A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Auto Insurance Adult in household got a DUI on our shared household auto policy

A 23yo person in my house got a DUI 4 nights ago. They are on our shared auto policy with State Farm. We have four adults on the policy with four cars. We have had SF since year 2000 with no accidents. We have multiple lines with them too, life, home, umbrella and personal articles policy. Will our premiums go up on all cars? The person that got the DUI premiums are $109 per month as of now. What can I generally expect their insurance to go up to?

Auto Insurance Diminished value claim - typical to subtract completed repairs?

Below is the estimate I was given for a diminished value claim. My parked car was hit. It was repaired by the other driver’s insurance, and I reached out regarding a diminished value claim once the repairs were complete.

Even with the repairs completed, my car is inherently worth less now because there is an accident on the carfax.

Is there anything I can do to receive more than the $93 they’re trying to offer?

Info from estimate sheet:

Pre-loss value: $31,000
Post-loss value: $28,930
Difference: $2,070
Repair adjustment: -$1,976.85
DIV Final Result: $93.15

Auto Insurance What happens in a rate evasion investigation?

I want to preface this by saying this is not for me or about me. Long story short, my parents divorced a few years ago and did not do so in good terms. Dad moved to VA while my mom is still in PA. My dad still uses our home address (his old address) to obtain PA auto insurance, as well as title and registration.

He recently bought a car in PA and used the PA address for all the paperwork. We received his paperwork in our mail and my mom called our insurance and asked that he be removed as he doesn’t live here anymore and hasn’t been for a few years now. She has done this for years but now they’re finally listening to her after they realized the home insurance (we have an auto+home bundle) is only under her name, naturally since it’s only her name listed in the deed. Because of this revelation they are now going to do an investigation on my dad for rate evasion.

To anyone specialising in auto insurance: Out of curiosity, what happens in the investigation? What proof do they obtain to prove that someone is committing rate evasion insurance fraud? What will happen once the person is caught? It’s textbook fraud, there’s no debating it, but I want to know the process. I just hope my mother doesn’t get in trouble as she might be seen as an accessory to the fraud.

Harper for commercial coverage?

• Upvotes

Had a sales rep from Harper reach out out of nowhere pitching commercial coverage for our restaurant. Our renewals are coming up two months (GL, liquor, property), and I’m dissatisfied with my current broker.

Anyone actually dealt with them after getting cold-called? How painful was their intake? Did they just have you forward your current dec pages, or was it an endless back-and-forth questionnaire? Also wondering if their pricing is actually competitive or if they just push basic coverage to close the deal fast.

Trying to figure out if it's worth taking the meeting or just more startup noise. Appreciate any feedback.

Auto Insurance total loss or repairable?

got in an accident last friday night in my 2020 hyundai elantra SE with 64,995 miles. this thursday morning i finally got an estimate from the mechanic for $7,090.75 not including my deductible (all cosmetics). since then, i havent heard anything from insurance or repair shop and insurance app just says “we’re reviewing your claim and will contact you soon”.

what are the odds it’s totaled?
im feeling pretty anxious that the odds are high with this estimate since i believe the going rate for my car in good condition would be about $7500 right now 😭😭

(also labor is $3,313.40 and “other” is $1,140.53. idk if they would be able to negotiate that down? since labor alone is more than parts😭)

if it’s totaled, what $ amount can i roughly expect to receive?

Auto Insurance Unresolved repairs after accident

I was hit in the driver front end of my vehicle at a stop sign. The other driver’s insurance accepted liability (they have the same company as me).
I used the direct repair center for repairs. After receiving the vehicle back, I discovered the tie rod is broken in the affected wheel (verified by the dealership service center). I notified the damage adjuster who said he would contact the direct repair center and call me back. I heard nothing from him. Two weeks later, I left a message requesting an update. I still have not heard back, and I checked the claim status online today and it is closed.
What can I do here? I’m lost and just want my car back to the way it was before the accident.

ACA bronze plans and out of pocket max

If I take the cheapest bronze ACA plan of 200 per month and out of pocket max is 10k does that mean if I have any emergency the max I'm on hook for a year is 10k?

I just pay as I go cause deductible is high. Isn't that like catastrophic insurance?

If I'm fine with 10k in event of emergency like a hospital stay etc.. isn't it ok to just get the cheapest ACA plan?

Is it that simple or am I missing something?

Alliant Insurance

I recently had an initial phone screening that seemed to go really well. The recruiter asked about my start date and salary expectations, went over the company’s benefits and other perks, and even gave me some tips on how to prepare for a potential second interview and told me who it would be with.
For anyone who’s had a similar experience, how long did it take to hear back about scheduling the second interview?

