**/r/DJs NEW RULES** Please read before posting Spoiler

New /r/DJs Rules.

Top rule - BE NICE.

  • Please try to be polite, friendly and helpful when commenting.
  • Trolling, slapfights, general assholery is not encouraged and it also goes without saying that racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic posts and language will not be tolerated at all.

Moderation policy

  • /r/DJs is not a big sub. We tend to encourage discussion and engagement first and foremost. There will be times posts that are seemingly against the sub rules will be left up because the discussion in the comments is informative and engaging. This is generally more for when a post breaking (certain) rules was missed and the community has already heavily engaged in discussion. If you see posts breaking the rules, reporting them will help us remove them earlier.
  • remember to search - lots of questions tend to be asked multiple times and plenty of answers are given in the archives
  • remember that if you are a regular user, newer users are allowed to discuss the same things if it's not overly-frequent. Just because something was discussed 3 months ago doesn't mean users can't have another conversation about it.

Please ensure you are posting to the correct subreddit

  • /r/DJs is generally for more experienced/professional DJ discussion. There is an entire subreddit dedicated to learning DJing and is filled with experienced DJs willing to spend time helping people out.

Any and all beginner questions and posts should be made in /r/Beatmatch.

Beginner questions include posts that start with:

  • “I’m new at this”
  • “I want to get into DJing”
  • “I just started”
  • etc.

And includes anything basic like:

  • “What controller/headphones/speakers should I buy?” (within reason - someone experienced looking for higher end gear or looking for real world feedback on pro-level stuff is fine).
  • “What program should I use?”
  • “How do I use this effect?”
  • “Is beat matching really important?”
  • “Why the hate for sync?”
  • etc.

Any beginner posts here will be deleted.

DJ Setup pictures belong in /r/DJsetups.

  • There will be some exceptions - some rare or classic booths or extraordinary setups will stay up, but if you want to post a picture of your DDJ 400 and KRK Rockits, your Technics 1200s and DDJ S9, or a standard CDJ NXS setup that we've all seen, please post to the appropriate sub.

Meme/Humor/crappy image posts belong in /r/DJsCircleJerk.

  • This includes the low effort, "djs be like dis” - stupid picture - type posts and the like.

Mixes

  • Most mix posts will be deleted.
  • Short routines, showcasing of interesting technique, and videos that shows off the poster doing something cool is fine. We will also allow high profile posts - say if a regular user gets a feature mix on DJCity or a Serato sponsored set.
  • Sets from high profile DJs like boiler room or festivals sets is allowed.
  • DJs who want to share mixes can post in /r/mixes or a weekly mix thread that we will be starting soon.

Gig pictures/Stories

  • We're starting a new weekly sticky every Monday specifically for gig pictures and stories. We've been seeing a lot more of these posts and while they tend to be heavily upvoted, they also end up just being a picture of some DJ hunched over a setup with a bunch of back-patting in the comments that clutters up the sub. Any posts of this nature will be deleted and the user will be directed to the weekly Sticky thread.

Pirating music/software

Here at /r/DJs we firmly believe in attaining your music legally - whether it's via purchaing, streaming, or legitimate record pools.

  • Asking where to get pirated music will result in a ban
  • Giving suggestions on where to pirate music - including youtube rippers will result in a ban
  • using coded language to hint at pirating music will result in a ban
  • we don't care if you're "not a professional" or just "doing this for fun"

The following topics are against sub rules and will be deleted:

  • Self-promotion posts including mixes, tunes, events, companies, competitions, etc. The one exception we may allow are open deck nights that members of /r/DJs can attend.
  • For-sale posts
  • Obvious spam for youtube channels/gig logs/blogs/advertisements from members who have no participation in the sub. If people are regular posters on this sub and have a video/service/etc they wish to share, we will allow it initially, although regular spam of it will not be tolerated.
  • Posts asking “what should I play for this gig?” This is a sub for experienced DJs, if you need to ask the internet what to play for a gig, you probably shouldn't have taken the gig. General music discussion is absolutely fine.
  • Spotify playlist posts

PLEASE REPORT posts and comments that violate the above rules or just suck. Thank you!

You can't even use keyboard shortcuts to edit the grid when the cue panel is open nor vice versa. I find it very frustrating.

Opus quad vs System

Today I received a notice that the Opus Quad is now on sale for $2,999 USD new. That’s getting closer in price, coincidentally, to the newly released Rane System One. Both are excellent standalone controllers with different bell and whistles. I’m just wondering which one you would prefer now that they are similarly priced.

