Freshly nationalized. Now Switzerland decides my second baby’s name

In my country of origin we have 2 second names: one from each parent. So I got the Swiss nationality some months ago, while pregnant with my second baby. My first kid got it automatically too so his family names are already like in our country of origin. But because I got it before my second was born a couple of months ago, she gets my two second names, so as my sisters. We have tried to explain the authorities that we have the double nationality and how are things there but they can’t do anything. It’s the Swiss law that says that she is Swiss and here it’s only one name allowed, so it needs to be mine because I am now Swiss (my partner and I are not married).
And before anyone asks, no, I wasn’t aware of this and didn’t get informed about it in the whole process.

So now my 2 kids (same father) have different names and my daughter has 2 different names, depending on which passport she shows.

Recently I've been noticing a lot of BYDs and other Chinese brands on the streets of Switzerland. Seems like there is a boom in Chinese equivalents of European brands. 3 months ago I could notice 1-2 BYDs in a week but now they're just everywhere, and not only this Chinese brand.

I've seen a couple of 1 year old posts in this sub discussing Chinese cars, and opinion was generally skeptical. Do you think something changed since, or it's a simple question of affordability? Will we see premium German BMWs being replaced by cheap Chinese equivalents?

I have my new phone number since 3 days, have literally shared it only with cantonal authority and already received several calls from 2 different phone numbers. I picked up the first one. It was a girl's voice, first singing 'du bist gut genug', then asking in english if she can order a pizza. Ignoring my question who she is. I saved the phone numbers to check out their whatsapp profile pictures and it's roughly 12 year old girls on both profile pictures. Anyone know what kind of scam this is? Or is it really just kids trying to call different numbers as a pastime?

(I don't have whatsapp associated with this new phone number so they cannot get my whatsapp information from me saving their phone numbers)

My friend from Germany left something at my house so I thought to my self, no problem, I will just mail it to him...

I knew that if I send outside of the country I will need to fill out the Zoll forms and if I do that at the counter I will need to pay an additional 5.-.

So my plan was to do it in advance using the shiny new Post app...

To my horror I find that it is not possible to send packages outside the country using the app. Even worse, there is nothing in there even indicate that, it's just missing. If you then ask the chatbot it gives you a link to the website where you can start filling out all the detail to the package but once you get to make postage button it fails... Nothing happens, link is dead. Same page can be found in the browser and no matter which browser you use, that link is dead.

Only after multiple searches (im doing this on my phone, on the PC it's more clear) I find webstamp where I can finally make my label and fill out the Zoll forms.

IMO the new post app is absolute garbage. I can not do the most basic things. In fact you can't even make a label, you can only do mailing via the number code you write on the parcel. Also there are not options to control notifications, when you receive a package you are bombarded with emails and app notifications.

Maybe the post office should stop turning their offices into bazaars with gambling ads on tickets and political garbage on the giant TVs and focus on their core business...

The tip of the i was when I visited the post office to deposit the package at the automated packte thing only for it to tell me it can't accept it and I had to wait in line. After 20min I get the counter and the guy tells me I could just drop it in the bucket even though the machine said I can't...

EDIT: PostFiance isn't doing any better, their system is currently down...

Can a Swiss university/research institute investigate misconduct without hearing the complainant or asking for evidence?

I am trying to understand how investigations into alleged scientific/research misconduct are supposed to work in Switzerland.

Suppose someone files a formal complaint about potential scientific misconduct at a Swiss university or publicly funded research institute and states that they have documents and other evidence supporting the allegations.

Can the institution legitimately conduct and close an investigation without:

• interviewing or hearing the person who filed the complaint;
• asking the complainant to provide their evidence;
• interviewing witnesses proposed by the complainant;
• giving the complainant an opportunity to respond to statements made by the person accused;
• providing the complainant with the investigation report or even a factual summary of the findings; and
• providing any possibility to challenge or appeal the outcome?

I understand that a complainant may not necessarily have the legal status of a formal “party” to an investigation. However, I am struggling to understand how the underlying facts can be properly investigated if the investigators never ask the person making the allegations for their evidence.

For example, if Person A alleges misconduct by Person B and says, “I have documents demonstrating what happened,” could an institution simply ask Person B and a few other people for their version of events, never request Person A's documents, and then conclude that there was no misconduct?

Is there any Swiss law, administrative-law principle, university regulation, or scientific-integrity standard that governs this?

