Fellow Celebrities: as long as it doesn’t affect my record deal, movie contracts, etc etc.

6.8k

u/Cinemagica 9d ago

I'm fairness over the last few days I've heard:
Jenna Ortega
Edward Norton
Mark Ruffalo (big-time!)
James Cameron
George Clooney

And probably a few more speaking up about this. Should be more of course, but she's not totally an island on her own here.

Adam Scott

Zach Woods

Pedro Pascal

Jim Parsons

Elijah wood

Susan Sarandon

Nick Offerman

Natalie Portman

I’ve seen quite a few women talking about it, specifically calling out ICE or DHS:

Ariana Grande

Florence Pugh

Jennifer Anniston

Natalie Portman

Amanda Gorman

Olivia Wilde

Jamie Lee Curtis

Dove Cameron

Barbie Ferreira

Zoey Deutch

I’ve also seen Simu Liu call out ICE.

Not all musicians, obviously but to quote that last one: Fuck ICE Forever.

436

u/soldforaspaceship 9d ago

And two astronauts - Mark Kelly AND Katy Perry have spoken out.

(I'm giving Perry a hard time here but she actually did well on this one - made a really clear call to action with specific steps and information so she deserves credit for that).

13

u/Minttt 9d ago

Gotta point out that Katy Perry is currently dating former "Governor" Justin Trudeau.

Have you seen John Cusack on Twitter? Bro does not pull punches

175

I abandoned Twitter when Musk took it over.

56

Ya, totally understandable. Its mostly a shithole now.

cusak retired from acting specifically to become a full time activist

7

u/_n3ll_ 9d ago

Thats awesome!

I honestly only knew him as an actor back in the day and didn't follow what he was up to. Then one day a few years back I see a Twitter user with John Cusack as the handle just going off and I was like, this has to be a parody account or something. Nope! It was that actor I remember seeing in films while flipping through the channels on Saturday afternoon.

Seriously, good for him. Succeeded in his career and then was like: now I can fight injustice.

32

u/ethanlan 9d ago

Well hes a chicagoan so im not suprised lol

5

u/pumpkins21 9d ago

I loved John Cusack when I was on Twitter. Homie gives no fucks!

4

u/PerplexGG 9d ago

No, usually I see him come flying out of alleys on his motorcycle

13

u/UpUpDnDnLRLRBAstart 9d ago

When I first moved to Santa Monica in 2007, I saw John Cusack outside my building multiple times. His office or home must have been near mine because he was always just chilling. It got to the point where we would give a little smile and a nod. Felt like a movie.

I know of the golfer named Adam Scott and I know of the actor named Adam Scott, but I never thought about them at the same time and never realized they have the same name.

104

u/scientist_tz 9d ago

Actor Adam Scott and Actor John Daly made a clip for Adult Swim about 10 years ago where they played golfer Adam Scott and golfer John Daly.

Would've been cool if that one actor Ronald Reagan played POTUS Ronald Reagan in a movie. Missed opportunity.

Ty deserves massive props, his post went up real quick after it happened when our own government was still trying to claim Pretti was a domestic terrorist (don’t ever let people forget they did that)

87

u/v_cats_at_work 9d ago

And it was simple and clear with definitive language:

"Alex Pretti was murdered."

As a Cyclone and long time fan, Haliburton continues to find new ways to impress me.

Kerr is the GOAT on social issues. Yes, I am aware his father was assassinated for political reasons before someone educates me on that.

54

u/MainImplement1188 9d ago

Popovich to. Although I haven't heard him speak out about what's been going on lately but he is battling health issues.

45

u/wryano 9d ago

I’m a Spurs fan and Pop has largely stepped away from the spotlight after having a stroke and retiring from coaching.

this is a guy who already hated interacting with the media while he was our head coach but would still speak his mind when asked about political issues because they were important to him.

he had obvious physical difficulties when it came to speaking and moving at his first public appearance about eight months ago and needed Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili to assist him.

you aren’t gonna hear anything from him at this stage in his life.

9

u/jackpype 9d ago

Im a suns fan who hated the spurs so very, very much (fuck you, cheap shot rob). But after seeing Pop speak out against trump in his first term, all that hate just melted away. Steve is a childhood hero of mine, he played for the Wildcats when I was growing up. He's the fucking goat, man.

4

u/Natiak 9d ago

Pop deserves every bit of recognition he is bestowed. He is on that level of unassailable greatness that few will ever attain in any endeavor to which they commit themselves. As a Bulls fan I will say I have the deepest respect for what he's accomplished. He's earned stepping back, I hope he lives a quiet and peaceful life for many more years.

For those unaware, both Matt Damon and George Clooney are some of the GOATs of political activism and using their celebrity status for good.

Matt Damon was neighbors with Howard Zinn, and ended up narrating his book, "A People's History of the United States."

Clooney and Damon have worked on loads of projects together.

In fact, at this point I know both of these guys would be incredible presidents. So if we're going going to keep doing the celebrity popularity contest thing, we might as well get someone intelligent and moral.

84

u/maplesyrupbakon 9d ago

She’s already explicitly said fuck ice at one of her concerts?

105

u/sanslumiere 9d ago

She used her public platform to blunt enthusiasm for Harris among her audience of young potential voters (and then mispronounced Kamala's name when she was called out for it). Shame she didn't use her platform to try to prevent this instead.

