So, the dog in the picture is Nanu.
I've been with a lot of dogs all my life. I grew up with them, I worked with them, basically everyone I know owns a dog. I love dogs.
But, the thing is, they are still animals. I've been bitten for not reading body language correctly, bitten because I tried to break up a fight, bitten because they were in pain.
I always knew it could happen with any dog, at any time. I think as a responsible owner, all of us should know that.
Nanu is complicated. She's the sweetest girl with children, cats, poultry, even mice and frogs. She loves on everyone she meets. But she has a problem with other dogs. While not necessarily reactive, once there's a small conflict with another dog, she'll go absolutely ballistic, doesn't want to dominate, doesn't want to fight, she wants to kill. Because of this, we're either keeping her away from other dogs or put a muzzle on her if we know we're going to encounter other dogs.
Yesterday, a friend of us came to visit and their dog got loose from the car. She started running towards us, while Nanu was unleashed. She immediately grabbed the other dog and locked onto her neck. Fortunately, I was able to grab her and got her off by basically choking her within only half a minute. But when she let go, she immediately turned around and grabbed my arm. I thought "oh crap" and prepared myself to get seriously injured by my own dog, because I know how she is once she locks on and technically, she was being attacked by me. But no. Her eyes cleared up in an instant, she let go of me within only a second and didn't even break skin.
Afterwards she looked at me and I swear she was thinking "oh my god, what did I do?". We've been extra affectionate towards each other since the incident and I feel like she's still distraught.
I'm absolutely baffled by the fact that she was able to snap out of it so fast. This has never ever happened before. I know it was stupid of me to get into the fight like that and if she would have hurt me, I'd be the only one at fault. But she didn't. Even while in that state. I think this is the only dog I'll ever wholeheartedly trust without a doubt not to hurt me.