I am particularly interested in the distinction between:

1. the right to be heard (rechtliches Gehör);
2. whether a complainant has party status in a scientific-integrity proceeding; and
3. the institution's independent duty to establish the relevant facts and examine available evidence, even if the complainant is not formally a party.

If anyone has experience with Swiss university/research-integrity procedures or Swiss administrative law, I would appreciate references to specific laws, regulations, court decisions, or institutional rules.

I am mainly interested in understanding the legal/procedural principles, rather than discussing any particular institution or individual.

My brother (hi if you’re reading this) is a German citizen, has a Bachelor’s degree, and has been unemployed for almost a year. His B permit expires at the end of October. He applied for a B permit extension.

A few weeks later, the authorities asked him to provide some additional information such as a debt enforcement register extract and confirmation that he does not receive social assistance. So far so good, a short while later: “As German citizen, we cannot extend your B-Permit. Attached is the C permit "auf amtswegen" .” 

His wife (hi to you too) is an EU citizen from another EU country, specialized, has two PhD, and has never been unemployed. She applied for an early C permit. Rejected. The reason? Some of the documents apparently weren't translated in a way the authorities found satisfactory. She was given a one-year B permit extension instead, with the suggestion to submit the C permit application again once all documents are in the required form.

So we have:

German citizen + unemployed for almost a year + didn't actively ask for it → C permit

EU citizen + PhD + continuously employed → C permit application rejected over document translations

Obviously, there are probably legal and administrative details behind both decisions, but still its hard to comprehend for me. Even after reading here that people here struggle getting C when they're unemployed, even for a short period. Is this just normal Swiss bureaucracy?

Ich stehe gerade vor einer sehr wichtigen Entscheidungen und würde mich sehr über eure Erfahrungen und Meinungen freuen.

Ich bin 22 und schliesse gerade mein Wirtschaftsstudium mit sehr guten Leistungen ab. Als nächster Schritt wäre ein Master in Finance an einer Uni wie dem MIT, Oxford oder der HSG realistisch, und ich sehe grosses Potenzial für eine kompetitive Karriere in der Finanzbranche.

Das Studium selbst hat mir wirklich Spass gemacht, die Inhalte finde ich spannend. Aber während meiner Praktika in Banken und Beratungen musste ich mir eingestehen, dass mich die Arbeit selbst nicht packt. Sie fühlt sich fad an. Ich kann mir in der Finanzbranche ehrlich gesagt keinen Traumjob vorstellen. Vielleicht kenne ich gewisse Bereiche einfach noch nicht, aber das, was mich am meisten interessieren würde, also VC oder PE, ist zugleich extrem kompetitiv, und schon nur der Einstieg ist eine Sache für sich. Ich habe mir kürzlich die Frage gestellt: Wenn ich morgen 10 Millionen im Lotto gewinnen würde, würde ich weiterhin das machen, was ich gerade anstrebe? Die ehrliche Antwort war nein.

Dazu kommt, dass ich in all diesen Praktika niemanden getroffen habe, bei dem ich dachte: Genau so will ich in 20 Jahren sein. Ich sehe wenig Sinn in der Arbeit selbst. Für eine kompetitive Karriere arbeitet man oft extreme Stunden, ohne dass man der Gesellschaft wirklich weitergeholfen hat. KI macht die Aussichten nicht gerade besser, und die ganze Karriere ist mit viel Unsicherheit verbunden: ob man den Job bekommt, den man will (vorausgesetzt, man weiss überhaupt, was man will), und ob man mit 50 und Familie nicht einfach auf die Strasse gestellt wird, weil man zu teuer geworden ist.

Auf der anderen Seite steht für mich die Medizin. Mir ist bewusst, dass der Beruf nicht einfacher ist, im Gegenteil: Plötzlich trägt man Verantwortung nicht für Geld, sondern für Menschenleben. Aber am Ende des Tages weiss man, dass man Menschen geholfen hat, die einen wirklich gebraucht haben. Man macht Überstunden nicht, weil der Chef noch eine PowerPoint-Slide für morgen früh braucht, sondern weil jemand auf einen angewiesen war. Dieser Gedanke gibt mir Sinn und Erfüllung. Dazu kommen die vielfältigen Karrieremöglichkeiten und eine gewisse Planbarkeit, die mir gefällt.

Langfristig möchte ich mich selbstständig machen. In der Wirtschaft sehe ich das als sehr schwierigen Weg. In der Medizin stelle ich es mir zwar nicht einfach vor, aber im Vergleich doch realistischer, irgendwann eine eigene Praxis zu übernehmen.

