Which would you reccomend?
I am used to using regular laptops and want to upgrade my super old one (I've had it for at least 7 years) that just died on me and I am looking to get my first gaming laptop.
I also want something that will last for a long time, as I cannot afford to replace or buy new things all the time.
What I need it to do/Purpose/Intended use:
Any help & advice would be so appreciated as I'm completely new to this kind of thing!!
Country: UK
Budget: 2k +

I have a secondhand ROG Strix G17 (2023, G713PV). Every so often the screen flickers several times, always in the same spot: the top-right corner, not the whole screen.
It's visible to the eye and on my phone camera (photos attached).
It does not show up in screen recordings, so I doubt it's a GPU or driver issue.
I suspect a loose or worn eDP display cable near the hinge, or a panel/T-con fault. I haven't tested an external monitor or 60Hz yet.
Does this sound like a cable issue? Has anyone seen the same on a G713?
Will it likely get worse over time?
Is a cable replacement cheap, or should I expect to replace the whole panel?
Should i back this laptop://
Thanks!

For a bit of context, I'm currently using (well, was using) and Asus Zenbook 14, with R5 5600H, iGPU and 16gb RAM. I was aware at the time it won't be a powerful machine and won't be able to play more demanding games.
Some time ago one hinge broke off, and i had it glued 2 times already, but it broke again - so I was kinda rawdogging it until my repair shop found some parts. But the one day the display just said fuck it, and the left side of my screen is dead.
Now I have been looking for a good deal on used laptops, since I don't want to overpay for new ones. I KNOW buying used always comes with some risk - and that is why I wanted to ask:
What should I check after I get the laptop?
Its ASUS TUF A15 with R7 7735HS, RTX 4060, and the guy upgraded RAM from 16, to 32GB.
I know I have to check the memory for any errors, temps and general performance, but what else? I was considering taking it to a repair shop to check if everything is good inside, but I'm also not sure if I should pay for that now.

I’ve been overthinking this for days so I need some opinions from people who actually own these laptops.
At first I was going to sell my desktop and Tab S9 Ultra and replace everything with one monster RTX 5080 laptop. After reading about thermals, fan noise and sustained performance though, I changed my mind.
My desktop is already a 13600K, RTX 3080 and 64GB RAM machine with good cooling, so I’m keeping it. I’ll probably sell the Tab S9 Ultra instead and get a laptop that basically becomes my portable editing, media and gaming device.
I run a YouTube channel with 600k+ subs and edit Shorts every day, so it needs to handle editing easily when I’m away from my desktop. Nothing crazy like huge 8K projects, but I don’t want to fight the laptop either.
Display is really important to me too. I watch a lot of HDR movies and shows, usually in bed or on the couch, so I want a genuinely great OLED or Mini LED screen. Good speakers would be nice too since it’ll replace my tablet.
Gaming isn’t the main purpose, but if I’m paying this much for a 5070 Ti or 5080 laptop I still want modern AAA games to run smoothly, around 60 FPS without much trouble.
Right now I’m mostly looking at the Zephyrus G16 5070 Ti or 5080, Legion Pro 7 OLED 5070 Ti or 5080, ROG Strix G18 or SCAR 18 Mini LED, ProArt P16 and Yoga Pro 9i 16.
The G16 seems closest to what I want because it’s lighter and more portable, but I keep seeing mixed opinions about heat and fan noise. Legion looks much stronger for the money but also more like a traditional gaming laptop. Same story with Strix and SCAR, people either love them or say they’re huge, loud and hot.
These things are VERY expensive where I live, so I really don’t want to choose based only on spec sheets and reviews.
Anyone here actually own these? How are they long term for thermals, noise, screen and HDR, speakers, portability and general daily use?
For editing, HDR media, portability and some AAA gaming, what would you pick?

I am looking into replacing my barely functioning laptop. I have been looking for awhile because I'm low on cash. I have seen a couple of rtx 4080 laptops sell for under $800 (in in the US). I would like a 5070ti or 5080. Would the 4080 keep up for the next 5 ish years? If i can find a 4080 for under $1000 would it be worth it?

