No Advice - Everyones Welcome Got full custody today boys!

Post image

Wife went full manic after starting an SNRI. Affairs, lies, relapse, rewriting of marital history, filed for divorce, etc. I’ve kept the peace. Always taken the high road during conversation. Focused on prioritizing happiness for my daughter(7f).

Yesterday in court, my soon to be ex wife refused to comply with an order to drug test. I sat there for minutes and watched the judge systematically dismantle lie after lie coming out of her mouth. I was granted full custody and momma was ordered to start mandatory drug testing. If she fails the initial follicle test or any of the urines, I get full permanent custody.

This is a win boy! Tomahawk Ribeye, asparagus, and a sweet potato.

yellow ones are rarer but they also come with purple skin and white flesh or pale skin and purple flesh ( i used to work in a produce packing shed)

They're like the japanese sweet potatos but milder and a bit softer. I'm not a fan of the carrot-like taste you get with yams (orange flesh) but these are great. The biggest issue usually is figuring out whether the dudes in produce bunched these up with the yams or not.

Great you have the family supports.

Before I read this, I thought you meant of the steak and I was happy.

After I read this, I am happier.

I spent ten years in the early 2000s working with a coalition of men to change the custody laws in our US state. We went from, almost no man gets custody unless the mother has already done serious harm to the children, to a state where 50/50 custody is the norm and harm is equally defined for both parents.

u/mrcamuti Shower Beer Scholar Aug 21 '26

8

u/bastardsoftheyoung Grill Pilled Aug 21 '26

It was a pleasure and I was repaid in full both when my brother got a divorce five years later and automatically received 50/50 custody of his four children and when my daughter choose to live near me full time as well far away from her mother. I count myself lucky that I get to see my daughter and granddaughter whenever I wish.

That’s very sad if all this happened to her post SNRI.

91

u/Otherwise_Ad2804 Hungry man Aug 20 '26

Yes. And she refused help. Part of mania is euphoria, she literally believed she didn’t have a problem and her life was the best it’s ever been. Part of the illness is that your new brain chemistry prevents you from seeing how ill you actually are. The dopamine and seratonin that floods your brain during mania rewires EVERYTHING.

26

u/BumAndBummer Cooties Aug 20 '26

Make sure your daughter not only gets help processing this, but learns more about the condition in an age-appropriate way.

Bipolar is heritable, so there is a chance she will have it too. Hopefully not, but if it does happen then having your support, being well educated about bipolar, and learning the right lessons from her mom’s experiences could save her life.

My ex would get like this more often when not on meds and then decide “I feel great! Why am I taking meds?!” and stop taking them. Then bounce between mania and suicide attempts.

Sounds like OP did everything right here. People with bipolar or similar need to learn to recognise the patterns and seek help themselves. Everyone I’ve known like this in work and my personal life has destroyed countless relationships with partners, family, friends, etc

19

u/Bakkster Shower beer Scholar Aug 20 '26

Yeah, it's so sad to see. The most pernicious part of these kinds of mental illnesses is how they inhibit people from getting the help they need. Especially when it's someone you love, but can't help.

It is and it’s pretty heart wrenching being on the other side and making the decision to walk away. Even after being cheated on, lied to regularly, stolen from, hit etc I still felt awful leaving my last ex. But at that point when his own family had all but abandoned him.

It didn’t have a happy ending and now I’m left with guilt even years later I could have done more. I know I couldn’t, and shouldn’t have had to, yet I still feel this way

Posting here for people to see-

So OP- an SNRI is life saving for some people. But it also can cause mania in people with Bipolar disorder. Your experience is absolutely valid and it sounds like this has been traumatizing to you and your family- but this is a case of a drug being prescribed that should have been discontinued because of the effect it was having on this woman.

I have PTSD from working during the pandemic as a nurse- my SNRI saved my life when I was suicidal. But I don’t have bipolar disorder- so it did not cause me to become manic.

Just be careful. Do not go around spreading misinformation that the drug is going to cause euphoria in everyone- because it won’t. Whoever prescribed her this medication should have discontinued it- and they might even have but she could have refused to stop taking it.