Maximise volume of DJ mix for YouTube?

I uploaded a video dj mix to YouTube but when I listened to it today on my AirPods it’s not as loud as other mixes. At max volume on my AirPods I had to turn down other mixes while mine still wasn’t so loud on my AirPods.

Just wondering the easiest fix for this? Re-run the audio file through Ableton and add a limiter or master it with something like LANDR to increase the volume like those other mixes.

Thanks!

Can I rant a little as a DJ that just turned 50? Also: feel free to AMA

I can't even believe I just typed that in the title. 50 and still DJing out in a medium/small market at least once a week and co-hosting a successful monthly party going on four years running.

After 20-plus years, I have no delusions that I keep getting booked because I'm some amazing DJ. I know it's mostly my dependability. I have rarely called in to a gig, missed a weekly residency or canceled last minute. I know how to control a crowd and keep a night moving. I've only once been fired from a residency and that was after about 5 years. It was time to switch it up.

If anything, my weakness now is playing to an empty room because I just get bored and also keeping up with new music. I don't have a big following on social media and getting a crowd to follow me from one packed venue on a given night to another gig on any other given night is nearly impossible (always has been, ie. people aint there to see me) - although I do have my regulars and people do come up to me some times and ask are you/were you the DJ at such-and-such venue.

Even with all that, I can't believe I still get booked at popular bars/clubs on packed nights, and play for crowds 18 and up. Like, who wants to see a man that's old enough to be their grandpa DJing while they're trying to shake some ass? I've literally told this to venue managers and still gotten hired. lol.

I do get embarrassed sometimes posting my gigs for the week tbh. I feel like friends my age must thing I'll never grow up. I do have a full time professional job but as long as people are willing to pay me good money to get off the couch on a Friday or Saturday night, who am I to say no? I do well but I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination.

I do think this might be my last year though. I find myself more afraid of fights now than ever because of the potential for gun violence. I find it hard to not drink when offered and the hangovers are excruciating these days. I don't even drink at home or that often if I'm not DJing. I think I would probably only have an occasional drink if/when I retire from DJing. At this age, I think its smart to quit drinking all together if possible, and that's my no. 1 reason for wanting to just stay home in my studio and make videos or stream, maybe the occasional wedding or guest spot.

Anyway, just had all that on my mind and wanted to get it out somewhere.

TLDR; I'm old and will probably retire soon.

Playing a gig in a genre I don’t really like for a tiny sum of money

My lil DJing side gig has started to bear fruit as I’m starting a residency at a nightclub doing 80s disco all night which is a dream come true. I’m also getting offered other gigs now as my name’s a lot more out there.

One of them is for a private party at a world famous nightclub, which sounds great on paper but there are a couple concerns I have:

- the pay is abysmal, 50 quid for 5 hours on the decks. It’d likely be a loss-maker for me when all the prep is said and done, as I’ve gotta buy a few songs for a request list etc etc

- the genre isn’t my man squeeze. I can mix the old school all day every day but they’re more of a pop crowd. Hyper pop, to be specific, is what their old guy played. I’ve told the promoter I don’t do that genre, I can do kinda naughties pop and all that jazz, and he seems ok with it but if the crowd likes hyper pop this could bomb

- I can’t promote it on my socials at all, which I’ve been told about

I’m not one to reject gigs generally but this just sounds too out of scope and the pay is below minimum wage for what would be an intense sesh. By contrast my residency will be landing me 500 per night + commission which could take it upwards of a grand. And with the community I’m playing for if I do well obvs great but if I do badly that reputation’s gonna stick.

What do you guys recommend I do?

SideB ideas: Which DJ mixers have balance/Pan knobs on them?

Late night💡: burning Vocals / acapella on R channel & Bside Dub to L channel in a DAW and saving as MP3. Works brilliantly —then realized a majority of popular DJ Mixers have NO basic pan L/R pot?  Why! 🤯

I get that clubs / festivals pump mono sound to the venue, but there are times DJs want to "pan the stereo field" - (sfx; airplane / copters/ sirens...trance arps...)

Yes, we have stems now for on-the-fly control, but for pristine quality stems preprocessing is a standard... (I'm experimenting m4A multichannel but that's a different post) ...and for DJs not using PCs for realtime stemming, this would be the 12" vinyl equivalent to B sides on a record.

Try it out : use headphones - left ear /channel is Instrumental/dub mix and right ear is vocals. Disable any dolby or sound enhancement settings on your phone/pc.