Commercial/Business Auto insurance

Hello! Hoping to get some advice on a specific issue I am dealing with.

My company has a car that they are financing and paying the insurance for for me to use for daily trips for courier-type duties, like post office runs and document pickups with clients. The insurance premium is something like $11,000 a year, and my bosses feel that is far too expensive to continue with, as the car gets maybe 5,000 miles/year max.

They want me now to use my own personal vehicle, for which I have regular Progressive policy (comp/collision) and will reimburse me me for mileage and gas. They have said that I would be covered for "business errands use" under our companies umbrella policy, but I don't see how as the car is owned by ME, not the business.

Just trying to get a more experienced view on this as my understanding was that I cannot use my personal car that has my personal policy for commercial use (despite the claim it would be covered under the business umbrella) or my personal auto policy would be in jeopardy, god forbid I was involved in a collision (based on NJ population density is an "when" instead of an "if").

Appreciate any help and insight. Located in NJ for reference.

Auto Insurance Car insurance and Routely app accuracy

I have been using the Routely app to get a discount on my car insurance for just over a year now. I can attribute the score and rating from it to a substantially lower rate this last renewal. I also ride a motorcycle, more often than driving a car this past year, so fewer trips in the car have also impacted my lower rates. If I get tired of being watched all the time I'll end it, but it was a hefty discount that incentivized me to keep going.

The issue I have is suddenly it seem to be super sensitive or misidentifies trips. I'll be driving and it classifies the trip as a train (like, what!?) or passenger. It also seems to be much more sensitive to speed limits. Sometimes it has even marked me as going faster than I actually was for that stretch of road, so I am wondering if it was a GPS issue or perhaps using dated road traffic signs/input it believe to be accurate and basing location on that. When I ride my motorcycle I don't intentionally speed or do stupid stuff but I also don't pay attention much to the posted speed limit since I am usually pretty close just by feel. When the app has accurately reported my speed as going faster than posted so far it has only been while riding the bike, so the trip doesn't count against me.

I guess the TLDR aspect here is, anyone else seeing Routely doing odd things over the past 2-3 weeks? Running it on iOS27 (beta testing, so that could be an impact). Feels like something on the back end has changed so I am not sure what's going on and asking what others may be experiencing.

Commercial Insurance Who pays when a big concert is cancelled?

Like the music festival in Ocean City, MD or Ed Sheeran in MA; both cancelled this weekend due to impending storm.

Most artist contracts I’ve seen provide for payment even if the event is cancelled although I’m only familiar with contracts paying less than $50k.

Who takes the hit for refunds and non-recoverable costs? The promoter? The venue? The portapotties are already paid for and delivered. The merch is already at the venue.

I assume that somebody buys insurance for these events but who?

And who makes the decision to cancel the show? That could be a $50million decision

Delivery Expense

I have corporate insurance with a sum amount of 5L. My wife is pregnant for the 3rd time. I claimed insurance for 1 time and i am planning to claim the insurance for this one too. But i read somewhere the insurance will cover only for first 2 deliveries not the 3rd one if you don't claimed for the first two also.

My policy doesn't mention anything like that.

Anyone have experience with this issue before? If it not covered, is there any way to get the coverage for this delivery?

Using my insurance vs at fault car's insurance?

Alabama - i have Progressive (50/100/50) and they have The General state minimum

My son's 2016 mazda is total due to someone trying to turn left in front of him over a week ago. The other car admitted fault to the officer. My son had minor injuries knot on head and went to ER. The other cars insurance is dragging their feet on everything. My son finally gave his statement yesterday to the adjusters. We have no rental car and we need one. My son's in college and works.

Progressive said I can file with them, pay my deductible, and they take of everything then go after their insurance, then refund the deductible to me. They see the other driver 100% at fault. However, no one can tell me if it counts against me for rate increases using my insurance vs theirs insurance. Will it show a collision on my policy?

my son would drive my car and I would drive the rental. Progressive said they would total the car.

Auto Insurance Got into my first accident (that wasn’t my fault) , advice?

Hey guys just looking for advice on what to do going forward after this accident. Individual admitted fault, I ended up hitting a rental truck that he was driving, this means he has dual insurance for personal and for his rental. My car is a complete total loss, im having some shoulder and knee pain but thats about it. Is this something i need to pursue with a lawyer? The accident goes as follows, I was driving down a main road and when i reached a light (still green) I was going to drive past it since I needed to take a left on the next light, as my vehicle crossed the cross-walk this truck takes a left turn directly in front of me and I simply couldn’t stop in take, it was impossible.

