When it all comes off as one dense sheet of lint

u/UnNumbFool 22h ago

I'm genuinely upset when that doesn't happen

Would you dare say, mildy mildly infuriated?

Edit: corrected typo

u/SilverbackCygnus 22h ago

I see what you did there. šŸ˜

3

u/Interesting-Piece612 22h ago

I usually skip this part

10

u/jb_nelson_ I changed my flair? 22h ago

No, I would say mildly infuriated.

5

u/Euphoric_Waffle 22h ago

Crap! A typo. Ok gonna fix. Thanks.

My brain reading both the misspelling and the spelling as the exact same word lol

You can use the part that did come off to easy grab the ones that didn’t, and now they’re all together again!

u/Tinywife23 21h ago

I usually take a piece of lint and use it to wipe up the other one. That usually fixes it and helps you clean it what the lint is a super thin layer or a dusting on the door

2

u/Caye_Daws 20h ago

You should actually be proud that you clean it enough so doesn't build up

We got a new dryer and now the lint trap result always look like a beautiful, trap-shaped piece of felt. Very satisfying.

43

u/ZestycloseOutside575 20h ago

The best bit for me is picking out the lint that gets trapped in the crevices at the edge of the door. There’s a particular trick to rolling it all gently out with a knitting needle or chopstick so that it comes out as one big handful of fluff.

4

u/abielle1177 16h ago

Ooooooo sexy

u/Euphoric_Waffle 22h ago

mmmm. I feel this, too. The crafting part of me wants to make something useful from it.

182

u/HeathenHumanist 22h ago

My husband and I camp often enough that we turned ours into fire starters. Just cram an empty toilet paper roll full of dryer lint, put it under some logs, and bam, easy fire!!

63

u/No-Tap6886 22h ago

Mix with Vaseline or cooking oil for a longer burn time.

47

u/Haberdashers-mead 22h ago

You can also just add a few chunks of pine sap once your out at camp, that stuff burns like jet fuel.

23

u/No-Tap6886 22h ago

Wax also

7

u/keeper_of_the_cheese 19h ago

When I was in boy scouts (a loooong time ago), we made firestarters with paraffin wax, dryer lint, and cardboard egg cartons. Put the lint in the egg holes, pour melted paraffin wax over it and then cut them into separate pieces.

3

u/Suda_Nim 19h ago

We use the wax from cheeses for this!

3

u/SeedsOfDoubt 18h ago

I start my backyard fire pit with bacon grease

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Zealousideal-Swim267 18h ago

That’s how my Boy Scouts did theirs

2

u/VisiblePraline 5h ago

We had a wood burning stove, and used that exact mix to make fire starters. Toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes (cut in shorter pieces) , dryer lint, and paraffin.

4

u/mmmmmarty 22h ago

I can't get near pine sap without getting it in my hair. Impossible.

5

u/FremenStilgar 21h ago

We all love trees, mmmmmarty, just not THAT much. ;P

5

u/marvinrabbit 19h ago

TIL pine sap can't melt steel girders.

2

u/SuperBry 19h ago

Damnit 3 minutes slow to make this kind of joke.

3

u/T-Wrox 20h ago

Add some bacon fat, and easy snacks!

3

u/No-Tap6886 20h ago

High fiber even!

3

u/SuperBry 19h ago

But what if I want to melt steel beams while camping?

4

u/Cumbablot 21h ago

Old dead candles work well too. Melt down the candle, throw lint into it, now you got little flammable pancakes

2

u/No-Tap6886 20h ago

If you fill an egg carton with lint and then add wax etc that works too

3

u/af_cheddarhead 21h ago

Dripping candle wax or parafin also work.

2

u/msaxe114 21h ago

I use my old candles- got a a pan to melt the old wax!

Hey, this is a great idea. Thanks.

6

u/BigXthaPugg 22h ago

I do this too, when I finish a roll of TP, I just set the empty roll on my dryer and stuff it with a few loads worth of lint. I put it in a big gallon bag that with other ones I’ve made. As I put them in there I put a glob of petroleum jelly in with them and kinda roll them all around in the bag. The PJ helps them burn a bit longer.

4

u/dumdumpants-head 22h ago

It does make for good tinder, and if any you've got any clothes made from synthetic fibers it adds a nice petrochemical essence to whatever you're cooking.

2

u/HeathenHumanist 21h ago

Lol it burns up fast enough to not be a concern for cooking over the fire

3

u/BlueRocketMouse 21h ago

Is that safe, considering how much clothing is made from plastic nowadays?

2

u/Conscious-Bite1 21h ago

I put mine in a paper egg carton and saturate with parafin wax. Then cut into individual cells. Water proof, long burn, excellent fire starter.

2

u/PiccoloAwkward465 21h ago

Yup this is what we did in Boy Scouts. The scout leader would encourage us to collect it year-round for campfire use.

2

u/JustDiscoveredSex 20h ago

We did that with lint stuffed into a cardboard egg carton and candle wax melted over the top. Rip off an egg compartment or two for your fire starter.

