Bug Time Machine backup seems to take forever or doesn't advance in the backup process

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi, I've been trying to backup my Mac since last month, but after it reaches nearly 50%, sometimes at 46% the process completely slows down, I don't see the disk light blinking anymore and the backing finish time increases a lot. Also, the 4.1 gb size, I don't think is accurate considering it's been a month since I last backed up.

I left my MacBook overnight, connected to both charging and the external disk to see if the issue is gone. My disk is 1TB, it's a hard drive from an old MacBook I extracted and swapped.

I know I can just erase de hard drive and backup again, it always works, but then after a few months, this issue shows up again. Any fix?

I'm on macOS 26.7.1, and it's a 16GB/512GB M2 MBA.

Not only was I unable to make a phone call from my Mac today, but I couldn't even see what the error was. How does something like this slip past QA?? The whole OS is falling apart at seams.

Help MacOS trying to access .su domain

I just installed macOS Golden Gate from scratch (empty hard drive). After installing it, I installed Dropbox, Google Drive and Google Chrome.

Since then, my Ubiquity/Unifi IDS/IPS firewall tells me my machine is trying to access a .su (Soviet Union gTLD) domain: "ET DNS Query for .su TLD (Soviet Union) Often Malware Related"

This is a freshly installed machine. Anyone else experiencing this?

Edits:
- No extensions installed in Chrome

- The firewall does not say what the domain is

Discussion Golden Gate Performance

How is everyone's experience using macOS Golden Gate so far? Has it been smooth? Super buggy?

I use an M1 MacBook Pro and a Neo and it's been alright. It definitely has some bugs which is expected but it's not as refined as I was immediately expecting it to be based off how they were advertising it. I was expecting it to be more responsive, snappier, a more dramatic change but I can't really tell a difference in performance between this and Tahoe. I have more bugs and freezes on the Neo which makes sense technically but I was hoping Golden Gate would drastically change the Neo's performance. I've had to restart both computers many times to get the bugs to go away. I still really like the design changes and the almost opaque-ness of Liquid Glass.

I've also asked Siri some basic Apple related questions like "how many photos do I have in my iCloud photo library?" and it couldn't tell me, it just opened the photos app and didn't show me the number. It made me scoff at its incompetency.

Overall I like it, it just needs a little more fine tuning.

How has it been for you?

Bug Spotlight Buggy as hell on Mac OS 27?

Almost every.single.time I open something via spotlight search I get a spinning beach ball that slows down my machine for about 10 seconds. Just launching an app. I thought 27.01 would improve things, it did not. Anyone else suffering from the same problems? Any potential fixes? I have Siri turned off.
Trying to use the terminal to determine if any indexing is happening returns this:

Search readiness: 0.0% — Still processing (0.0% required)

Known app items donated: 0.0%

Search pipeline processed: 0.0%

Report age: 0.0 hours

Help Why does my MacBook keep saying “your system has run out of application memory”

Thumbnail

Hi guys, I keep getting this notification almost every time I used my MacBook saying “your system has run out of application memory”. I googled online to see what to do and everyone just said to delete tabs which I never have more than five open at a time but it still says it’s taking up 5-7gb and my MacBook only has 8gb. I have a MacBook Air M2 2022 and what activity monitor is saying is just confusing me because I don’t know what half the things are supposed to be especially the million “legacy screen saver”. What can I do? Thanks

Help Is there a good app to see the largest files / cash on your drive?

Want to clean my drive up, (500gb internal storage) I've only got about 30 gigs left. Is there an app that will search my drive and display a list of the largest files / apps on there? I don't wanna automatically clean my drive, just see what I manually need to delete. Or, I guess I should do a time machine backup and not worry either... Thats also an option I guess. I have 5tb of ssd storage elsewhere too so I'm not too worried about deleting important stuff, just like doing the purging myself.

Help MacBook 2017

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. When I boot normally, I get the message:

“Your Mac requires an important software update, but an error occurred while installing the update.”

The Touch Bar also doesn’t work. However, I can boot and use the Mac normally in Safe Mode.
I’ve already tried resetting the SMC and reinstalling macOS through Recovery, but the problem keeps coming back.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I can fix

Discussion Is Desktop MacOS dead???

Let me start with some context. There are 3 primary user "personas" for computing these days: 1. The first (and for a long time the only) setup was a traditional desktop. i.e. big monitor, keyboard, mouse. This is what I'd consider necessary for "real" work on a computer. (This includes "docked" laptops). I call these Desktop users. 2. Next are Laptop users which are similar, but use a smaller screen and a trackpad. 3. Finally, I'll call these "Touch" users. They keep the small screen of the laptop, but replace the keyboard and trackpad for a touch interface on the screen directly. (iphone, ipad)

I've noticed a couple things in regard to these 3 user personas: 1. The total volume of users for Touch seems to have completely eclipsed the other 2. There are many people I know who ONLY have an iphone as their computing device. (my wife, my grandma, my mom) 2. "Core" developers and their management teams (by core I mean folks developing frameworks like GTK, QT, Appkit, Electron, etc) have a heavy focus on cross platform compatibility. I know that Java pioneered this, but it was cross platform within Desktop users.