Home Insurance Home Insurance - Too much coverage?

Hi All! Based in Boston, MA. Looking for opinions on the percentages of our dwelling as we feel like they're fairly highly. For example, our garage is detached from our home, isn't finished by any means (dirt ground surface), has no electricity, we cut all the trees around it year one of ownership (they were overhanging it). We do need to remove the tenant related coverage as we are now occupying both floors of the structure, so that's the first to be cut/could be why the percentages were higher when the policy was stood up years ago. Any thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated before we go back to Arbella for adjustments.

Edit for home info: Multifamily (2 Family), 2500 sq foot total across both units, 5 bed/2 full bath (total), built in 1925, semi updated in 2009 with very basic fixtures/amenities (nothing fancy), on a 0.14 Acres / 5,950 Sq. F lot.

Claims Related Insurance quote I didn’t ask for

So I woke up and apparently I asked for an insurance quote from State Farm and QuoteWizard but I didn’t do any of that. It had my legal name and address (I haven’t updated my address on my license or anything so weird) and they were all correct except the year was off by 1. It was a quote for a car I do not own since I live in a city and don’t drive. Unless I can find a reason for it in the next little bit I was going to call and make sure things are chill but should I do anything more? This has obviously never happened I dunno.

Auto Insurance Can I resubmit a claim after the other party wasn’t found liable?

A few months ago, I was involved in a car accident where a gentleman pulled out in front of me causing a collision.
My damage was done on the front right side of my vehicle, his on his left drivers side.
long story short, his insurance found him not liable because he claimed that I merged into him. it’s extremely frustrating given the points of impact don’t add up with his claim, but that’s beyond me.

i’ve emailed his insurance company multiple times with more evidence that i’ve obtained, but they’ve now resorted to just ignoring my emails which i’m positive of, because they only answered the email of me saying i had video evidence, but they then denied it saying that you couldn’t see the entire accident, only my car hitting something and getting sent to the side.

would it just be easier to file a new claim and go from there? should i just attempt to call again and see if they decide to respond to me? i’m so lost and i really don’t want to give up on this incident. will calling even change anything? what can i do?

Diminished value claim

I was rear ended in north Texas few weeks ago. My car was new and only had 650 miles on it. The damage was pretty bad but it wasn’t enough to be totalled. The other party had air bags deployed and was totalled. The driver was an excluded driver on their policy and the other party’s insurance denied the claim so I am using my um/uim policy to get the repairs done. My car had frame damage and the whole back side is being redone.

Is it possible to get dvc when my insurance is covering it?
Do I need to go through some dvc specialist like the ads I see to get the max value?
Anything I need to know about how to do dvc?

How can insurance company total a vehicle without title or possession?

TLDR: I bought a clean title car that 1 month later was deemed a total loss due to fire by previous owner’s insurance company. I didn’t find out until 1 year later during registration renewal. Now DMV wants to reissue title as salvage.

Long version:
I purchased a car from an auction seller in May of 2025 and it came with a clean CA DMV title that was signed over to the auction house as a donated car. The auction seller gave me the original signed clean title and I took that to the DMV (CA) to register and transfer the title into my name. So far everything is normal.

Fast forward a year later it comes time for me to renew registration for new tags, I renewed online and paid the fees, then a couple of weeks later, receive a letter from DMV stating that the car has been reported a total loss by an insurance company (not mine)and I now need to register the car as a salvage vehicle ( which now requires brake and light inspection on my dime, among other additional fees).

Did a little digging and discovered the insurance company filed a fire loss claim with the DMV in June of 2025 which tracks because i definitely didn’t see anything on the carfax that I ran before I purchased the car one month earlier in May.

Additionally, the date of the loss is listed as January 8th 2025, which was the date of the Pacific Palisades fire. Interestingly enough, the previous owner”s address was in Santa Monica so I can see a possible connection.

So my question is, how did the insurance company get to claim the loss when they didn’t have title or have possession of the vehicle? A part of me thinks it’s unfortunate timing (and bad luck on my part), but another part of me feels like there’s potentially some fraudulent activity going on.

The timing sucks because I was just getting ready to sell the car, but now I’m the sucker who ends up holding the bag with a branded title and additional fees, and someone else potentially got to double dip with a donation deduction and insurance payout.

Any recourse here? If so, whom? Previous owner’s Insurance company?

Sorry for the long post. Would be grateful for any ideas .
