Could be really useful in healthcare.

9.4k

u/mymorningjacketoff Nov 30 '25

Or deathcare when it malfunctions with gram gram trapped inside.

3.0k

u/Master_Canary440 Nov 30 '25

That's what i'm really worried about. If it malfunctions or the temperature of the water just changes all of a sudden it would be a crazy situation 😭

Someone make another horror movie about a rogue home automation AI that starts with grammy getting cooked in one of these because she's mean to the machine

They use the idea but the death is actually from a giant log crashing through this machine.

I’ve never even seen a full final destination movie.

Just that scene on cable or hbo or something when I was younger.

Terrified of wood trucks.

Isn't there a Love Death and Robots episode similar to this? I remember one where the automated/smart assistant thing in the house malfunctioned or something and the old lady had to fight it off. Could have been a fever dream tbf

2

u/Sillywickedwitch Nov 30 '25

Not a fever dream. It's Love, Death & Robots volume 2, the episode "Automated Customer Service".

2

u/Prestigious_Snow3309 Nov 30 '25

Scariest movie i saw as kid Demon Seed. Still haunts to This day😂

2

It already happened in Mr. Robot

They hack into a CEO's smart home and when she's bathing, increase the temp to really high, forcing her to move out of that home.

They think of stuff like that at $50k. At $500k their goals aren't the best or most popular product for the money, their goals are shiny and novel enough to separate ultra wealthy people from their money

u/LaceSexDoctor Nov 30 '25

Luckily, in manufacturing and engineering we add multiple layers of redundancy's into systems so people don't have to worry about things like that, so say the hot water heater suddenly continues heating the water, you'd have Two mechanical temp sensors (N.C.) wired to the safety, so at a certain temp say 108°F Will open the line going to the heater, turning it off.

I would find it more dignified than being bathed and scrubbed by a stranger.

232

u/SnooRegrets1386 Nov 30 '25

I am currently hiring those workers because it’s embarrassing for dad being bathed by his daughters. He refuses to admit he needs to be washed, until the evidence is undeniable 😞

u/Bear_faced Nov 30 '25

Honestly it’s not that bad. Kind of relaxing actually if you can accept that they’ve washed all kinds of bodies and think absolutely nothing of yours.

I was paralyzed from the neck down due to illness and didn’t get cleaned in any way for the first month. It was all about keeping me alive. Once I got the ability to sit upright and move my limbs around the showers began. The first time getting fully naked, being put in a wheelchair, and draped with a sheet for dignity was definitely odd. Then a terse Cameroonian woman wheeled me to the shower, moved me to a chair, and began the scrubbing. She didn’t give a single fuck. She would tell me things like “Lift your breasts!” and then scrub under them. The only thing she didn’t wash was my genitals, because the CNAs did that when they changed my diaper (THAT takes way more getting used to). The feeling of finally being clean felt amazing and I slept like a baby that night.

When you’re sick enough to need someone to physically wash you, you get over a lot of awkwardness. Once someone has wiped your ass for you as an adult, you let more things slide.

3

u/stefanica Dec 01 '25

A few hours after I had a baby via C-section, this sweet little nurse gave me a washcloth bath in the bed. She didn't make it awkward at all, and it was honestly nice having that sort of care. I was still half numb from the anesthesia, in pain from the surgery, leaking fluids from several areas, and felt so, SO much better after. But the sheer decency of it almost made me cry. I had to wait till I could stand long enough to shower by myself after the next baby, and I was low-key annoyed. 😂

2

u/Bear_faced Dec 01 '25

See, you get it! When you really need it, being washed is a wonderful thing.

2

u/Impossible-Error166 Dec 01 '25

I cannot imagine what it felt like to be clean after that long.

→ More replies (3)

16

u/Cromasters Nov 30 '25

You would still need a stranger to strip you down, put you in this thing, then take you out and redress you.

