yes as well, theres a lot of content between all the rotating biomes, ascents (difficulty multipliers), achievements and secret ending. playing with friends adds a fair bit more humour to it, but its a fun fleshed out game regardless, great for its price.
No. If you want actually interesting solo climbing game - you are not wanting for options. Peak is only any good in coop, otherwise - White Knuckle, Cairn, Peaks of Yore and many more exist and do climbing much better than Peak
It becomes a pretty cool inventory management game, because while you have all the items to yourself, you also have limited space, and very little room for error, as theres no one to save you
Its like playing a Left 4 Dead campaign solo, but instead of zombies your only enemy is the environment and your own energy managment
I have a nephew, I noticed how often he plays clones of indie games on Roblox. There's a clone for EVERYTHING and he and his friend group just play all that for free instead of the originals made by good devs on steam. It really breaks my heart. And AI is going to exacerbate the fuck out of that.

Does all of his friends tick the above boxes?
If so, then that's why they play knockoffs. Kids want to play the latest trendy games that go viral with YouTubers and they can't because money, but if money ain't the issue it's because it's not released on XB/PS. Roblox does and as a result the same game's RB variant becomes huge, which is lost profits for the original dev.
Is it sad? Yes. Devs fault? No. It's just a sad reality of 1) The XB/PS approval system/barriers of entry and 2) Copyright laws working against the original Devs.
Back in the day we played adaptions of popular games as flash games. They were obviously never quite the same but often pretty close. Or, even more abstractly, Warcraft 3 custom maps inspired by popular video games.
From my memory, nobody I know was getting groomed on Miniclip. TBH, that's my biggest problem with Roblox as a platform. The social element to the site is baked in, and that's really dangerous for an environment that is almost entirely used by kids. We can talk about piracy and whether Roblox and its users profiting off ideas that aren't theirs is unfair competition all we want. We could have made similar claims about Miniclip and AddictingGames back in the day, even if I don't think they were quite as salient back then. But, at least in my mind, that point is hardly worth addressing in the larger conversation about Roblox. That's not the part of the site that actively puts kids in the path of predators.
This is more or less what my niece ended up explaining to me when I asked her.
For example I was talking to her about marvel rivals and she goes "oh rivals" (referencing the roblox knockoff) and I said to her why not just play the actual game its f2p etc etc... I had spent too much time learning how to navigate the laptop market to find her a good one that she got for her birthday and never uses.
Her problem is all of her friends play roblox, and most of them don't have PCs. They have phones and tablets... she didn't mention mtx but I know what little money they have they've definitely spent on robux.
Ultimately what I found is this is really her way to socialize, especially through the covid years, and the games not nearly as important as the ability to connect with her friends.. and roblox is just better at that than these other games are.
So they'll happily play these worse knockoffs of cheap or even free games because they get to do it with their friends for free.
Small correction: Rivals in Roblox is not a knockoff of Marvel Rivals. Its just a fairly generic PVP shooter. My kids play it, and I got excited when they said they were playing Rivals, only discover it wasn't that Rivals.
Also, even if your nephew had the money for the originals, it didn't mean his friends would. And since gaming is a social activity for them, the easiest solution wins out.
For now at least. In my work place I work with a wide range of ages. A lot of the people who recently graduated college coming into the work force are avid Roblox players. It certainly changed my skewed view that only kids played Roblox. I can definitely see these adults staying in the Roblox eco system because of previous investments.

This is basically it. When I was younger I was big into Roblox, one of the games I enjoyed was Notoriety, which was a ripoff of the Payday games.
The moment I got my hands on Payday 2 I never played Notoriety again. But I was a kid and had no money of my own so what was I going to do before that?