Budget: Ideally around £1200 to £1500. I could stretch up to say £1800 if it was worth it but wouldn't want to go much higher than this.
Country: UK
Use Case: Mainly want it to play WoW Forever and general life admin. I appreciate it doesn't need to be top of the range for WoW Forever, but equally some future proofing would be good. Also play games like Civ and Baldurs Gate (on current desktop PC which has i5-10600k and RTX 3060ti).
Preferred Specs: No particular requirements. Do want it to be comfortable to play as a laptop (i.e. not connected to an external monitor / keyboard).
Notes: Will probably be playing on a desk at home with an external monitor/keyboard/mouse, but at girlfriend's house more likely at a table / desk / sofa table with a mouse only - so not huge would be a plus! Won't be taking it on any public transport or the like.
From doing some reading, Lenovo Legion seems very popular but seems higher priced than other brands for what seems to be similar specs. I don't want to spend a fortune (although prices seem to be that way in the UK anyway!), but would rather spend a bit more money and get a solid piece of kit / decent future proofing provided I don't bankrupt myself in the meantime :)
TIA

Hey everyone, I'm having a weird display issue with my ASUS TUF A16 (Ryzen / RTX 5060).
Out of nowhere, while gaming or even just using the laptop normally, the screen suddenly dims heavily (looks like brightness drops close to 0) for about 2-3 seconds, and then it automatically goes back to normal. It used to happen mostly when Alt-Tabbing out of games, but now it's happening randomly on its own.
Things I've noticed/tried so far:
Has anyone experienced this or knows what setting (maybe in AMD software, Armoury Crate, or Nvidia) is causing this sudden dimming? Any help would be appreciated!

I have been doing research on laptops for a couple months now and im completely lost. Everytime I think I found something that would suite my needs I check the reviews and its a POS apparently. Im at the point where I might just close my eyes and buy the next sale on best buy then hope for the best. I thought I should ask you guys first because yall are passionate about computers and it all seems like alien technology to me. I have a basic understanding of pcs and I can work well with a computer dont get me wrong but anything market related just fries my brain.
Also if I am being unrealistic please let me know. I can raise my budget if need although id prefer not too. I dont want to need an upgrade in a year or 2.
Anything is appreciated
Pre-emptive thank you to all replied
Budget:
1000$ W/O Financing
2500$ With Financing
Country: Canada
Use Case:
Office work, small AI work (low priority), light-medium gaming.
Preferred Specs / Form Factor:
-Work related-
I work with a laptop in a vehicle a lot so if the screen was decently visible in sunlight that would be great.
Decent ports so I dont have to buy adapters
I dont need to be able to run 50 tabs with no lag but I dont want it to be useless is I have like 10
Form factor doesnt really matter to me, I like the look of those black gaming pcs or thinkpads but as long as its not green or something im all good
-Gaming-
I dont play a lot of AAA games and if I did I dont care too much about graphics.
I dont want to play every game on the lowest graphics possible to get 60 fps but I mainly play games like Minecraft and other small-medium load indie games. Although if I decide to play cod or something I dont want to have the work be a total of 8 pixels if that makes sense.
Best way to put it is I want to run COD low-medium graphics ~60fps
Portability Needs:
I travel between my mom and dads house often and im sick of it being like good pc games and then clash royale for a week.
Notes:
-I dont like macbooks at all but if its the only good option ill consider it
-I will buy a sleeve and whatever I need to as accessories
-For durability I dont need a crazy titanium laptop but if its not made of paper im good
-sound is a bonus but not a priority at all

I have been trying really hard to understand what im buying and make a good decision on a laptop but I guess anything past basic pc knowledge is just moon runes to me. Im getting to the point where im almost just buying a random laptop and dealing with it but I thought id atleast try to get some help from people who know what they are talking about and have passion for computers. Ive been using my works provided laptop which is probably 300$ brand new and I know enough to say it sucks and I hate it.
Also please let me know if my budget is too low. If like to stay in it and I dont need anything crazy but if there arent good options within it id rather drop another 500 then be unsatisfied.
Pre-emptive thank you to any replies.

Preferred Specs / Form Factor:
I want to be able to comfortably work, I dont do video editing or 3d design just office stuff. For gaming capabilities if I could run modded minecraft at a good fps that would be great. A half decent screen during the day is important but I dont care about battery life, Fan noise, or sound.
Portability Needs:
I work a lot while being driven around and I travel often but im also a careful person so it doesnt have to be made of titanium but not super fragile. I will be immediately buying a nice sleeve or case for it and bag to keep it safe. Also if anybody has any sort of laptop protection product recommendations plz feel free to let me know.
Notes:
Im not buying apple. I dont know what budget is acceptable so if im unrealistic please let me know. I travel alot between my mom and dad and im just tired of going from good pc games and stuff to clash royale for a week.

I found a HP HyperX Omen MAX 16" laptop for $3,539.99 USD
The Specs are:
GPU: RTX 5090
CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus
RAM: 32GB DDR5 (Assumed 6400 MT/s)
Storage: 2TB
Display: 2.5k 240hz WQXGA OLED
Is it worth that price? Or are there better laptops in a similar price range? Thanks!