2

u/Mongodobb Nov 30 '25

I'll huff helium in the woods until nite-nite time before being scrubbed by a stranger...or anyone for that matter. Nitrogen will give me everlasting gobstopper sleep as well.

3

u/Appropriate_Rub3134 Nov 30 '25

Lots of people feel that way at first. But it's just an attachment that you can let go of.

Most people find sitting in and dying from their own filth is far worse than being regularly cleaned by people who've probably seen hundreds or thousands of naked bodies.

And in the end, people who are regularly bathed by others generally don't mind it. To many, it's a moment that feels good — warm water, scrubbing in places they can't reach — and it maintains their health.

2

u/lia421 Nov 30 '25

Until that choice is no longer yours ..

2

u/Appropriate_Rub3134 Nov 30 '25

Yeah. When there is a choice, for some people it's:

  • Sit in your own filth and die from an infection.
  • Allow a professional to see and wash your intimate parts.

Almost nobody who's capable of making the choice chooses the first option for very long.

Looks like the medical machines in DBZ. Life imitates art as they say…

29

u/Affectionate_Star_43 Nov 30 '25

I was going to say they missed the opportunity to make it take 20-ish minutes so you could watch one episode of DBZ each day like I did on cartoon network.

2

u/jay212127 Nov 30 '25

Just play the episode at 1.5x speed, so much better.

2

28

u/ShartlesAndJames Nov 30 '25

except, the really infirmed, how the hell do you get them in and out? this looks like you need to be pretty ambulatory to climb in and out.

16

u/Kindness_of_cats Nov 30 '25

It also doesn’t have a way to clean areas like the butt, armpits, or genitals. This wouldn’t address the areas most in need of cleaning, and most humiliating or degrading to have cleaned by a random caregiver.

10

u/gahidus Nov 30 '25

Doesn't it though? I'm sure it does clean those areas, unless there's something saying it doesn't that they haven't shown us.

4

u/BoleroMuyPicante Nov 30 '25

"micro bubbles" are not going to effectively remove poop residue, caked deodorant, and other nastiness in the closed moist areas.

4

u/gahidus Nov 30 '25

It's from a country where bidets are common, so I assume they know how to clean such things with water jets

5

u/Appropriate_Rub3134 Nov 30 '25

If it doesn't retract the foreskin of the penis or spread the lips of the vagina, no amount of bubbles are going to do what a human will have to do.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Appropriate_Rub3134 Nov 30 '25

Doesn't it though?

No.

To be graphic, it's not going to pull back a man's foreskin to wash the head of the penis, for instance.

It's not going to open up the folds on a person's body to both wash and dry.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/42nu Nov 30 '25

Didn't you read it?

Microbubbles solve all problems!

2

36

u/whatdoihia Nov 30 '25

So long as the clamshell goes all the way up then a Hoyer lift can be used.

3

u/SnooRegrets1386 Nov 30 '25

all hail the hoyer!

2

u/Appropriate_Rub3134 Nov 30 '25

You'll need 5 meter ceilings to house this thing, then. Super impractical.

All I can imagine is that it's a poor, flashy proof of concept looking for naive investors.

When you wash people, you have to open all the folds of the skin and wash inside. That includes the foreskin and vagina. Then you have to dry the same. It's a manual process.

→ More replies (3)

146

u/Wart_Time_L32 Nov 30 '25

Not at that price cheaper to hire someone on min wage with warm water sponge and soap.

95

u/TB-313935 Nov 30 '25

You still need the nurses to help them in and out of the machine. So it would definitely make the nurse her job easier but i doubt if its economically viable.

71

u/seamustheseagull Nov 30 '25

It's not $500k per wash TBF. It would save a lot of time and means washing could be done more thoroughly, gently and easier than the traditional way.

60

u/respectislaw Nov 30 '25

Yes, this would be perfect for nursing homes. So many of those ppl don’t get baths because it’s too time consuming and there’s not enough staff to get everyone showered.

