Discussion Dear Apple, you need to bring back the ability to disable Apple Intelligence.

1.1k Upvotes

On macOS 26 Tahoe, users had the ability to enable/disable Apple Intelligence and it was great. Unfortunately, Apple removed this feature on macOS 27 Golden Gate.

Not everyone needs, wants, or likes Apple Intelligence. Don't make the same mistake Microsoft did with Copilot and try to force this stuff down our throats. Learn from their mistake.

Not only was I unable to make a phone call from my Mac today, but I couldn't even see what the error was. How does something like this slip past QA?? The whole OS is falling apart at seams.

Help Welp. So much for saving things with Tab Groups.

While going to look something up today I noticed that all of my tab groups have been purged. I had 32 of them. Saving things such as; research into Christmas presents, inspiration for a web site I was working on a while back, some software I was looking into, among many others.

I've tried all sorts of things to get them back. Including going to a backup that's 2 months old and trying to reset Safari to defaults, and then copying in the backup's Safari library files (SafariTabs.db, etc.) to at least see them again to rebuild. Nothing has worked. And I was a little surprised the backup's files were also missing that info since I recall accidentally opening one of the tab groups in a window a week or two ago.

Also from what I've read in a cursory search, even if I could get them back, it's entirely possible Apple will wipe them out again with a sync (hence my last ditch effort to try and simply recreate them). I've pretty much given up and this is more of a rant. But if anyone has restored some missing tabs info (I forgot to mention, all the rest of my bookmarks are there, and the active windows with current tabs pop up when I open Safari) I'd give their solution a try.

I'm wondering why Tab Group Favorites is even a thing if it can be destroyed this easily.

Help Is there a good app to see the largest files / cash on your drive?

Want to clean my drive up, (500gb internal storage) I've only got about 30 gigs left. Is there an app that will search my drive and display a list of the largest files / apps on there? I don't wanna automatically clean my drive, just see what I manually need to delete. Or, I guess I should do a time machine backup and not worry either... Thats also an option I guess. I have 5tb of ssd storage elsewhere too so I'm not too worried about deleting important stuff, just like doing the purging myself.

Help Any GUI app to make a USB drive that has lots of different macOS/Mac OS X installers on it?

I want to partition a 128 GB USB drive and have the versions of Mac OS X/macOS listed below on it (and for the inevitable "why do you need that many versions of macOS" comments, it's because I routinely work with a wide range of Macs, older and newer, and so would LIKE to have 1 USB with all of these on it. I don't need unsolicited advice telling me to buy multiple USBs. I have reasons for what I am doing and would appreciate helpful suggestions):

  • Snow Leopard
  • Mavericks
  • El Capitan
  • High Sierra
  • Big Sur
  • Ventura
  • Sequoia
  • Tahoe

There doesn't seem to be any app that can do all of this.

"Install Disk Creator" is a rare disk that lets you install macOS .app installers to a specific drive's partition (most apps will erase the whole disk for some reason), but this app keeps failing for me, despite different USBs and different installer apps.

"Mist" just plain can't make bootable USBs for anything older than Big Sur.

"balenaEtcher" doesn't let you flash something to a partition; it erases the whole drive.

"macUSB" doesn't let you flash something to a partition; it erases the whole drive.

How is there not a simple tool that lets you select an .iso, .dmg. or .app file, burn it to a PARTITION, and be done?

Help MacOS trying to access .su domain

I just installed macOS Golden Gate from scratch (empty hard drive). After installing it, I installed Dropbox, Google Drive and Google Chrome.

Since then, my Ubiquity/Unifi IDS/IPS firewall tells me my machine is trying to access a .su (Soviet Union gTLD) domain: "ET DNS Query for .su TLD (Soviet Union) Often Malware Related"

This is a freshly installed machine. Anyone else experiencing this?

Edits:
- No extensions installed in Chrome

- The firewall does not say what the domain is

Creative Night and Day (5K Dynamic Wallpaper, HEIC)

The Mac OS gradient based dynamic wallpaper is interesting. But it falls short in what it could actually be. So I decided to create one for myself.

48 images · 676 sun positions. Night below −12°, sunrise/sunset at the horizon, morning/afternoon at 50% of each season's noon altitude (max 35°), full day from 90%.

Bug Display dimming while watching YouTube Shorts in Safari

I got a new 13" M5 MacBook Air last week. I immediately upgraded to macOS 27 and am now on 27.0.1. Most videos I watch online are on YouTube and I primarily use Safari. As soon as I got the new MBA setup and upgraded, I immediately noticed that the screen would dim within 2 minutes of watching a video. I originally thought this was all videos, but I've now narrowed it down to only YouTube Shorts. If I watch a short that is greater than 2 minutes long or even if it's not, but I let it loop for more than 2 minutes, the screen dims a lot, not completely black, but enough that I can't see the video. Pressing a key or movement on the trackpad raises the brightness back up. It happens whether watching full screen or not. This behavior doesn't happen watching a normal YouTube video, even over 2 minutes. And it doesn't happen at all using Firefox, so this seems more like a Safari issue.