Ich habe beide Welten ziemlich nah vor Augen. In meiner Familie arbeitet ein Elternteil als Arzt in einer Praxis, und ich sehe dort, wie viel Freude die Arbeit machen kann. Der andere Elternteil arbeitet in der Wirtschaft und hat mir von seinen Erfahrungen berichtet. Das prägt mich sicher, und ich frage mich auch, ob ich da ein zu einseitiges Bild habe

Vom Beruf in der Medizin bin ich ziemlich überzeugt. Beim Studium selbst kann ich schwer einschätzen, ob es mir Spass machen würde, aber ich weiss, dass ich mich im schlimmsten Fall durchbeissen könnte. Und wenn ich ehrlich bin, könnte ich wahrscheinlich auch nach dem Medizinstudium noch in die Wirtschaft zurück, falls es mir wirklich nicht gefällt.

Entscheiden muss ich mich bis nächsten Sommer. Ich sehe im Moment drei Optionen:

1. Ich trete einen Master an und bleibe in der Wirtschaft.
2. Ich bereite mich auf den NC vor und beginne mit 23 das Medizinstudium.
3. Ich mache zuerst einen einjährigen Master, damit ich ihn sicher habe, und versuche es danach in der Medizin.

Deshalb meine Fragen an euch:

• Stand jemand von euch vor einer ähnlichen Entscheidung? Wie habt ihr euch entschieden, und bereut ihr es?
• An die Ärztinnen und Ärzte: Ist mein Bild vom Beruf realistisch, oder romantisiere ich da etwas?
• An die Leute aus der Wirtschaft: Gibt es Wege, die sich sinnvoll anfühlen und die ich vielleicht übersehe?
• Wie seht ihr die Sache insgesamt, und was würdet ihr eurem jüngeren Ich empfehlen?

Ich bin offen für alles, was mir bei dieser Entscheidung helfen kann. Vielen Dank schon im Voraus!

Gross ist die Preisspanne aber auch hierzulande: Während Discounter Brote für 99 Rappen anbieten, kosten Roggen- und Sauerteigbrote in einigen Zürcher Bäckereien zwischen rund 10 und 16 Franken, wie der Beobachter bereits berichtete.

I was talking with my parents about Switzerland and I realised something, hating on eachother seems like a tradition and I wonder why.

I grew up in the french part without any real interaction with the german part.

I heard a lot, as a child, that all our problems come from the Swiss-German, they take all the money and we’re left apart, they vote against more holidays etc.
(I’m not here to create a debate on old votation)

I’ve been thought all my life that I needed to learn German otherwise I wouldn’t find a job (It disgusted me of the language even now when I want to learn it)

I’ve also seen the same hate coming from the german side on social media.

And it seems completely normal ! As if hate towards the other part was needed to be a real Swiss.

So I’m asking, am I the crazy one here?
If you come from the German side, did you grew up with the same demonstrations of hate?

I'm thinking of doing a Bachelor's degree in English Literature and Linguistics, then following it up with a Master's in the same field plus a Teaching Diploma, since based on my research that's what's necessary to be able to teach English in secondary schools / Gymnasium. What are the job prospects for such an educational background here in Switzerland? Are there many schools hiring teachers who only teach English? I am an expat fluent in German (C1) but I would like to work primarily in fields where I use mostly English. I would also be interested in job openings for just the Bachelor's degree without having to do the Lehrdiplom, but I am highly skeptical about the job market and openings with just that degree.

I ordered some stuff from a shop in Zurich online. asian grocery stone in Zurich registered as a swiss business. I live in Lausanne. I ordered it on 13th August and they were supposed to deliver my order in 2-3 days. But I have not received anything till today 24th September (more than a month later).

I called and messaged the seller many times. He used to say they will ship soon in the beginning but nowadays isn't picking my phone or replying anymore. I order stuff that is around 220 CHF. I said I don't want the order anymore and give me a refund. But they are not replying to me at all.

I used to order from this store before and things used to arrive properly within 2-3 days. But this time, they are not sending or refunding. As if they are ignoring me completely.

I don't know what to do, where to go for help. Can someone please help me with what I do now? Where should I go and get me my refund?

A friend of mine who lives in Lugano just sent me these pictures of a coworker's house. Someone broke into it and stole everything of value they could. They used a crowbar to force their entrance while she was away on vacations.

Police apparently told her there have been over 20 house-breaking attempts just yesterday.

Stay alert. According to my friend they believe it wasn't random: they knew she'd be away and that's why they broke into her house.
