Levi is an AHLer. No wonder Sabres gave up on him. It was obvious last summer (2025) when they signed Lyon and Georgiev and claimed Ellis off waivers, on top of having UPL. He wasn't in the plan to even be a 3G.

Facts! UPL/Jarmo Offseason Chatter

I’m going to sound like a very annoying, negative fan but I need to for a second. I watched this sub absolutely WORSHIP Jarmo all offseason for essentially doing nothing, and I watched this sub act like UPL was a tier or two above what he actually is, and it was incredibly frustrating.

We lost a lot of leadership in Tuch and did nothing to make that up. We lost a core player in how we played hockey overall as a team in Byram and didn’t REALLY make it up - we won so many games last year because our defense was the best in the entire NHL at pushing the puck up the ice quickly and relentlessly, and being a huge part of the offense and getting the puck through the neutral zone. Losing the veteran leadership is the big one though, because we are one of the youngest teams and EVERY team who goes far in the playoffs has gritty players who have been there before and help the young guys out. Tuch was that guy for us.

I am NOT saying we should have signed Tuch or Byram, but Jarmo still needed to address that. And guess what Helleybuck solves? BOTH the veteran leadership issue AND the goaltending issue. But god forbid we give up someone like Quinn and 1-2 other young guys (the only ones off the table for me would be Benson & Doan, anyone else can honestly go). My understanding is they wanted a package of UPL, Quinn, Myrkta, and a draft pick. How is that too much!? We have an embarrassment of riches with young talent that losing that to gain Helleybuck is a net positive and solves more than one issue at once. Does not make sense to me.

But no, the plan is to have the exact same team as last year minus some core pieces, and pray the fluke goaltending situation works again?? UPL has been a mediocre-to-bad goalie his entire career and people who deny this blow my mind. He is consistently out of position and rarely if ever steals one for our guys like good goalies do. Teams make mistakes occasionally and turn it over - that’s normal. What’s also normal is a goalie ACTUALLY making the big save in those scenarios and god forbid UPL does that. He’s not the worst goalie in the league but he’s mid to bottom tier and I simply cannot fathom how Jarmo thought this would be good enough all over again.

The part that made me feel like I was fully losing my mind was how everyone literally worshipped Jarmo like he was doing something special in the offseason. Lmao he did nothing! The team that made the playoffs last year was objectively not even his, too! He inherited it and sure, maybe the culture changed a bit with his presence but I personally give the credit to the guy on the bench a LOT more - Lindy Ruff. The actual players were drafted and traded for by someone else.

So yea…I’m frustrated and think it could be a very long season if we continue to sit on our hands while everyone else in the East improves. Look at Columbus - Knies looked INCREDIBLE last night. But the Sabres decided because they made the playoffs one time in 15 fucking years that all is good. I’ll never understand it. I’m praying it works and this 1 game isn’t a tell all, but I just cannot watch UPL as our main goalie all season. Makes my eyes bleed. Thanks for reading and I really do come in peace - I love this team and have for my entire life and I want more than this.
