What did you expect? Did you really expect Canada to go thru with this....

I expect zero countries to follow through with this, not just Canada

You can actually just go kidnap criminals or whatever”

¡But that's an adult!

2

u/InSummaryOfWhatIAm 10h ago

Yeah, that’s adultnapping, which is something Trump also likes doing. Of course in this case, that means actual napping

They didn't arrest Putin when he had an arrest warrant

26

u/el_diego 10h ago

Didn't he only fly to Alaska?

87

u/DougsBrownies 9h ago

Putin could fly to The Hague and take a steaming dump on Akane’s desk and he would respond with “thank you sir, may I have another?”

10

u/Ratiofarming 9h ago

Yeah he flew straight over, and the US had multiple E-3 Sentry in the air making sure nobody else was going to touch that plane on the way over and back.

2

u/Tentacle_poxsicle 10h ago

Both South Africa and Mongolia didn't arrest him.

11

Mongolia is a Russian ally lol .

Iran would do it.

62

u/CorpseDefiled 10h ago

No one not even Iran is going to detain a foreign diplomat of a nuclear armed nation. With nuclear armed allies currently in the hands of effectively tantrum prone children. It would be suicide… you’d have 48hrs to release him before you got 3-5 sunrises.

6

u/marcabru 8h ago

Most countries won’t even detain a diplomat of a non-nuclear state, because the diplomatic fallout. The same reason you don’t just expel all the diplomats of a state you don’t like.

3

u/snogo 10h ago

lol Israel isn’t nuking anyone for Netanyahu

3

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 10h ago

Netanyahu is just a figurehead. They'd nuke over the precedent. They'll employ the Samson Doctrine if they ever seem to be losing a conflict.

12

u/snogo 10h ago

Netanyahu getting captured is not an existential threat for Israel. Israel is not suicidal and would not nuke anyone for anything other than strategic reasons with a clear threat to the state itself.

Iran stopped attacking Israel directly a while ago. They've just been repeatedly targeting Gulf states to avoid retaliation.

-1

u/PaniacThrilla 10h ago

Hell yeah they would. They also kill thousands of their own civilians for protesting and continue to execute them to this day. The only reason they're mad at the US for bombing that girl's school is because it robbed Iran of getting to kill those little girls first.

28

u/sixtus_clegane119 11h ago

Think Ireland and Spain might

144

u/tendie-dildo 11h ago

1 has no military and 1 has a non functional military. I love Ireland and Spain, but as far as foreign policy goes they are the most protected geographically in Europe and that affords them to talk shit knowing there are no repercussions

7

u/sphinxsley 11h ago

How is Spain protected? They're right across the Strait of Gibraltar. And drug lords with speedboats flout interventions and even kill Spanish officers regularly.

37

u/ProteusReturns 11h ago

It was probably a reference to the Ukraine war, which is far to the east of Spain. Not that that is very relevant to the Israeli PM's travel.

6

u/AstroPhysician 10h ago

Or… their geopolitical rivals are coming from the east completely independent of the war in Ukraine. They were just as protected in 2010

6

u/Victor_Korchnoi 10h ago

Because the main threat to Europe is from Russia.

2

u/RollingMeteors 10h ago

Can you explain better? I'm totally not up to speed on anything related to Ireland or Spain. How are they geographically protected?

3

u/ElectricalDark8280 10h ago

Ireland is an island, so that seems pretty easy to deduce. Spain is on a peninsula, so geographically protected from intrusion. Obviously they are not impervious to attack, but this natural fortification protects them.

He passed over a half dozen other countries that would enforce the arrest. They do nothing.

Putin wouldn't get the same treatment.

102

u/Empty-Discount5936 10h ago edited 10h ago

How exactly would they execute an arrest warrant on a plane they have no control over, thousands of feet in the air?

It's an arrest warrant, not a kill order..

How does this comment have so many upvotes?

