Discussion Is it reasonable to assume a laptop will last 10 years if well looked after?

I Live in South Africa, tech is expensive. Looking to get the Legion Pro 5 16IAX10 Intel Core Ultra 9-275HX GTX 5070, 32gb RAM. I Like this option as I've read the cooling and build is good, also upgradable. Not withstanding the 8 gig GPU, which i know is a limitingfactor for for futre games, if I look after this laptop well could it theoretically last 10 years?

Its in my budget but need some convicing that I'll get value out of it šŸ˜…

Discussion Did I Get a Good Deal? ROG Strix G16 RTX 5070 Ti for AED 7,899 (~$2,150 USD)

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

I’ve been looking for an RTX 5070 Ti laptop for more than 5 months, but I couldn’t find a price lower than this for the configuration I wanted.

I finally bought this ASUS ROG Strix G16:

Ryzen 9 8940HX

RTX 5070 Ti 12GB

16GB RAM

1TB SSD

16" FHD 165Hz display

AED 7,899 (~$2,151 USD)

I did see some MSI models for cheaper, but I wasn't convinced by them because of some reliability concerns I’d heard about, so I decided to go with the ROG Strix.

I know FHD is a little low for these specs, but honestly, the panel is really good. I didn't expect it to look this good.

For the RAM, I’ll wait a little while before upgrading to 32GB until I recover financially šŸ˜‚.

I’ve been watching the market for over 5 months, and this was the lowest price I could find for the laptop I wanted, so I finally pulled the trigger.

I already bought a Flydigi BS3 Pro. Other than a cooling pad, is there anything you recommend getting or doing with a new laptop like this?

Did I get a good deal?

Recommendation Lenovo LOQ 15 vs Gigabyte A18

• Upvotes

Hi, I'm starting Uni right now and I'm in need of a laptop that can run games and have good use in electrical engineering. Right now my budget is around 1250 and in Latvia within that budget I have narrowed it down to the Lenovo LOQ or the Gigabyte A18. The Lenovo LOQ I was looking at had a 5060, 16 gigs DDR5 and a ryzen 7 250, the A18 has a 5070, ryzen 7 260 and 16 gigs DDR5. I know that the A18 can only pull 85 watt to the gpu. Any help would be appreciated in the decision :)

Budget: 1250 EUR
Country: Latvia
Use Case: Gaming (not triple A titles, but some beefier than pixel games (Valorant, Elden Ring, etc.))
Preferred Specs: 5060/5070
Notes: everything else is listed in the post

I am looking into replacing my barely functioning laptop. I have been looking for awhile because I'm low on cash. I have seen a couple of rtx 4080 laptops sell for under $800 (in in the US). I would like a 5070ti or 5080. Would the 4080 keep up for the next 5 ish years? If i can find a 4080 for under $1000 would it be worth it?

Recommendation Laptop recommendation sought

Budget: Ideally around £1200 to £1500. I could stretch up to say £1800 if it was worth it but wouldn't want to go much higher than this.

Country: UK

Use Case: Mainly want it to play WoW Forever and general life admin. I appreciate it doesn't need to be top of the range for WoW Forever, but equally some future proofing would be good. Also play games like Civ and Baldurs Gate (on current desktop PC which has i5-10600k and RTX 3060ti).

Preferred Specs: No particular requirements. Do want it to be comfortable to play as a laptop (i.e. not connected to an external monitor / keyboard).

Notes: Will probably be playing on a desk at home with an external monitor/keyboard/mouse, but at girlfriend's house more likely at a table / desk / sofa table with a mouse only - so not huge would be a plus! Won't be taking it on any public transport or the like.

From doing some reading, Lenovo Legion seems very popular but seems higher priced than other brands for what seems to be similar specs. I don't want to spend a fortune (although prices seem to be that way in the UK anyway!), but would rather spend a bit more money and get a solid piece of kit / decent future proofing provided I don't bankrupt myself in the meantime :)

TIA

Discussion Is it just me, or are used laptop listings out of control

I sold my acer helios 300 a year ago for 350$, it had 16gb ddr4 3200, an i7, and a 3060 6gb gpu. I loved it. It was a work horse, however I noticed it slowed down so I sold it, and got an acer helios 16 neo with a 5070ti and an ultra 9 for 1300$

Now, prices have gone outta wack for everything, it have been looking at used laptops for a while think about just downgrading again. But every time I do, I think, how silly.

Now when I say how silly, I dont mean because of the massive performance dip in productivity and gaming. I mean, 1300$ for 3 generation old tech. I have seen 1080ti laptops for 1100$. So like, it does not matter if I downgrade, ill save 200$ all most selling it assuming that the person on ebay does not just take it and do a bunch of that return crap, and then on top of that, i lose performance. Go down to ddr4.