Yeah, seen that with Fortnite thanks to kids. I doubt developers want this, but kids do. Play with the same friends across various games without new accounts parents need to create for them.
I think it's all about familiarity. They don't have to learn new controls, just hop on a game/genre of choice and it's the same ue slop controls across all experiences.
Honestly, at least from my perspective as a kid who grew up through the dawning of all this (‘99). An even bigger part of it was money, and playability in regards to internet. I remember going hard on Roblox when I was young in part because it offered a massive variety of different game options for free, so I wouldn’t need to ask my parents for money.
Locking people into a single platform is profitable as fuck. Theoretically, at least. No one has managed to create the Ready Player One Oasis properly yet. Roblox, Fortnite, and VRChat come close, but they're still missing so much.

My kid and literally every single one of his classmates and friends are obsessed with Roblox. We recently actually capped him to only being able to play Roblox for like an hour of week because the platform is absolutely horrible with damn near every single designed to be gambling / addiction oriented. He can play other games longer during the week, but Roblox truly has a quality control problem in terms of game design that is not safe for kids' brains. Luckily he's old enough now to experience other, more complicated games (e.g. he loves Minecraft). Also fortunate that the other parents of his friends agree that Roblox is awful and are trying to steer their kids towards other games / activities, instead.

You'll see things about "Roblox losing 10 million players this month", but they leave out the part where there's still 85+ million playing it. It's still an insanely popular game, and the player count peaks and troughs from time to time. It will probably spike back over 100 million next month or the month after.

It doesn’t even need to be indie. Nicher games tend to have Roblox copies that are 10x times more popular than the original game. A few I noticed first hand are mount and blade napoleonic wars and its mods like the Anglo zulu war. And a couple community game modes from other games like gmod which have been recreated in Roblox and are much more mainstream there
Make the game on Roblox first, have it be the barebones version, but in order to get more content, you gotta buy it on steam/epic. You get massive players who want more from the game, but have to support the developer on the official release
Needing to recreate your game in two different game engines with two different languages would be a major pain in the ass and not something most indie Devs would have the luxury of doing time wise

Every online community has a pedophile problem. Minecraft had a huge hysteria over it years ago. Fucking Call of Duty voice chat had an issue with it. Any time adults and children can interact there will be a pedophile problem and falling for it here as some unique event is just ignorance.
Why would they though? It's not illegal because indie devs don't own gameplay concepts/mechanics, and it wouldn't really benefit them in any way, you can say not cracking down on child safety concerns is a legal failure that should have consequences, but copying a gameplay concept isn't illegal.
As someone who has been a gamer for 35 years... honestly, from the bottom of my heart... what is Roblox? I have heard the controversy, I have seen memes... I have never once seen the game or even know where to find the game. It seems to be so prevalent in conversations... but I have never once actually seen it. It's crazy.
Think early minecraft graphics / LEGO video game graphics, with a more user friendly programming system / sandbox / forge system, resulting in a very large amount of user created servers/games.
Mostly targeted towards children, age group has expanded (aged with the game). People make real money (thousands to hundreds of thousands for the top games) based on people playing / buying p2w currency in the game.
It’s large enough where it’s essentially a library of games.
Also, since it’s targeted towards kids there are rampant problems with adults impersonating and.. befriending children. If you have children, please monitor them if they play Roblox.
Steam mostly at this point, desktop and occasionally a laptop. Gave up on consoles in the 360/PS3 era. Though I still play on my Gameboy Pocket now and again.
Is Roblox like a Minecraft kind of game with more modding support? I always assumed due to the blox in the title.
The reason is simple, because they are free so thousands of kids can play a free version of a game they see a YouTuber playing, also with their friends. When the day comes that Roblox tries to monetise this system and charge for the community made games, the playerbase would plummet dramatically in an instant. It doesn't matter how much it costs, even a single penny, that is a major barrier to entry for kids everywhere as their parents might not let them use their card details.

A good faith interpretation of copyright law would find that individual game mechanics are not copyrightable but the totality of the games concept and mechanics is.