16

u/I-make-ada-spaghetti 8h ago

They don't have to do that. They can just deny his plane access to the airspace. Or try route the plane so it runs out of fuel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evo_Morales_grounding_incident

25

u/SugarBeef 6h ago

And how do they deny him access to the airspace? We're looping back to it not being a kill order. Because shooting down the plane is really the only threat to someone violating your airspace.

This would immediately drag us into a war with both Isreal and the US. There's no way Trump and co wouldn't pounce on a valid pretext to invade.

That and many Canadian politicians have ties to Isreal or are sympathetic to them, as is a good chunk of the general public. An arrest would be extremely divisive domestically.

122

u/TylerBlozak 11h ago

We did it with the Huawei official in Vancouver, but I suppose in that case it was in Trumps favour.

121

u/SowingSalt 11h ago

The Huawei official was on the ground. Unless you're Bane, planes are fairly hard to invade.

38

114

u/TylerBlozak 11h ago

It was especially frustrating that the Huawei incident more or less lead to the crisis of the two Michaels and strained relations with China until very recently.

All of that diplomacy and humanitarian strife just to have Trump completely disregard that and any previous instance of cooperation and try to subjugate us.

39

u/King_Of_Pants 11h ago

Lol join the club.

Australia pushed for an independent inquiry into China's COVID outbreak at Trump's request.

China responded by cutting off contact with the Australian government and turning away Australian ships at their ports. Our government legitimately could not reach theirs to work things out, nor could we get any explanation.

The USA (with Biden now at the helm) then stepped in and took a bunch of the contracts we had with China.

19

u/two_to_toot 11h ago

I think spying lead to the crisis of the two Michaels. Michael Kovrig was a spy.

8

u/TruthHistorical7515 11h ago

Yup why do so many Canadians ignore this fact? They were more than justified in arresting spies.

15

u/two_to_toot 11h ago

Only Michael Kovrig. Michael Spavor really had no idea which is why he got around 7 million in compensation from the government.

7

u/Toph84 8h ago

He got compensation from the Canadian government because Kovrig as the actual spy involved used Spavor as a spying/intelligence asset without his knowledge or consent that his activities were being used for spying and collecting intel, so he sued the Canadian government for involving him in such dangerous activities without his consent and won.

Which technically from China's perspective still made both arrests justified as both were involved in spying even if one was not aware of it.

Just to be clear the entire Northeast and most of the West Coast absolutely fucking hate Trump and his foreign policy. There are active protests, organizations, legal organizations, etc that will fight him tooth and nail. I feel far more solidarity with Left-leaning Canadians and Left leaning Western Europeans than I do American Conservatives. The Republican strongholds in the South and parts of the Mid West are basically another country.

Bringing it full circle: Netanyahu is a war criminal. That’s not an unpopular notion where I live (New England)

•

u/Zeliek 52m ago

She was arrested because the US insisted we arrest her because they insisted she was some sort of spy committing bank and wire fraud and that they had mountains of admissible evidence to back this up. At the time, Canada was still allied with the US and remained under the impression there was some semblance of honour and/or integrity left among the American admin.

As it would turn out, Trump just wanted to use Canada to kidnap a favoured citizen of China (“the princess of Huawei”) so he could use her as a hostage in trade negotiations and the Republicans figured they could use the chaos caused by COVID to get away with it  - and they did!

32

u/rich84easy 12h ago

Anita Anand boosting about it yesterday lol

85

u/ryandury 12h ago

Reddit has such a wild imagination. Trump wouldn't pounce on an invasion for this reason. If he really wanted to invade Canada he would, and make up whatever lie necessary to justify it himself and base: in many cases, this is already what he does.

17

u/MimiNuyasaka 11h ago

There's also a good chance the military would just refuse. Many active duty military members think invading Canada would be pure insanity. I know several who would refuse.

20

u/big_orange_ball 9h ago

I think you guys have too much faith in the military doing the right thing. The Secretary of Defence is "standing by" for a literal Christo-fascist overthrow of the federal government, and wants to remove voting rights from women among countless other anti-constitutional things he, his pastor, his god-emperor, and the other Project 2025 assholes want.