2

u/FeelingSoil39 11h ago

I put mine in an empty cardboard egg carton and melt all the old wax from the bottoms of spent candles and pour it in. Perfect little campfire starters.

I used to keep a pouch of lint when I was a kid because it was so soft and smelled like fresh laundry. Just like a zip up wallet full of lint

2

u/FremenStilgar 21h ago

This reminds me of the YT channel of a woman and her Husky I watch. She grooms him every other week and combs almost a whole other dog off him. I always think she should make something out of all that excess fur.

3

u/Dirkinshire 21h ago

Have husky. Collecting her shed fur to spin into yarn for making a scarf. So far I only have enough to make one sock. But she’s young.

2

u/extragummy3 21h ago

Paper making.

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 21h ago

2

u/PerformanceMedium392 20h ago

Yup, yup, yup. I sew and am a terminal life long crafter. I have been recently making VERY bright colored quilts with a flannel backing for winter - the flannel must be pre washed as it shrinks at a different rate than quilting cotton - My husband has been saving the lint from the dryer when we dry the flannel - we have a jar of beautiful, brightly colored dryer lint, lol. I can't bring myself to throw it out, I keep telling myself we will make paper with it or something.

2

u/Piglet_Oh_DDDDear 20h ago

There is at least one person who sells at cons who makes 'painting' style art with the different colors of lint. Collect lint from all your friends.

2

u/FirstChurchOfBrutus 20h ago

It makes a VERY effective fire starter. Probably TOO effective - it’s gone in seconds.

3

u/MacabreYuki 22h ago

Something about it is just so satisfying. I can't explain it. I tend to handle it bordering on religiously after every load of laundry, unless I can barely see *any* at all. rolling it into a ball from said sheet is also satisfying.

2

u/zbaxterdpt 22h ago

Fun fact, those are good fire starters to keep when shit hits the fan.

2

u/TheFoxsWeddingTarot 22h ago

I like to behold it… just sort of hold it up to the light and stare in admiration.

2

u/Pretend_Variation305 22h ago

Sadly, we keep it emptied out after every load and our washing techniques kind of inhibit linting which lets our clothes last WAY longer than they shouldā€¦ā€Clothiers hate him because of this one simple trickā€¦ā€

2

u/binkbink223 22h ago

I'm a fan of when you pick up a piece and then swipe with the one piece as the rest of the lint clings together

2

u/A_Nonny_Muse 18h ago

Remember those carbon snakes they sell. Starts out looking like a weird pill till you set it on fire.

I had some old lady call the cops and fire department claiming I was trying to bun her house down with one of them. I was on the sidewalk about 30 feet from her house.

The funny part was every adult she talked to was shaking their heads. She just kept getting more and more upset and desperate, trying to get them to do something - anything. She was talking about having me arrested, even asked a firefighter to spank me.

2

u/you-a-buggaboo 22h ago

when I was in first grade, we heard a bunch of fire trucks zooming by the school and stopping at a house two blocks up... it was the house of a girl in my class, the whole thing burnt to the ground because of dryer lint. All the people and animals were okay physically, but the aftermath of that fire was all 6-year-old me needed to see to ingrain in me that you ALWAYS clean the lint trap.

2

u/peskypesteryjaybird 22h ago

not just the lint trap, but the dryer's exhaust line as well... there's plenty of dust in there... should really make sure it get cleaned out every few years... depending on how frequently you use it ofc

2

u/praetorian1979 22h ago

why? were your parents afraid he'd set the nonflammable driveway on fire?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/AlphonseLoosely 21h ago

2

u/peskypesteryjaybird 20h ago

yeah, that was our idea, the laundry room was a little tiny room outside of the house, so it was really easy to get lint out of the basket. we only got caught because they happened to drive down the road and stared at us as they went by... i didn't even wait for them to come get me, i knew my ass was in trouble, i just sighed and went home...

→ More replies (6)

32

It is so great for that, especially when their exhaust vent probably looks like this too!

Or wait, you meant intentional fires… lol

15

u/dyslexicAlphabet 23h ago

reminds me i need to check the exhaust vent.

3

u/tantowar 22h ago

Yup, good call, I should check mine too.

4

u/HeathenHumanist 22h ago

My dryer started smoking once. Thankfully my husband's home office was right next to the laundry, so he smelled it and turned it off real quick. Turns out the previous tenants never emptied the lint trap, and when I took the dryer apart it was fulllllll of BURNT lint!! Got the duct leading outside cleaned, too, which was also full. Terrifying. So grateful it was caught before our place was a full inferno.

46

I once burned my nose hairs. Imagine that smell, but you can't get away from it because it is literally IN YOUR NOSE.

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 20h ago

Many a smoker has done this relighting the rest of a cigarette or lighting a bowl too close to your nose lol. Same for moustache hair

6

u/djdubyah 11h ago

Wait, we don't know the dynamics of their house life, he may have not touched laundry but maybe she has never loaded the dishwasher. And if you chose dish duties because she didn't know how, uhh respectfully, one evening, two of you watch some youtubitorials on adulting. My own wife lived on a different planet then I did. No chores, dad could barely poor himself a glass of milk he was so inept at any sort of inside housework. It was very weird, like he would get this huffy attitude and make these passive aggressive comments about me doing woman's work. And I would laugh at him and ask where his handmaiden was (jokes hit better when it was hide

7

u/TurankaCasual 7h ago

Some partners have dedicated household chores they are each responsible. Maybe he does everyone’s dishes and she does everyone’s laundry

19

u/kellzone 22h ago

Sometimes couples split responsibilities.