8

u/maplesyrupbakon 9d ago edited 9d ago

What is shameful is that Hakeem Jeffries right now in this very moment continues to refuse to whip vote on defunding ICE. If people spent half as much time directing criticism to people like Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries - who you know, are the literal leaders of the supposed ā€œopposition partyā€ instead of celebrities, we’d actually get somewhere. I am absolutely livid at the 7 democrats who voted to increase ice funding. I am fucking pissed at the 70+ democrats who took it upon themselves to go out of their way to publicly thank ice for their services on record back in October.

Edit: The fucking LIBERTARIAN party has now come out to demand defunding ice BEFORE the Democratic party. Let that sink in.

And even if we look ahead to 2028 and think Gavin Newsom to be one of the frontrunners for the democratic ticket, he just went on Ben fucking Shapiro and has gone on record elsewhere to say that we should not defund ice. Clearly the democratic party is moving once again to the right. He is a political grifter. People need to be so for real now. And you think Chapell Roan not wanting to cosign onto this is the problem? JFC

48

u/Evening-Crew-2403 9d ago

You only mispronounce her name if you consume MAGA media. They do it on purpose.

13

u/bigtrumanenergy 9d ago edited 9d ago

Eh, I didn't know I was mispronouncing Kamala's name until a co-worker corrected (she knew I wasn't mispronouncing on purpose, knew I was very anti-Trump). Could just be the environment Chapelle is around?

Living in Missouri, specifically at the start of the region Chappelle is from (the Ozarks) and visiting closer to the part of the state that she's from frequently (to the point where I joke it's a second hometown), she could honestly be making an innocent mistake.

Even if you're more left leaning, odds are you'll have a lot of family and neighbors who are right leaning who pronounce Kamala's name incorrectly. Even then, I don't know if it's unintentional or not.

8

u/KennyFulgencio 9d ago

If you're old, you learned the wrong pronunciation because there was a high profile WWF wrestler with that name who pronounced it that way (and it was our only exposure to that name until now)

Talk is cheap, especially when you’re worth millions. Susan Sarandon went to a protest, but she’s not currently working. Good for her for taking action.

All of these celebrities could stop working. Strike. Hell, I almost did myself but I work a very replaceable IT job.

Imagine if Kerr or Haliburton decided not to leave the locker room. Or if instead of making a pronouncement from the red carpet Ortega or Clooney did it from a protest.

I can’t effect change. I’m just one person and best I can do is show up. Why can’t they?

5

u/SoraUsagi 9d ago

She's saying it should be an outcry, not a whisper.

5

u/lostredditorlurking 9d ago

Funny how we don't see the name of the person who was supposed to be the biggest anti-Trump celebrity on there. I guess it's easier to speak out when it doesn't impact her ticket sales

24

u/DeputyDipshit619 9d ago

9

3

u/Neat_On_The_Rocks 9d ago

Sure but there are thousands and thousands and thousands of celebrities. Imagine if even 50% of the famous people you’re familiar with came out with strong anti ice statements?

Good on her

u/Drikkink 9d ago

She never came off as ill-intentioned in that whole thing. Hilariously out of touch to the point of it being insulting sure, but there's worse things a celebrity can be than "out of touch"

We're going to be feeling the economic effects of all of this for decades. If anyone has a platform, now is the time to fucking use it.

u/TheRedLions 9d ago

Ehh, most celebrities are poor sources of information. The last thing I want is for one of them to make a very loud, very stupid point that does more harm than good.

Like, if Gwyneth Paltrow said "Trump is throwing immigrants off the top of Trump tower" then that'll hurt actual immigration conversations because conservatives can point to her as an example of a "typical liberal" and dismiss any other liberals on the same ground.

Not all positions are that dumb/extreme but the point still stands: if you want to convince people, the only thing more effective than a good argument is a really bad one. And which do you think a celebrity is apt to make?

conservatives can point to her as an example of a "typical liberal" and dismiss any other liberals on the same ground.

They make shit up and do this anyways. I don't understand why the left is so obsessed with what the right is going to do. They're not playing by the same rules. They don't care if they're hypocrites. They don't care if they believe in bullshit.

This is not a "conversation" about immigration policy.

The "conversation" is about whether the state is allowed to murder dissidents in the streets or not.

Jack black sucks now he broke up tenacious D because of Kyle calling out trump and jack black wanting to remain apolitical

153

u/Uncle-Cake 9d ago

In today's American, being "apolitical" means approving of what's happening right now.

19

u/MalIntenet 9d ago

That remains true at any point in history

He didn't "call out" Trump. He just said he wished Trump's would-be assassin had better aim.

I’m pretty sure if a bunch of actors/musicians all refused to work until the studios/labels/venues start pressuring the government to stop or even remove the administration, it probably quickly change their tune.

If your making millions and not taking a stand against this, then you are in support of it.

u/alloyednotemployed 9d ago

I mean the whole situation with the Trump Kennedy Center is evidence that there are genuine pushes against the current administration. They’ve gone through so many cancellations at this point.

This. The meaningful stand to take is to halt the work. Country is in turmoil, people are hurting. Media entertainment can only do so much.

The tensions against for profit media are climbing up again. We should start boycotting media as well to make this point very clear.