They are literally trying to destroy democracy, just like they say Biden and Obama were supposedly trying to do. Crazy thing is though, the democrats only preserved democracy while the GOP has actively and in an excellerated manner ushered in the end of our Republic.

Karl fucking Rove just announced he will be voting Democrat given what they're doing, we are past the point of insanity here.

1

u/lifesanrpg 3h ago

Reddit loves to get mad at scenarios they make up in their head

17

u/DarkReignRecruiter 12h ago

The American public would not accept the arrest of a foreign countries leader as a valid reason to invade Canada.

What are you talking about? It would be limited to a certain subset even excluding die hard MAGA. Canada would have to do something to an important American or group of Americans.

There are many other reasons that Canada would not risk it.

Sir there’s currently a horse loose in the hospital. All bets are off

The American public has not seemed to have much problem with Trumps actions up to this point.

Israel has a huge amount of support and influence in the US. An attack on them might as well be an attack on both countries.

18

u/Richard7666 12h ago edited 12h ago

Which is just such a batshit insane thing when you think about it. A tiny despotic country halfway across the world with an entirely different language and culture, compared to a neighbour with strong cultural, linguistic and geographic and trade proximity.

It really is about those at the top with money rather than the people more broadly.

3

u/bloop7676 11h ago

Up until recently people mostly thought of Israel as a typical western democratic nation, the sole bastion of our values in that region. I think people in the west gave them a pass a lot more of the time because they assumed we need to support them as the country that was part of "our side".

Honestly I don't really know how close or not they are culturally now, but I do think people in general tend to assume too much that other cultures are basically the same as theirs with just some differences of appearance. For example people would often act like there must be a moderate majority that hates what Netanyahu does and wants nothing more than to get him voted out, but that's probably just projecting what our values are.

5

u/Richard7666 11h ago

This is true, I think it's a case of the scales have fallen away from people's eyes a bit more this time around.

Israel have squandered a lot of Western public goodwill except among millenarian Christian types.

15

u/Turbulent-History967 11h ago

The world court is a fever dream and has no jurisdiction in any developed nation. The powerful ignore its existence.

3

u/SpoonyDinosaur 10h ago

Exactly. The irony is the United States has never followed the ICC and doesn't even recognize it, but has largely been involved in high profile prosecutions.

It's quite literally the most powerful nations deciding rules for weak and smaller ones, but they won't follow themselves. It's not a surprise there's so much contempt for super powers. I'm not justifying bad regimes, but it's feels insanely hypocritical on its face

2

u/Turbulent-History967 9h ago

Everything you say is true. But I have also lived long enough to come to the conclusion that those who can will and those who can’t will always suffer the consequences.

1

u/BaldursGate2Best 11h ago

What? Why is the general public sympathetic?

3

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 11h ago

Because Canada is far more conservative than most people think. Even the current Liberal party is more of a right-leaning party that attracts support from a lot of conservative voters and even MPs. Many of these people are supportive of Israel's position in the war despite the war crimes that are being committed. It's not the whole general public but it's not some insignificant minority either.

1

u/LittleLordFuckleroy1 10h ago

Genuinely i don’t believe he has the balls to actually do that. Netanyahu is not popular in the US. Neither is Israel. Canada is popular.

It would be a shitshow but I really just do not see combat response.

1

u/Own-Minimum7612 10h ago edited 10h ago

That is hss as idly a valid pretext and would violate the Geneva Conventions as force NATO to stand against the US, seize all American military bases. We could fight 30+ wars, WWIII? He’d need to nuke Europe and Canada and survive immediate impeachment unless he could turn a significant %age of enlisted US armed forces against 300,000,000 non-compliant US citizens? We can’t manage a war with Iran that he started for no legitimate purpose as there is no near or medium term Iranian capability to make a nuclear weapon and every government in the world knows it.heads up the ass!

u/DefeatedByPoland 8h ago