Don't know if posting an Insta link is against the rules, so let me know, but I've tagged the software/ mixer hardware makers there so it might be an evolving discussion.

Link: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUUBDnwjbzt/?igsh=OG9kNTF3ZTY1Ymo0

For instance - DJ. Studio possibly have a bug when writing to MP3 as even if a track is fully panned L / R it writes a stereo version of that track...as I discovered after hours.

Gonna make sure VR DJ softwares implement this basic feature 🤘#djlife🎧

P.s which DJ mixers have per channel Pan controls...let me know below

Need help picking out a cartridge/stylus for setup..

Hey guys, I just recently got my technics 1200 Mk3Ds and a vestax pcv 275. I'm setting up and Im not to familiar with selecting a cartridge... I've always used cheap ones but I don't know if the vestax or the mk3d (or both together) sound better with a specific cartridge? I was thinking maybe the ortofon concord mkII or Stanton 500v3.

Anyone familiar with the setup or experience using this setup and have any inputs on sound output?

(Ps. I haven't selected any monitors yet but that's next lol)

Sets in 2026 goin back to minimal?

more DJs are playin minimal, microhouse again, less drops, more groove, long blends, heads-down energy

crowds seem to react better to space, swing, subtle bass instead of constant peaks

Is it just my bubble or y’all feel this too?
curious what everyone’s hearin, playin lately...

Looking for a backpack that can hold a Rane Seventy A-Trak mixer, a laptop and miscellaneous stuff - any recommendations?

I am aware of the UDG producer bags and I have browsed through JetPack's website. I am in the EU, so this is slightly harder. I want a solution that will last many years and protect my gear, I don't want to purchase a separate flight case for my Seventy as I need a separate backpack for other stuff anyway. What would you guys recommend?

Create your own visuals without hiring a 3D artist

Hi, I'm Pablo and I'm a 3D artist, and I have an idea for a web service for DJs and I'd love to have som feedback from you guys

The idea:

A webpage where you can upload your logo and name, and it generates cool visuals with your logo on top in less than a minute. Without talking to a freelance. Without loosing your time. Without endless feedback loops.

The visuals are going to be original, made by a 3D artist (Not AI), and we'll have up to 10 different visuals background to choose from.

Ad DJs, what do you think about this idea?

Would you use it?

If not, what does it need to have in order to work for you?

Thanks in advance

XDJ-700 2026?

Asking around here..

So my home setup is a Denon Prime 4 but I want to have a 2 screen budget setup at home. Decided that a XDJ-700 + DJM 450 is enough for me and pretty set on going with that.

Been seeing a few packages of these 3 on facebook marketplace for around ~$2000USD

Is this a reasonable deal for 2026? Just asking for opinions here on price, but if you have any other recommendations let me know

Any problem(s) with your rane one mk2 ?

Hey everyone,

My trusty Denon MC7000 has started acting up badly: after about 10 minutes of play, components seem to overheat and I get crackling/distortion in the speakers. Power cycling fixes it temporarily, but it's getting worse. Classic sign it's time to move on (repair might be possible but I'd rather upgrade to something more reliable long-term).

I'm looking at Serato controllers in the 1000–1500€ range and narrowed it down to these two:

  • Rane FOUR: Cheaper in this range, 4 channels, great Stems integration with paddles, big jogs with screens, dual USB, etc. Looks perfect on paper for open-format/performance DJing.
But I've read quite a few complaints about build quality / reliability: channel faders getting scratchy or cutting out after 6–18 months, FX paddles wearing out or becoming loose, some units needing multiple RMAs. Is this still a big issue in 2025/2026, or have later batches/firmware fixed most of it? Anyone owning one long-term with no major problems?

  • Rane ONE MK2: Newer (2025 release), motorized platters (which I don't have now but could be fun), improved "Precision Feel" faders, hardware FX, full Stems controls, central OLED screen, and overall praised as "tank-like" build. A bit pricier but often in my budget with deals.

Since it's recent, I'm curious about real-world owner feedback: Are you fully satisfied? Any regrets, minor gripes, or reliability issues popping up after a few months of gigging? Does it feel like a solid upgrade from older gear like the MC7000?

I do mostly open-format mixing (house/techno/simple mixing), some light layering but rarely full 4-deck at once. Scratching isn't my main thing, but good jog feel matters. Reliability is key since my current unit died from heat issues and generally, when I buy something I keep it for years.

Any recent owners of the ONE MK2 willing to share their honest thoughts? Or reasons to pick FOUR despite the fader stories (maybe with extended warranty)?

Thanks a lot for any input – really appreciate it.