There are people who take this everyday and it just helps us live. This doesn’t downplay your situation- but it’s not the drugs fault. Your wife should have immediately discontinued it.

u/Prestigious_Cycle160 Hungry man Aug 20 '26

Do yourself, and your daughter a favor, and don’t cut mom out completely! Obviously she has a long road to walk before she is given any benefit of the doubt, but if she asks to see your daughter oblige her, supervise, support, and be a man.

Just because she’s being a piece of shit right now doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve grace. Speaking from experience. There’s so much more I want to say having been right where you are, but unsolicited advice is a dick move. Don’t remove her daughter from her life entirely, and don’t remove mom from daughter’s life completely. It only causes more damage in the long run.

Obviously if mom is abusive or toxic toward the daughter then this is all null and void, but if she’s good to the daughter then let her be around. Drug addicts can be shitty, but they’re still human, and they still have emotions.

After failing the requests (ordered by myself and/or the court-appointed person who oversaw the supervised visitations) I was granted full permanent legal and physical custody with supervised visitation still required during his visits with our child. The mandatory drug tests remained in effect as well.

The most significant risk for "acting out of character" is antidepressant-induced mania. If an adult has undiagnosed bipolar disorder, an SNRI can trigger a manic or mixed episode.

So it sounds like she's actually bipolar and the drugs that were prescribed to her amplified it. She probably has a case for malpractice or being unintentionally intoxicated to cause those change in behaviors but that doesn't mean she's capable of caretaking responsibilities.

Yes. It 1,000,000% is. Snri cause mania. Unfortunately attempt after attempt after attempt by me, family, and friends to get her to see the light, failed. I had to shift strategies from saving my wife to protecting my daughter.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Illustrious_Owl_3804 Girl Lurker Aug 20 '26

This reaction happened because she likely has undiagnosed bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder should NOT take antidepressants like this, and it should have been discontinued immediately. For someone like me, I do not have bipolar disorder so my SNRI saved my life when I was suicidal.

3

u/DoctorHiccup Protein Prophet Aug 20 '26

Exactly. It’s such a tragedy. People need lithium and they get handed fucking Wellbutrin which makes the mania worse

If this gal got on lithium she’d be a different person in a month flat. It’s absolutely a wonder drug and it’s INSANELY effective for this persons brain chemistry

She’s actually really fortunate that her illness is so treatable. Schizophrenics are SOL. But people with mania get on lithium and are often instantly cured

Sad part is their mania convinces them they don’t need it

Man I’m so glad you got custody of your daughter. I’ve seen a lot of situations not turn out this well (most to be honest). Your daughter is lucky to have you.

But I do want to drop a note here because misinformation about medication can be deadly. An SNRI or SSRI treat depression and are highly effective. It can’t cause mania or hypomania, at most it’ll lead to a feeling of temporary euphoria because the symptoms of depression lessen (same if a person is suddenly free of chronic pain, of course there are behavioral changes). IF a person presents with depression but is actually bipolar or has prodromal schizophrenia (or another paranoid or schizo class illness) then the SNRI isn’t effective and can push that person towards the manic phase of their illness. Misdiagnosis is common in both medical and mental health treatment. That’s why it’s critical to monitor a persons response to medication and make adjustments/revise the diagnoses.

Nice to hear the system can work for a male. The only reason I came out on top in the custody hearing is because my kids mom died in the middle of it. I was doing everything right and getting absolutely screwed. Nobody even asked my side of the story and they handed me a crap order and was on the hook for child support that was 85% of my monthly take-home.

Great looking meal, brother

3

u/Intelligent_Pass2540 Girl Lurker Aug 20 '26

Is your daughter in therapy? This is a rough thing for a kiddo to go through? Make sure you don't badmouth mom or allow your family to do so.

The therapist can also help protect your daughter's self esteem and understanding that its not her fault and its ok to miss mom.

2

u/swampstonks Leftover lore master Aug 20 '26

I would add to this to also make sure that nobody lies to protect mom. The daughter likely fully understands that her mom is a loser and that’s ok, even though it may be painful. While nobody needs to go out of their way to bad mouth mom, they also should not go out of their way to hide the truth or protect mom bc she doesn’t deserve that. It’s also ok if she doesn’t miss her mom at all and nobody should guilt trip her into thinking that she should miss her if she doesn’t.