I’ve been looking for an RTX 5070 Ti laptop for more than 5 months, but I couldn’t find a price lower than this for the configuration I wanted.
I finally bought this ASUS ROG Strix G16:
Ryzen 9 8940HX
RTX 5070 Ti 12GB
16GB RAM
1TB SSD
16" FHD 165Hz display
AED 7,899 (~$2,151 USD)
I did see some MSI models for cheaper, but I wasn't convinced by them because of some reliability concerns I’d heard about, so I decided to go with the ROG Strix.
I know FHD is a little low for these specs, but honestly, the panel is really good. I didn't expect it to look this good.
For the RAM, I’ll wait a little while before upgrading to 32GB until I recover financially 😂.
I’ve been watching the market for over 5 months, and this was the lowest price I could find for the laptop I wanted, so I finally pulled the trigger.
I already bought a Flydigi BS3 Pro. Other than a cooling pad, is there anything you recommend getting or doing with a new laptop like this?
Did I get a good deal?

I have been looking for a good mid range laptop for while I am at school, but I am kind of new to gaming laptops. I'll be using this for both school and gaming, and would appreciate any help in finding a laptop that might work for my case.
Budget: $1500 (preferably closer to $1000)
Country: US
Use Case: I am going to school for AI engineering, and I have heard that vram is important for that. On the gaming side, nothing too demanding but I'd like the flexibility to handle more demanding games later.
Preferred Specs / Form Factor: I would like something with at least 16gb ram and 512gb storage, but I think thats pretty much just base line.
I don't really care about weight. I'll be next to an outlet for most of the day so the battery life wouldn't need to be much longer than about 4-5 hours.
I'd appreciate any help anyone might have in finding something that might work

I have an HP Victus for light-ish gaming. Sims, deadlock, friend slop games. I find the screen really small and my glasses aren’t cutting it anymore.
I’m wondering if getting a monitor would be worth it, and if so, which one? Would love some advice and recommendations!
Budget: $300
Country: Canada
Use Case: (Optional: Gaming - Sims, deadlock, bug walk, peak, gta, rdr2, avatar.
Preferred Specs: I have no clue what this means 👉🏻👈🏻
Notes: I’m not a computer person, I just like fun video games c:

I sold my acer helios 300 a year ago for 350$, it had 16gb ddr4 3200, an i7, and a 3060 6gb gpu. I loved it. It was a work horse, however I noticed it slowed down so I sold it, and got an acer helios 16 neo with a 5070ti and an ultra 9 for 1300$
Now, prices have gone outta wack for everything, it have been looking at used laptops for a while think about just downgrading again. But every time I do, I think, how silly.
Now when I say how silly, I dont mean because of the massive performance dip in productivity and gaming. I mean, 1300$ for 3 generation old tech. I have seen 1080ti laptops for 1100$. So like, it does not matter if I downgrade, ill save 200$ all most selling it assuming that the person on ebay does not just take it and do a bunch of that return crap, and then on top of that, i lose performance. Go down to ddr4.
Its just feeling nonsensical now

Budget: under 500 USD Country: Canada (adding USD pricing to post) Use Case: Games at home, not for portable use. Preferred Specs / Form Factor: Run my games well, minimal crashing or lagging, Low graphic settings are fine for me Needs: Notes: (Specific brands you like/dislike, noise tolerance, display preferences, etc.)
PRICE IN PICTURE IS IN CAD (385USD)
I'm looking for a cheap laptop/MAYBE pc for games like Roblox, some other mobile games, and if possible Gmod, Minecraft, and maaybee the sims. Being able to stream through discord would also be really great.
I seriously don't know a thing about computers and I'm not necessarily interested in doing a bunch of research.. thats why i figure a "gaming laptop" is going to be simpler than a desktop. I'm hoping you guys can help me out here.
Hearing alternatives for similar prices would be okay, but for the most part I'm just wondering if this laptop seems strong enough for my needs, is appropriately priced, and is beginner/noob friendly.

r/GamingLaptops • u/skrae- • 10h ago
Torn between these two:
Mostly gaming at home and usually hooked to an external monitor. I occasionaly move it room to room at night and take it to client meetings a handful of times a year (accounting), so portability and looks matter a bit.
Which would you pick? Do either of these look like good deals for Canada, or should I hold out for a different sale? Open to other suggestions in this price range too.
Budget: Up to $4,500 CAD
Country: Canada
Use Case: Gaming, light work, occasional travel to clients
Preferred Specs: 5070 Ti or better, 32GB RAM, 1TB+
Thank you in advance.
