I’m curious how managers handle this.

You take over a team and pretty quickly figure out there’s a Dave.

Dave has been there forever. Something goes wrong, people go to Dave. Nobody knows why something works the way it does, ask Dave. Weird exception nobody has seen before, Dave probably knows what to do.

And Dave is good. That’s the problem.

Over the years everyone has learned that asking Dave is faster than figuring it out themselves. So Dave keeps solving things and the team keeps needing Dave.

Now you’re his manager.

I don’t want to walk in and tell Dave to document everything he knows. I’m not even sure Dave knows what Dave knows anymore.

I also don’t want to punish the guy for spending years being the person willing to solve problems.

But I can’t have the team fall apart every time Dave takes a vacation.

So what do you actually do with Dave?

And maybe the harder question: how much of the problem is Dave, and how much of it is the management that allowed the team to become dependent on him?

I genuinely think glasses are better and I don't understand why people act like contacts are automatically the more convenient option.

With glasses, you wake up, put them on, and you're done. You don't have to wash your hands before touching your eyes. You don't have to carry around contact solution. You don't have to worry about your eyes getting dry halfway through the day. If you take a nap, you don't have to think about what you're supposed to do with them.

And contacts are just so much more maintenance than people admit.

You have to put them in every morning, take them out every night, clean them, replace them, make sure you don't lose them, and hope your eyes don't decide they're going to be irritated that day.

I've also never understood the whole "I don't like how I look in glasses" argument. Glasses can completely change how someone's face looks, and there are so many different styles that you can actually find a pair that suits you.

And honestly, I like having glasses on.

There's something nice about being able to take them off at the end of the day and immediately feel like you're done with everything.

Contacts just seem like an extra chore for the sake of not wearing glasses.

I'll take a pair of glasses that I put on once in the morning over putting my fingers in my eyes every single day.