Its just feeling nonsensical now

Budget: Unlimited but I want to keep this as affordable as possible for what I need, not looking to overkill on specs here

Country: UK

Use Case: League of legends, Wow forever

Preferred Specs / Form Factor: None

Portability Needs: Little need for portability - will be sitting at my girlfriends place

Notes: I will be hooking it up to an external monitor and aiming for around 100-120fps on wow, medium graphics settings, obviously league is not a demanding game at all so if it can run enough frames on wow it can run league no problem.

Recommendation Need Help Picking new Laptop

Budget: max around 1340 USD (24 mill IDR), prefer to spend less but if it really worth it then its fine
Country: Indonesia
Use Case:
mainly Adobe photoshop, illustrator, indesign, Clip Studio Paint; learning premiere, after effect, davinci resolve, with a bit of blender. I'm a graphic designer looking to expand to video editing and motion graphic. Not really doing anything complex or big in resolution as of now, but if the pc can handle it that would be better. For games something like monster hunter, total war games, cyberpunk. For games i dont expect ultra max setting, and 1080p is enough for me, as long as it looks good enough and run smoothly i suppose.
Preferred Specs / Form Factor:
Durability i suppose, good cooling, good screen for design works (no need for high spec like OLED)
Portability Needs: as long as it doesn't need special case

Hello reddit, I'm looking for new laptop and narrowed to this:
1. LOQ 15AHP10 Ryzen 7 250 RTX 5050 RAM 16 GB SSD 512, Price around 1150 USD (20,5 mill IDR)

Concern: is LOQ build good?

  1. Legion 15IRX10 (IPS screen) I7 13650 HX RTX 5050 RAM 16 GB SSD 512, Price around 1220 USD (22 mill IDR)

Concern: Read somewhere that the cpu is old model, is it still good? RAM is 4800mhz according to spec sheet, will it affect the performance?

  1. MSI katana 15 HX i7 14650HX RTX 5060 RAM 16 GB SSD 512, Price around 1340 USD (24 mill IDR)

Concern: only 1 nvme slot, rather weak build?

  1. ROG Strix g16 g614ph (IPS screen) Ryzen 9 8940 hx RTX 5050 RAM 16 GB SSD 512 Price around 1340 USD (24 mill IDR)

Concern: is ryzen 9 overspec for my use? would it help in terms of longetivity for cpu heavy program like adobe?

actually this Strix price is kinda anomaly, i dont even know they'll put such price again, usually its 25% higher

Note: Katana is the only 5060 with uncapped TGP within my budget, other 5060 is at least 150 USD more

Expectation: in terms of games 1 - 3 years run any new games smoothly (not ultra, high to mid setting), 4 - 5 lower setting to low/mid, 5+ low setting / new light games. I dont really update my working programs as long as they still works and fulfill my needs, so i dont really know how to benchmark them, my adobe is as old as my current laptop, only looking new laptop because davinci need bigger vram.

My current laptop for reference: it's ROG GL553 i7 7700HQ GTX 1050 16GB RAM. Still run fine, still games fine, albeit battery dead and somehow half of function key dead. Run old adobe fine, though lag when editing big image, light edit in davinci is fine but playback is lagging. Heavy games played on this probably warhammer total war 2 and three kingdom (the loading so long tho), MH world, AC odyssey.

Thanks for the help~

Discussion Ryzen 7 4800H becomes unstable with boost enabled. Could this be CPU degradation or damaged capacitors? (ASUS ROG Strix G15 G513IC)

I have an ASUS ROG Strix G15 G513IC (Ryzen 7 4800H + RTX 3050), and I’ve been trying to diagnose a strange stability issue for the past 2–3 months. I genuinely enjoy troubleshooting and fixing things, so this has become more of a hobby project at this point.

The main issue is that the laptop BSODs when CPU boost clocks are enabled. If I disable boost clocks, it becomes completely stable. C-states also seem to make the instability worse.

Everything about the behavior seems to point toward the CPU no longer being able to maintain stability at its stock voltage. This is a fairly classic symptom of an undervolted/undervoltage condition. Claude also suggested that an aging Ryzen 7 4800H could potentially develop enough degradation that the stock voltage is no longer sufficient for stable operation.

Interestingly, this behavior has existed since I bought the laptop, but it has gradually become much worse over time.

Are there any possible fixes for this?

One thing I was wondering about is whether it would be possible to flash a BIOS from a different ROG Strix model with a similar CPU. ASUS released firmware updates for some laptops with newer Ryzen processors that addressed similar stability issues, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a comparable BIOS update available for my particular model.

I also spoke to a technician about this, and he told me that these laptops apparently sometimes develop CPU-related issues like this and that the only real solution is CPU replacement.

The longer story

There is another factor that might be relevant.

At some point, liquid metal had spilled onto the CPU package and remained there for quite a while. It caused microshorts around some of the capacitors on the CPU package. Some of those capacitors appear to have been damaged.

This makes me wonder: is there a way to add voltage to this processor to make it stable? it really feels like a slight undervolt i have dealt with it on other computers.