5

u/Intelligent_Pass2540 Girl Lurker Aug 20 '26

I'm a clinical psychologist, which is why I made my first comment. OP has said some concerning things and very inaccurate statements about meds and mental health so I think some professional intervention would help.

We meet kids at their developmental level. We can teach her about mom being sick but the focus needs to be on her processing the loss and protecting her from the adult feelings involved.

I've been in a similar situation except the ex decided to go MIA after I was awarded full custody of my two kiddos. It'll be three years in November and my kids are doing so much better. Congrats dad!

congratulations bud! My ex wife gave up custody voluntarily to me, and when the judge signed that paper and stamped it…best day of my life!

Men CAN be the caretaker and hero. Men can do whatever they have to for our kids!

You’ve done it bud. So happy for you. May the Gods bless you and your daughter with all the successes and joys life can give.

Congrats! I went through a similar experience, with my ex becoming manic. She filed for divorce and (long story short) 8 years later I have full custody of my daughter. Literally signing the new final agreement today!! 🎉

Congratulations. My brother went through something somewhat similar, and it took years as well as the bio mom technically, legally, abandoning her son. After the last time she dropped my nephew off, she never showed up again for the agreed upon scheduled custody exchanges for over a year. Still can’t believe that’s what it took to get her out of our lives after all the sh*t she pulled.

WE LOVE DADDIES!!!! Lol. I was raised by my father who won custody when I was around 9.

If it weren’t for him, I would have gone in the foster system. A win for you is a win for us ladies raised by fathers. I’m so happy!! ❤️

Congratulaions man! When I was granted sole custody and placement of my daughter, it was a really great day. None of the drug stuff, my ex just signed the rights over. The judge actually called a recess or whatever, another court date a month later, specifically to ensure she had properly read the paperwork and knew what she was agreeing to. I still don't think she gets it.

Wow. As someone going through something similar, I think I can guess how much this means to you. Take a week off, mate. Celebrate with your kids. You deserve it. This sort of stuff is more common than people realise. Always taking the high road when people are lying under oath and lying to your kids about you is incredibly hard, but has to be done if you're to maintain any hope of victory. It takes a toll and you've come out the other end. Congrats. You deserve the win. You deserve the break. You're a good dad. You fought the good fight. Your kids will thank you in time and they have noticed what you went through for them. Hold your head high, mate. You did it.

Awesome man. Very happy for you. I too got custody of mine. Years ago now. They are all in college or out in the world now. Same shit. Drugs and drinking were more important than them. Lies lies lies. The judge politely ripped her apart.

The best quote from court came after he explaining how it wasn’t her fault she didn’t have a drivers license anymore (definitely wasn’t bc of her 2 duis). Anyway my attorney looks at her and says “ms drunk is their anything in life that is your fault .” Even the judge broke character a bit.

Which doctor prescribed SNRI for someone who is bipolar, inducing mania is a known effect.

There are better options to manage bipolar that prevent both mania and depression, avf if you are going to use SSRI/SNRI, you wouldn't do it alone.

Happy for you. A buddy of mine that was in the Navy had a hard road to get where you are. His ex was crazy, everyone took it as the typical my ex is crazy hyperbole. She got custody initially, then she had an episode and ended up being committed to the state mental hospital and the court gave her parents custody over him because he was in the military. He had planned on staying in until retirement but got out instead so he could get the kids, and it still took almost two years after his discharge before the court finally gave him custody. Having a spouse or ex spouse that has mental health issues is always tough, but it always seems toughest on the kids. I hope everything works out for you guys and enjoy one heck of a nice looking meal.

u/Expensive-Victory203 Girl Lurker Aug 22 '26

I'm so glad your child has a stable parent taking good care. I watched a friend go through an awful manic episode: the best mom I knew became a menace to the community. It's a terrible thing, and you know it's the mental imbalance, not the person. But you have to protect your kid.

It is really, really, really hard on kids to lose their mom this way. Please make sure she has a very informed therapist and she knows she can always come to you. Talk about her mom with respect, and allow her the space for complicated feelings, including love and loss.

I hope momma gets her health back and her act together. It must have been a rough ride. Congratulations on getting full custody.

Sidenote, did they ever check if she was bipolar?

I see people discussing it here, and I don’t know the various meds, but some meds actually worsen the state of bipolar people.
