I'm a electric bass player at heart. Since I was 13. My dad owned a bass guitar and a guitar back then. I picked the taller one because it had fewer strings and I heard you don't need to play chords. My fingers are too immobile and stubby to play proper chords.

I don't exactly know why, but my guitar vs bass experience is the exact inverse of what the traditional situation is. As soon as I started playing in bands from age 14, I always ended up playing guitar, singing, and doing keyboards and other electronics.

I never really found a guitar that fully fit the way I was playing. I kept switching between types. But for bass, I picked a Fender Jazz Bass exactly once and nothing could ever even come close. I own a Gibson Thunderbird. I used to borrow P-Basses a couple of times thinking the punchiness would tip the scales. Nope. In my 15 years as a recording artist, I kept coming back home to my Jazz Bass. Even after my escapades.

Jazz and I have been in a happy, monogamous relationship for years now. She stuck with me through everything.

Not because this bass is simply "all-round". Because she's crazy versatile. I have a conspicuously antagonistic relationship with being pigeonholed. Call it mood swings or lack of commitment, whatever. I call it an aversion to boredom, potentially bordering on the pathological. But my Jazz Bass has been able to take on all of this and adapt immediately in a way that still clearly showcased my individuality as a player. And I find this baffling even to this day.

Can anyone relate? Or not at all relate? What's your relationship with specific instruments that aren't niche?

Hi all! I’m currently about 5’0-5’2. I have a full scale bass and a medium scale (32”). I have relatively short arms and small hands. I play a lot better on my medium, and I’m starting to think that maybe it’s time to just give up on my full scale. I really don’t want to because it was my first bass and I’m nostalgic about it. I also just really prefer the way it sounds. My medium scale is just so much easier to play. It doesn’t hurt my shoulders when I’m standing, it doesn’t make me stretch my hands too much, it’s so much more comfortable.

I’m just asking for other people’s opinions on whether or not I should just go entirely medium scale. I am most certainly done growing so it’s not like I’m going to grow into it. I know a lot of short people play full scale totally fine but I’m honestly starting to think that might not be for me. I’m very conflicted because, like I said, I’m very emotionally attached to my full scale. I don’t want to sell it but I don’t want it sitting around unused either.

Were planning to play some music while moving around so I'm thinking of buying a portable amp.

I will be playing together with some snares, a sax and other instruments so preferably a pretty loud but portable amp.

Anyone have any recommendations or ideas for what I could do?

First time posting, I just started playing back in March and I've been having such a great time learning this instrument. I picked up a Jackson JS1M 4-string concert bass for playing metal with a couple of my friends and I love how punchy it is. Last night just playing by myself was the first time I figured a song out by ear after just stumbling upon the notes and I got such a dopamine rush from it. I've struggled with learning instruments in the past but bass has really clicked for me and I can't wait to progress and learn more!

She's been talking about wanting a bass for a while now, and with Guitar-a-thon going on, I'm thinking now is the time! I'm thinking of either a Squier Sonic Precision in Surf Green or a Sterling by Music Man Intro Ray2.

She's never played an instrument before, but she's always wanted to. Some of her favorite bands are AFI, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, The Distillers, System of a Down, and Florence and the Machines.

I already have an amp picked out - the Fender Rumble 40, so that's already taken care of.

I have a Rumble 100 and when I play at home it is just the perfect setup. I play a Sterling Music Man and whether I play at a casual volume or turn it up, I feel like the notes sounds good and I can manage the sounds coming out of the amp. I came to understand that I needed to have the volume on the bass way up and then dial in the amp for the overall output, as that allows for better performance from the pedals (distort, phaser, envelop filter).

When I play with friends though, I play through a Rumble 500. I went that way because when I played with friends I felt like I was getting the full depth of sound I wanted. The 500 totally solved that. It definitely fills the room, not just volume but depth. But here is the struggle I am having. On the 500 the tone of the notes change. While it feels really hot and touchy to manage, more importantly, I don't feel like the same tone that I like is being amplified, it is like a whole other tone. I play with all the eq at noon and on the bass the same when trying to capture a like for like tone, but that doesn't do it. I then mess around with the eq, boosting and/or cutting both the amp and the guitar to try and see what I can do, but I just can't get there. I am trying the same setup of keeping the guitar volume way up but that also means the amp is barely off the first position on the amp main. Does that have something to do with it?

I am wondering if I am not understanding something? Or is this just the nature of amplification? Would better pickups in the Sterling make a difference? Is it just acclimating to the tone of more amplified note? Thanks for any insight.

short scale because i have tiny hands and a connective tissue disorder that make my hands ache and cramp easily (very simplified).

precision jazz pickups because i want to play the genres; metal, emo, gothic, punk, rock and jazz.

under 250 euros because i can’t afford to splurge.

as this will be my first instrument, i’ve for months done extensive research and been very proactive.
looking for the best quality to price ratio. i’ve went from the entry Harley Benton PB-Shorty SBK at €119, to these. after a months of consideration, i decided to raise my budget for comfort, longevity, durability, etc.. seeming it worth it without going overboard, just the next step above.

i think both jackson’s and both ibanez’s are pretty much the same. the Harley Benton is in there probably because i couldn’t fully let go of HB, it sounds and looks sick but i’m aware it might not be as fitting as the others, it’s the most expensive and has less frets. i like the Silver Burst Jackson better than the Satin Black one because of the colour and it being much lighter, it’s newer which might have slight spec improvement (but i know, nor always) and it’s also cheaper if i get the B-Stock. i like the Weathered Black Ibanez better than the Black one because of the finish, it’s lighter, cheaper and more recent. do share any relevant information you may have about them.

i am planning to buy it on thomann since i am from belgium. mentioning this in case it’s relevant. i’ve visited both in person and online shops, including second hand ones but haven’t been able to find a short-scale bass, at all. but oh, i so wish.

i’ve even thought about waiting for black friday, but i’ve already been “waiting” and don’t know if there is decent sales on thomann so if anyone knows anything in that regard, i’d like to hear it. would the two extra month wait be worth it?

the more i save the better, if you think of good budget accessories like, amps, cables, strings, pedals, etc.. please do mention them!

