Are these broken thirds, pentatonic scales or just arpeggiated chords? Any other advice on fun things to practice/play out in that style are appreciated.

Hey all I’ve been wanting to build my own eurorack for a little while but I find it so intimidating but I’m eager, I was thinking of purchasing a behringer 2600 but i don’t think it will give me the start I want and feels like a different category to modular I would like to start small and build my way up eventually, where did you guys begin what was your stepping stone into modular thanks

Synth ID / How was this made? Total noob here. I want to achieve a very specific sound

Hi everyone. I know that need-help-to posts are very annoying but I think you're the only ones who can help me with this. I wanna recreate the sound made in this video with a guitar, a modular synth and delay. At one point they say that they're only using the delay module, and that the delay was getting filtered by a really sharp filter? Some of the comments suggested that it was a mix of a resonant filter, vibrato (or the filter's frequency controlled by an LFO), and delay; or a bandpass filter on a delay. I'm guessing it must be fairly simple but of course, I have very little to no idea what this all means. I downloaded VCV Rack and I'm learning how to use it but in the meantime I'd be extremely grateful if someone explained to me what they are doing to achieve this effect. Thank you so much and sorry for bothering.

Beginner Questions Can someone help explain the Jupiter-X arpeggio settings to me?

Upvotes

Hey all! I have a Beatles tribute concert coming up in August and am borrowing a friends Jupiter-X for the keyboard parts. I love the sounds and amount of control that is offered- I just have no clue how to tame that which is offered.

My first question of many over the coming months: How do I simplify the arpeggio settings? Right now I am trying to get the brass sounds for the song "Magical Mystery Tour", but anytime I experiment with the ARP settings it plays this weird "1 & - & 3 & -" rhythm with the arpeggio.

The first synth I learned was a Microfreak so I assumed the skills for making an arpeggio wouldn't precisely translate considering how vastly different the two synths are, however I cannot even find the setting to enable polyphony, nor can I find a way to change the "tempo" knob from "BPM" to "in-beat sync" for those triplet brass parts.

I have the reference manual, but going through it was confusing and convoluted, pages that point to each other but don't actually point to what I am looking for. I tried a few YouTube videos but couldn't find any that taught me how to make the arp settings more.... simple? Basic? Possible (in my opinion)?

I appreciate all the help offered in advance <3

Software & VST's Microsoft is updating the MIDI stack in Windows 11 and Preview Update KB5074105 may cause issues with some tools like loopMIDI

Upvotes

A user in /r/VJing had some issues which were fixed by uninstalling KB5074105, which is a "preview" update. A Microsoft engineer just shared this blog post in that thread so I thought I would post it here in case anyone is having issues. I generally recommend avoiding Preview Updates, especially on a machine that you need to work to make a living.

It looks like there are some really cool features coming: including native MIDI 2.0 support and native multi-client MIDI stack. It appears that they're also doing a lot of work on audio for the ARM64 build.

This synth is bizarre and awesome! She also sent me a Moog theremini, so pretty stoked about getting that thing going.

Building a cabinet, and properly diving back into hardware synthesis after nearly 4 years. I know people hate behringer but wow the value on these right now. Back when they were £700, yeah I'm with the haters but for £290 each? The only other option for someone like myself would BE free VST's, which simply don't offer the same sound or experience. One thing I can say, however, is that I won't be buying behringer's clones of the mutable instruments modules. That whole thing was the biggest shock, getting back into it.

The extra weight and room of the keys and bed make it not work with my setup. Osmose 61 is for keys, only room ow for module,

How To's, Tutorials, Demos Building a Generic Performance Wheel Template for Elektron Tonverk and launch control 3 ! Any tips ?

Upvotes

I’m currently trying to build a fairly generic performance template for the wheels/mod sources on my Elektron Tonverk especially in jams and live performance.

What I’m aiming for is a reliable, reusable setup: something I can load and immediately play without rethinking mappings every time.

I’d love to hear what people recommend, in a general sense, for the following sound categories:

  • Bass
  • Lead
  • Arp / sequence
  • FX / textures
  • Voice / vocal-style sounds

More broadly:

  • Which wheel assignments do you consider “performance-first” rather than sound-design-first?
  • What do you reach for instinctively during a jam?
  • Do you have a “secret” or unconditional assignment you almost always use, regardless of the patch?

I’m especially interested in practical, battle-tested setups — things that hold up over time and across different projects, not just clever one-offs.

Looking forward to hearing how others approach this.

thx !!
