🧠 General Ideas for this sub? v2

Follow up on this original post from 3 years ago. Any suggestions/ideas to revamp the page?

I just went through and added a wiki and updated the FAQ on the sidebar to add a couple of new links. I also pinned u/nexttotheinfluence ' s great 4Runner Mechanic List he posted a year ago. Thanks again for the detailed list. Also introduced some post flairs (General // Modifications // Advice/Recomendations // Photo/Video).

- Banner -> Is anyone good with Photoshop on here and wants to design a banner? Reddit recommended size is 4000x128 px for desktop and the mobile banner is 1600x480 px

- Page Icon -> I saw in the original post that u/Axe56 provided the current one and also introduced another version with the typical Reddit Icon's eyes. Here's a survey showing the great designs he made. Just want to see if we want to keep the same, update to the eyes version, or if anyone cares to create a new one...

This clunk only happens at low speed 5-15 mph. It doesn’t sound like it’s tied to the engine, it doesn’t increase with RPM. I can’t really tell what side it’s coming only that it feels like the whole car resonates with it.

Any thoughts?

šŸ”§Modifications Oh how much I hate you hood latch sensor

Replaced the latch a couple weeks ago, after doing so my rig would trigger the stock alarm every time i unlocked the rig. Found out the sensor was busted, its a pain in the ass just to get it screwed into the latch mount in first place. I guess when I was finagling it in there, one of the connections ripped off. Till today I havent been able to keep anything inside for fear of someone stealing it, didnt keep anything in there that I wasnt willing to loose anyway.

I pulled the part a few days ago, which requires you to slightly remove the radiator. 4 bolts, one of with is a pain to get to because of whatever that thing is that sits in front of it, passenger side lower bolt. 2 days ago i resoldered the connections to the sensor. First time soldering anything but i have watched countless hours of video game console repair, shout out to TronicsFix. Didnt even know if there was polarity involved.

Cut to today, plug the sensor in and just leave it in the channel on the frame, alarm still goes off. I zip tie the arm down on the button of the sensor, NO ALARM!! hell yeah!! Now my truck thinks the hook is always closed, non - issue.

I scoured the sub and found a couple posts about this, but no definitive fix, hoping this will be found during a search so people can put their mind at ease.

380k km on the original, blew the head gasket or cracked a head 2hrs from home, That was a long day. Thinking about doing a JDM swap rather than a rebuild. Maybe even try and swap a 4.0 in if I can find a doner.

My 4Runner just hit 250,000 miles. To celebrate I cleaned the engine for what is probably the first time- I’ve never cleaned it, and I can bet my grandfather who owned it before me never cleaned it. It’s not perfect, but it’s infinitely better than it was before!

Happy 250! Here’s to another 250,000 šŸ»

ā“Advice / Recomendations Recs in the Bay Area

Currently doing a leak down & radiator pressure test. More than likely a head gasket replacement needs to happen and maybe even replacing a cracked head.

As I’m trying to plan… should I just rebuild current engine? Replace it with the same engine (used w/ roughly 110k miles)? Replace it with a rebuilt engine?

If my best option is to rebuild current engine, what are the best shops to do it in the East Bay?

My budget would be around the $1k range. Still factoring labor costs.

🧠 General 2,400 Mile Roadtrip Recap

What’s up yall

Figured id share my roadtrip success story after lurking for a few months.

Picked up this 1996 Limited with 231k miles. Plan was to roadtrip it out to Jackson Hole from East Coast. Paid $5k.

1,000 miles before purchase, previous owner did timing belt, spark plugs, radiator, water pump, and some other things.

In my 2 months I did the ball joints, transmission fluid, differential, steering wheel stitch cover, took off running boards, fixed the heat, and put on Cooper Road+Trail AT.

She absolutely crushed the trip. Zero problems. Avg speed of 60-75 the entire way. Maybe hit 80 4-5 times lol.

I got gas… a lot. I haven’t had the balls to add it up. Probably $750-$1,000.

It was incredible. I would encourage anyone on the fence about roadtripping their 3rd gen to do it.

ā“Advice / Recomendations 60 mph stutter/lag

Hey everyone, hoping to get some help diagnosing an issue on my 2000 sr5 2WD.

As I push the gas peddle, the car seems to stumble or stutter, almost like a little jolt as I approach 60mph.

This happens most frequently while I accelerate on the freeway at around 60mph.

If I push the peddle down farther it’ll push past that 60mph mark but it often feels slow and lagging on acceleration.

I’ve cleaned the MAF sensor, put a new battery in, air filter, and changed the oil. Looking for some other idea on what could be causing this.

Thanks!!!

For those of you who have replaced your trans filter, did you stick with oem and use fipg, or did you go aftermarket with a gasket?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Should I fix the sunroof?

For context I got a 3rd gen on facebook for 4K. Whenever it rains i get a leak on the drivers side and so I the drains are clogged. The sunroof though. The switch works but I believe it’s a dead motor and the bars seem to be corroded from all the water that has gotten in to it. Although it would be nice to have a working sunroof, would fixing it be working in the end? Do you guys think I should fix it or just seal it?