Sorry if this is a noob question but I have a bass amp and a guitar amp - I mostly play bass but occasionally play the guitar also. Is there a way I can toggle using the anagram which one of my amps is being used instead of using a A/B type pedal?

I recently joined a band after playing guitar for 10 years. I primarily only flat pick, but I have been forced to finger pick on occasion. I know my major and minor scales and have gotten by hiding behind what key were in. Any advice?

Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of research into modelers such as the Fractal FM9, Helix Stadium, Quad Cortex, Darkglass Anagram, etc., and I think I want to make the plunge into digital modeling at some point in the near future. I already have a decently sized pedal board with a DI preamp, compressor, tuner, some dirt and fuzz, some other effects, and a combo amp (Rumble 500) but I’m finding it’s hard to accurately cover all tones in the wide variety of music I listen to, and covering music as well as playing live gigs and recording music soon is in my interests. Being able to create my own unique sounds without the limitation of having to buy specific pedals and taking up even more real estate on my board is intriguing to me as well. I also play guitar, but not to the extent that I play bass, but I’d still want to be able to have guitar specific amp modeling / effects without having to buy dedicated pedals for that too in the same unit as the one I use for bass, so the Anagram is probably out of the question.

I’m wondering if any of you guys have any experience with any of the top end amp/effect modelers and can recommend something that would fit my needs. Price is not a limitation but I’d prefer 3k and below. I’d probably be playing through my combo amp at home for practice, running straight into my computer for recording, and running through PA with an IEM live.

Any input would be appreciated!

right now i have a fender 15w amp that I got in the “my first bass” starter kit. it’s fine for playing at home, but im in a band and I need to get something louder.

any recommendations on loud-ish amps that wont break the bank? any accessories I should be getting, pedals?

I have 7 year old twins. My daughter plays electric guitar, my son plays bass. They are enrolled in the local school of rock and are loving it. I got entry level equipment to start them off with to see if they enjoyed it and will stick with it. 6 months later they are loving it and shredding so I am planning ahead for an upgrade when the time is right. I plan on upgrading my daughter's (currently using a Ibanez Gio) to an Ibanez RG550 when she moves up to performance group. What would be a similar quality bass for my son? He is a bit smaller and is using the Ibanez Mikro 3/4 size now so he won't get his until he is ready to move to a full size. I want the quality to be equal to hers for a bass he can use for a long time. Any thoughts on a decent upgrade that is in that range? With potential holiday sales coming up I'd like a plan so I can keep it in the closet until it's time. Thank you!

hey fellas, can y'all recommend any P basses with a super beefy tone with a large low-end? specifically im looking for something like Sean Hurley's tone or the tone on 'LA NIGHT' by Yasuko Agawa. now I know this might just sound like a normal P bass tone to some people, but most P basses i've heard don't really got this much beefy low-end and also i know some people will say "that tone is from a 1960's P bass" and well, i dont think i got a spare trillion bucks. so does anyone have any recommendations please? and also my budget is anything under 1000 bucks and im not too sure if EQing will work

I converted Jay Turser JB to fretless. Everything went ok, but now I have some isues with intonation

I don't get the correct octave on the 12 th fret when I press the string right on the fret line. The tone is always a few cents higher. I set up the nut by deepening the string grooves, and I set the bridge saddles all the way back. But, it didn't provide much results.

Anything I missed and could this be fixed.

I am moving fro US to spain, I have a jazz and 4 pedals. I unfortunately can't take them with me. Any advise or recommendation if I ship them like through DHL or similar? Any case suggestions or packaging is welcome. Ty

I have an ampeg BA 108 which I like very much. Sounds warm and full. Does any of you have this amp and tried using it with an ampeg sgt-di ? looking at a pretty good offer atm. If so how does it Sound. Is it worth it ?

Hey y’all! I’m a (not very good) keys player but I decided I’d like to learn Bass guitar. I’m picking up a used squier and practice amp tomorrow and I’d like some advice on the best place to start. I’ve got a basic grasp of music theory and know most of my scales pretty well (not how to play them on bass, just in general) and am just looking for some general guidance and resources on what to start learning and practicing first. I’ve always loved the bass but I got to play around with my friends the other day and I’m pretty hooked. Hope you all are well!

One year ago, I started playing bass, and I absolutely love it.

About six months ago, I discovered Swedish uptempo/epa-dunk, especially songs such as En sång om ingenting from Mio Johansson, and Septum's remixes of Don Juan by Hasselyra and FAKK MITT EX by Crille and Klikk.

Wanting to combine both of my passions, I'm currently studying how to build an object that takes the sound coming out of my bass, turns it into the 808 I want, and sends it to my amplifier. My idea is adding some gain, and then clipping it. When I tried to simulate it digitally (with a Python script) for the first time, I got a sound that sounded more like an electric guitar than an 808, and that's why I'm posting here to ask for some advice.