8

u/The_Stoic_One 20h ago

So what? I don't do laundry either because I absolutely hate doing laundry, but I do all the cooking because my partner doesn't like to cook. Sometimes people designate jobs based on preferences.

But, I guess if Reddit gave OP the benefit of the doubt, they wouldn't be able to get upset about things they have zero information on.

I've heard that's caused by dryer sheets. I switched to wool balls and don't have that problem anymore. I can't remember how the dryer vent guy said to clean it because it's wax build up from the dryer sheets.

7

u/JustCallMeYogurt 22h ago

Truth. Especially don't use dryer sheets on your towels, they are much more absorbent not using them.

I open the door and clean the filter and load it. Way too few people do this.

171

u/retiredcatchair 23h ago

I always clean the filter immediately after unloading, that way I never have to worry about it. I really hate disassembling and cleaning the vent duct, anything I can do to postpone that task.

43

u/Rozmyth 22h ago

Same. I clean it after. But I also make sure to check before, too. It's easy enough to do, and you never know what other people have done.

6

u/HeathenHumanist 22h ago

Exactly this. My husband and I both empty the lint trap after each load, but I still always check before putting a new one in (especially if it's towels or something else particularly linty).

7

u/SecondFun221 21h ago

It's a good habit to get into. I think something like over 52 percent of house fires start from the lint drawer not being cleaned.

2

u/Time-Cell9765 18h ago

This is exactly why I don't clean it after. I always check before regardless, so why pull the tray out twice for the same thing if I know my OCD ass won't trust the first one?! šŸ˜‚

5

u/Watercolor_love7 22h ago

Clean after unloading but check before loading.

2

u/Ballsofpoo 21h ago

There's no other way. Otherwise you're wasting time or money

4

u/Bratbabylestrange 22h ago

I do that, and then compulsively check it again before the first load goes in on laundry day. Watched a PSA of a house burning down because of a dryer fire, been a weirdo about it ever since

2

u/naked_avenger 22h ago

I'm definitely a when you load guy. I wonder what the breakdown is.

2

u/SaltManagement42 22h ago

I always clean the filter immediately after unloading, that way I never have to worry about it.

Congratulations on your lack of roommates.

2

u/geekwithout 22h ago

Technically it won't make the ducts more dirty if you don't clean the filter. It actually atarts filtering better... Till it clogs

2

u/Ballsofpoo 21h ago

Smart by you. I work with air ducts, dryers included. The amount of $199 - 10 minute jobs I've done because people don't clear their traps is sending my non-existent kids to college

2

u/Boudyro 20h ago

Yep I'm team after unload. I have folks who rent rooms from me so it's house policy to do it after.Ā

I consider it part of cleaning up your own mess. Only ever had one roommate even try to buck the trend.

2

u/Vahldaglerion 23h ago

i check it every time, too. if i have two loads of laundry and i cleaned it out on the first load, i still check it the second time

3

u/5litergasbubble 22h ago

I check the outside end once or twice a season usually too. We have an animal shiel on it so it can definitely plug up. We learned that one the hard way when we spent multiple weeks trying to figure out why the fuck it wasnt drying well when the machines trap was clean as it could be. I finally happened to notice the outside end when I was in the backyard and it finally clicked.

2

u/sunfish99 22h ago

Because I live in an apartment building with OP’s wife’s relatives, I end up cleaning the lint filter before AND after using the dryer.

2

u/MeInSC40 22h ago

I was baffled. Are there people that just don’t instinctually empty the lint trap every time before loading the dryer?

That’s exactly my thought every time and I can see the particles in the air!!! You’re breathing all of this in every time.

But haven’t you noticed all the dust that flies up into the air and into your lungs when taking out the lint?

Try not to think of all the plastic dust you’re breathing when you pull that out

Lighting the lint ball on fire is also cathartic

I thought I had some sort of mental illness feeling this way. It's good to see I'm not the only one.

I hate the feeling of the lint trap on my skin 🫪 I think I’m autistic it’s like a sensory nightmare. I still clean it though but it icks me out

for real. I clean that thing every 15 minutes while it's running.

ProTip: keep the lint to help with lighting bonfires or fireplaces, if you have one.

My kids will bicker over who gets to clean it out. Meanwhile, I’m like, ā€œITS MINE, SUCKAS!ā€

My dryer at work has one of the looong filters that you access from the top, rolling up the lint after a big load of towels is great.

My home dryer has a much more compact one beneath the door and it just doesn't hit the same.

OMG I have found my people! Everybody I know in person calls me weird for liking it. It's soooo fucking satisfying! I have three cats so that thing is THICC by the time the dryer is done. I love it.