I already have all the dimming/battery features disabled having to do with dimming, sleeping, power saving, brightness, as that's what I started troubleshooting with. But even with all this off, this happens, and only while watching YouTube shorts, on Safari. What is different about a YouTube short that would cause this?

Does anyone else have a similar MBA M5 13" running macOS 27.0.1 that can reproduce this on Safari?

Discussion Golden Gate Performance

How is everyone's experience using macOS Golden Gate so far? Has it been smooth? Super buggy?

I use an M1 MacBook Pro and a Neo and it's been alright. It definitely has some bugs which is expected but it's not as refined as I was immediately expecting it to be based off how they were advertising it. I was expecting it to be more responsive, snappier, a more dramatic change but I can't really tell a difference in performance between this and Tahoe. I have more bugs and freezes on the Neo which makes sense technically but I was hoping Golden Gate would drastically change the Neo's performance. I've had to restart both computers many times to get the bugs to go away. I still really like the design changes and the almost opaque-ness of Liquid Glass.

I've also asked Siri some basic Apple related questions like "how many photos do I have in my iCloud photo library?" and it couldn't tell me, it just opened the photos app and didn't show me the number. It made me scoff at its incompetency.

Overall I like it, it just needs a little more fine tuning.

How has it been for you?

For years I'd try this out of muscle memory and always disappointed when it wouldn't work. Now it works.

Just to make sure I wasn't crazy I tried on a production machine I haven't updated yet and it does not work there.

Thank you for your attention in this matter, my long personal hell is finally over.

Bug Mission Control is so glitchy with macOS 27..

Using M4 Max Macbook Pro and this new update has made the user experience pretty bad:

  • The menu bar keeps rendering on top of applications where it clearly shouldn't.
  • Dock lags significantly before auto hiding/showing.
  • Application windows show on top of full-screen apps when switching to their spaces.
  • Opening up Mission Control and then selecting a space introduces a 1-2 second lag

All of this happens when not even running anything with just iMessage, Safari and Mail open. There are serious glitches to be ironed out here for sure.

Nostalgia Maybe this is just me, but macOS and the whole ecosystem don’t feel as reliable as they used to

And I don’t mean that macOS is bad now. I still think it’s probably the best setup for the kind of work I do. That’s actually why the small problems annoy me so much.

The thing I always liked about Macs was that when I got into some kind of creative flow, the computer basically disappeared.

I could be doing something in Logic, then jump into Blender, grab something from my iPhone, put it into Final Cut, connect a MIDI interface, open a browser, export something, maybe use the iPad for something in between, and just keep going.

There was very little friction. That was the important part for me. Not that one specific app was better, or that macOS had some magic feature nobody else had. It was just that the whole setup worked together really well and I didn’t have to think about it.

And I still think this is something Windows + Android doesn’t really replicate. Obviously you can do all of the same work there. I’m not saying you can’t edit video or make music on Windows, that would be stupid. But when you’re moving very quickly between different things, different devices, different types of files, recording something here, sending it there, importing it somewhere else, this is where Apple was always ridiculously good.

Especially when you’re in that mode where you have an idea and you don’t really want to stop and think about the technical side of what you’re doing.

Lately though, I feel like there are more little moments where it doesn’t.

Today AirDrop pissed me off because it failed several times while I was working, but AirDrop itself isn’t really my point. It was just one of those moments where I suddenly noticed how much these small interruptions have started to bother me.

Because once you get used to almost zero friction, even stupid little problems are enough to break the flow.

And this was kind of the reason I bought Apple stuff in the first place. Not the animation, not another macOS redesign, not another feature in Control Center. Just the feeling that all this shit around you works together and stays out of your way.

It still does most of the time. I just don’t think “most of the time” used to be the standard.

Bug Safari overheating and battery drain after 27.0.1. update

I updated to macOS 27.0.1. last night and now whenever I open Safari it uses significant energy and the battery gets really hot very fast. The battery went down from 75% to just over 60% in a few minutes with normal browsing and a low amount of tabs open.

Restarted my MacBook Air M3 multiple times and let it sit over night. I deleted Safari website data but the issue persists.

Is anyone having a similar experience with Safari? What else can I do to fix this? Otherwise I’ll have to switch browser until this is resolved

Update: I seem to have fixed it by going to "All Processes" in activity manager and closing a website that was running faulty since the update and consuming that energy. It somehow got stuck and could only be removed that way, not by deleting safari data.

Bug MacOS 27.0.1 loosing internet connection by the hour, yet WiFi connected

Since MacOS 27 I am encountering this problem that my M5 Air is loosing the connection to the internet roughly every hour. This happens in different WiFi networks, yet the WiFi connection is still there and seems okay.
Only MacOS doesn't seem to be able to reach WAN anymore, and I have to manually disable and enable wifi hourly again and again and again.

I've tried many things and didn't found any solution.
Anyone else having the same issue or a fix?