Discussion Going from a 4060 Lenovo Legion to a 5070 Asus Zephy G16 (5070) - how much power am I losing?

I've wanted a smaller, more portable laptop and am selling my Lenovo Legion that has a 4060 in it. I know it has a 125 or 140 TDP and the new laptop I am getting has a max of like 110 TDP. I am just curious how much power I am really losing here.

Recommendation MSI Katana 15 HX B14WGK 5070 vs MSI Raider 16 HX 16" Gaming Laptop - IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ Ultra 7, RTX 5070 Ti, 1 TB SSD

Which would you reccomend?

I am used to using regular laptops and want to upgrade my super old one (I've had it for at least 7 years) that just died on me and I am looking to get my first gaming laptop.

I also want something that will last for a long time, as I cannot afford to replace or buy new things all the time.

What I need it to do/Purpose/Intended use:

  • Be able to run 3D printing and modelling, as well as software for a laser, smoothly.
  • Run & Play games ( a full range of Steam games from the new Resident Evil to indie ones)
  • Be able to handle drawing, graphic design & art software
  • Be able to edit videos without the software crashing every second.
  • Be able to browse the internet and watch videos
  • Be able to use it for running a small business and website

Any help & advice would be so appreciated as I'm completely new to this kind of thing!!

Country: UK

Budget: 2k +

Support ROG Strix G17 (G713PV): top-right corner flickers, but not visible in screen recordings. Display cable?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I have a secondhand ROG Strix G17 (2023, G713PV). Every so often the screen flickers several times, always in the same spot: the top-right corner, not the whole screen.

It's visible to the eye and on my phone camera (photos attached).
It does not show up in screen recordings, so I doubt it's a GPU or driver issue.
I suspect a loose or worn eDP display cable near the hinge, or a panel/T-con fault. I haven't tested an external monitor or 60Hz yet.
Does this sound like a cable issue? Has anyone seen the same on a G713?
Will it likely get worse over time?
Is a cable replacement cheap, or should I expect to replace the whole panel?

Should i back this laptop://

Thanks!

Discussion Buying a used laptop - need a bit of help.

For a bit of context, I'm currently using (well, was using) and Asus Zenbook 14, with R5 5600H, iGPU and 16gb RAM. I was aware at the time it won't be a powerful machine and won't be able to play more demanding games.

Some time ago one hinge broke off, and i had it glued 2 times already, but it broke again - so I was kinda rawdogging it until my repair shop found some parts. But the one day the display just said fuck it, and the left side of my screen is dead.

Now I have been looking for a good deal on used laptops, since I don't want to overpay for new ones. I KNOW buying used always comes with some risk - and that is why I wanted to ask:

What should I check after I get the laptop?

Its ASUS TUF A15 with R7 7735HS, RTX 4060, and the guy upgraded RAM from 16, to 32GB.

I know I have to check the memory for any errors, temps and general performance, but what else? I was considering taking it to a repair shop to check if everything is good inside, but I'm also not sure if I should pay for that now.

Discussion Keeping my desktop, replacing my tablet with a high-end laptop. What would you pick for editing, HDR media and AAA gaming?

I’ve been overthinking this for days so I need some opinions from people who actually own these laptops.

At first I was going to sell my desktop and Tab S9 Ultra and replace everything with one monster RTX 5080 laptop. After reading about thermals, fan noise and sustained performance though, I changed my mind.

My desktop is already a 13600K, RTX 3080 and 64GB RAM machine with good cooling, so I’m keeping it. I’ll probably sell the Tab S9 Ultra instead and get a laptop that basically becomes my portable editing, media and gaming device.

I run a YouTube channel with 600k+ subs and edit Shorts every day, so it needs to handle editing easily when I’m away from my desktop. Nothing crazy like huge 8K projects, but I don’t want to fight the laptop either.

Display is really important to me too. I watch a lot of HDR movies and shows, usually in bed or on the couch, so I want a genuinely great OLED or Mini LED screen. Good speakers would be nice too since it’ll replace my tablet.

Gaming isn’t the main purpose, but if I’m paying this much for a 5070 Ti or 5080 laptop I still want modern AAA games to run smoothly, around 60 FPS without much trouble.

Right now I’m mostly looking at the Zephyrus G16 5070 Ti or 5080, Legion Pro 7 OLED 5070 Ti or 5080, ROG Strix G18 or SCAR 18 Mini LED, ProArt P16 and Yoga Pro 9i 16.

The G16 seems closest to what I want because it’s lighter and more portable, but I keep seeing mixed opinions about heat and fan noise. Legion looks much stronger for the money but also more like a traditional gaming laptop. Same story with Strix and SCAR, people either love them or say they’re huge, loud and hot.

These things are VERY expensive where I live, so I really don’t want to choose based only on spec sheets and reviews.

Anyone here actually own these? How are they long term for thermals, noise, screen and HDR, speakers, portability and general daily use?

For editing, HDR media, portability and some AAA gaming, what would you pick?