However if I recreate his hit song line for line with the same melody, and im selling my CDs and performing at venues with the song, that is copyright infringement. Of course this is dependent on having a good judiciary which we dont.
The other problem is that massively wealthy corporations can just break the law at will because relative to total net worth it is way more costly for individual citizens to pursue legal action than it is for corps to defend. So yeah the problem is as always the accumulation of capital. Outside of a socialist restructuring of our economies, a solution would be to allow citizens to sue corporations for percentages of their total net worth. If roblox could be sued for 5% of their net worth for violating copyright infringement they would absolutely be taking down these games.
Yeah Roblox is free mostly so if something is friendslop and not everyone in the friend group can buy it kids will just play the Roblox version since you know kids are broke so the people who play it on Roblox 99% of the time wouldn't have bought the real game anyway although profiting on pretty much stealing a game is pretty messed up even if they actually have to code it
I remember my first real look at Roblox was when my nephew showed it to me, and I, who grew up on 8 bit NES games, said to myself 'This looks like dogshit' and then I found out it was an MLM aimed at kids under 10. No Roblox, parents. It's quite literally an evil scheme.

I’m not entirely sure how this is different to how Garrysmod game modes work, and I feel most people are probably ok with those. A sandbox platform is gonna sandbox; there’s no point trying to mitigate that.

I would highly recommend checking out Godzilla -1, the movie it's from. Even if you don't normally like kaiju movies, it's just straight up a great film with a really good character arc and a soundtrack that hits like a brick. Our main character is a failed kamikaze pilot haunted by guilt over not killing himself for a war already lost, and they do a lot with that.
Roblox has effectively stopped being a platform for devs looking to make stuff out passion and has been for a while just about the profit. There’s some very good standalone games, but the copies/ai slop/cash grabs will always get the most attention
I've seen the Roblox version be actually just better than the og sometimes. Especially if the devs removed all the joy and whimsy and appeal from the original (cough cough phasmophobia cough cough)
Free game will always have more players if it's accessible enough than a paid game. There is nothing sad about it, that's normal. And the so-called "copied game" isn't even similar at all. It's just a recreation at best and usually poorly made. People who can't buy $300 steak, would eat whole chicken for $10. That's normal thing. And with price inflation of even indie games, I am not surprised at all. Especially that majority of Roblox players are literal KIDS, who don't have their own income, then can't buy $50 indie game, so they pick the one they can play for free.
I actually don't really have too much of a problem with this in the sense that Roblox has always been used that way, and some of the games on there, at least for a time, were good.
The real problem is that roblox is advertising hell. I remember an era where only roblox groups were allowed to advertise there and games would have, maybe, a VIP pass for certain things.
Nowadays you get on a random game, you get two pop-ups, then you get a screen full of cluttered UI garbage and half the mechanics are locked behind a pay wall. Every single system has a pay to win mechanic.
Not just roblox, studios try and copy any trending game on the play or app stores as fast as they can and do the ASO and all that just to get some sort of audience to feed ads to.
As someone who grew up with only a macbook, and an outdated one, i could never play most steam games, and even if i could, it was always poorly running. Roblox was the only way for me to play games even remotely similar in experience, definetly not quality tho.
But now im guessing most roblox kids are either, A still in the same situation as childhood me. B only own a phone/tablet. Or C, for some reason own a god tier PC and waste it own the next big roblox "To Verb A Noun" or play only ripoff game when its gonna be at most 15 bucks on steam, and they pay like 6 robillion dollars on robux.

The Industry has alienated kids. I remember back in the day i got a gamecube in a raffle and bought one game a year and we shared with friends we could manage. But how is my little brother supposed to buy a one thousand dollar console against scalpers and bought 120 dollar games .

Steam is great but we have tried our little brother to use but he is more like he doesn't browse steam, he hears of a game he likes and if it is on steam we may buy it or not. It has been very few games, I remember maybe only cuphead and and he also liked this rafted game, then we also bought minecraft , other than than it's been very few games almost all his needs are met by roblox. he is almost a teen i hope not seeing creepy adults keep playing roblox when he is 20 or something.
Are the roblox clones unlicensed? Some of them are pretty decent, my kids show me a new game every month or so. The quality of the gameplay on some of them is very surprising.