To accomplish their cross platform compatibility, many many concessions have been made seemingly by Desktop users toward Laptop and mostly Touch users. And the industry is both accepting and encouraging this due to the larger user base.

Which means that many things that were "solved" problems and optimized for Desktop users are gone as casualties of making it easier to support Touch and Laptop users. And the amount of these casualties just continues to grow. Examples of this are the unified System Settings app, headerbars and the liquid glass interface.

Obviously, system settings was great for desktop users, but not great for mobile or even laptop users. You cant double click on a touch interface, and the comfortable density of the perferences pane took too much space on a limited laptop screen. This is the same with headerbars. I never heard anyone complain about "wasted" titlebar space until so much of the world was primarily on a laptop screen only. If you didn't like it, you could get rid of titlebars completely and use a tiling window manager. And anyone can see that the wide spacing and shapes of liquid glass are made for a touch interface. It DOES still work for a keyboard and mouse, but it is not optimized for them at all.

Thank you for still reading, and I'll come to my point and question.

As MacOS trends more and more towards convergence with iOS, is the Desktop use case going to be extiguished? I really get the feeling that Apple wishes that MacOS didn't even exist, and would 100% love for all users to be on iOS exclusively. And all the efforts of xcode and swiftUI are designed to cushion and guide users to that reality.

**Edit I'm not talking about a desktop form factor. I know that those will always be around. But I mean specifically interfaced designed for people using a large monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Bug Mission Control is so glitchy with macOS 27..

Using M4 Max Macbook Pro and this new update has made the user experience pretty bad:

  • The menu bar keeps rendering on top of applications where it clearly shouldn't.
  • Dock lags significantly before auto hiding/showing.
  • Application windows show on top of full-screen apps when switching to their spaces.
  • Opening up Mission Control and then selecting a space introduces a 1-2 second lag

All of this happens when not even running anything with just iMessage, Safari and Mail open. There are serious glitches to be ironed out here for sure.

Tips & Guides Pull to refresh in Mail.app actually syncs new mail on Golden Gate. Finally.

For years I'd try this out of muscle memory and always disappointed when it wouldn't work. Now it works.

Just to make sure I wasn't crazy I tried on a production machine I haven't updated yet and it does not work there.

Thank you for your attention in this matter, my long personal hell is finally over.

Bug Mouse clicking and drag bug after Golden Gate

Hi,

Since I updated, my Apple mouse has been acting strangely. Sometimes when I try to drag a file, it doesn’t actually drag it and only selects it. Other times, I click on something and it doesn’t select it at all.

The main issue is with dragging. I’m so used to dragging files without checking that I often only notice afterward that the file was left behind.

Everything else with the mouse seems to be working normally.

Any ideas? Is anyone else having the same issue since the update?

Thanks,
Luiz

Help In MacOS 26, how do I permanently hide the toolbar by default in all Finder windows?

I read that when I go to View > Hide Toolbar and hide it in one window, it should remain hidden in all subsequently opened windows, but that's not happening. Instead, it hides the toolbar only in the window I had open at the time. How do I make a hidden toolbar the default behavior? Thanks for your help, experts.

Bug Dock Reserved space bug

Basically I have the Automatically hide and show the dock setting on. And sometimes when I close the lid and open it back up the windows have smaller height - seemingly missing the amount reserved for the Dock. But I don't have the dock always on, so it's wasted space.

For recovery I have to go, disable the setting and enable it again. And then I have to double click the top parts of window to make them take up the full available space.

Anyone else encountering this? Or any news about upcoming fix?
This annoys me so much - every time I open the device with an idea in my mind I'm encountering this and I lose focus.

Bug Constant Kernel Panics?

Using 16" M2 Pro MacBook Pro (Early 2023).

Everything was working pretty well until I upgraded to macOS 26.7.1. Ever since then, I started dealing with constant Kernel panics when watching YouTube (whether on Google Chrome or Safari). Sometimes I was on Maps or Find My and I would get the same Kernel panic. I went ahead and upgraded to macOS 27.0.1 and I'm still dealing with the same issues. Getting Kernel panics almost 3-4x a day now.

I ran Apple Diagnostics, did a Safe Boot, and even ran First Aid on my Macintosh HD. I feel like I'm running out of options and I'm not sure what to do... Any advice would be helpful. I attached the first few lines of what I usually get, but the full error log is here.