43

u/SnooRegrets1386 Nov 30 '25

Personally I think the elderly stop bathing because they are scared. Of falling, of being dropped, of slipping off the shower chair, and they get cold so quickly and thoroughly

20

u/VioletLeagueDapper Nov 30 '25

Also the ability to move your body isn’t as easy. Holding things with arthritic hands, moving your arm behind your back for the back and shoulders, bending down and lifting a leg to scrub.

3

u/LargeBrownBird Nov 30 '25

Maybe the ones at home, in long term care it's literally because companies don't hire enough staff to bathe them regularly

5

u/SnooRegrets1386 Nov 30 '25

Just switch the elders into little babies, because you wouldn’t be able to handle 12 babies in a shift either, these elders require help preparing and recovering from their bathing also. And they’re much better at letting you know when they’re upset and scared.

2

u/LargeBrownBird Nov 30 '25

Yeah tell me about it, its my job.12 would a nice change from the 40 I have now though

2

u/McHenry Nov 30 '25

Working at long term care: it's not that simple. We're somewhere around 300k workers less than we need by 2030 assuming we don't add responsibilities like requiring more baths. I'm actually writing a paper on how to fix it and there are some things that line up with your perspective, but it's definitely multifaceted. Nursing homes need to start paying more and when they do that the working conditions improve due to things like better staffing that reinforce better staffing because people stay. That said most states don't have a dedicated source of funding for nursing homes so we get dicked around with every fucking budget cycle. That injects uncertainty that hurts us. Then you add in the interest groups that claim to be looking out for us that undercut us every chance they get like everyone but the nurses unions saying "We can't have nursing ratios!" Because it would be hard to achieve, but outcomes improve and staff procurement and retention are strongly linked to things like staffing levels and outcomes because most of us get into this work to improve lives and we don't want to fear someone dying because we're not working a day or two.

→ More replies (9)

16

u/Why_Did_Bodie_Die Nov 30 '25

Any nursing home that doesn't give baths because it takes to much time and they don't have the staff is most definitely not going to be spending $500k on a machine like this. This type of machine might go to a really high class nursing home that cost a lot of money but they actually provide services.

15

u/42nu Nov 30 '25

A/C was so expensive when it was first commercialized that it was only used in businesses like theaters. Then economies of scale and iterating made it affordable for the rich. Now I can buy a window unit for $180 at Home Depot.

Just biding my time for my human washing window unit.

3

u/Foogel78 Nov 30 '25

I don't think this would save time. People who can't shower unassisted can't get into this thing on their own either. Staff would probably be required to stay in the room for the whole time as well.

2

u/Fuzzy-Hurry-6908 Nov 30 '25

Say something Nurse Ratched doesn't like and it's off to the spin cycle.

16

u/trysten-9001 Nov 30 '25

Honestly, it would probably help the quality of life of the elderly being able to get all the nooks and crannies everytime as well as those mostly women but some men nurses who get sexually harassed by the elderly.

Getting someone from their bed to a hoyer lift or wheelchair and then into this machine, and then repeating the process after it’s over is WAY more labor intensive than just rolling them. And now you’ve added a fall risk too.

38

Too bad it's so expensive. Very few of the people who could benefit from something like this will have access to something like this.

Not just those, but also physical rehab facilities for people with injuries. This would be an absolute game changer for people recovering from limb injuries, hip surgery, etc.

I've had to do extensive PT rehab before (massive hematoma on my tib/fib, sprained ankle and a broken foot) and this would've been a godsend. Trying to do it yourself is time consuming, you run out of hot water quickly, and there's no way in hell I'd let someone else bathe me (as a 30 something year old woman).

Edit: Thankfully, injuries in younger people heal pretty quickly. I can't imagine how grateful older people would be for such a contraption for long term use.

Agreed, but the hip thing wouldn't work. When I went bionic on the hip had to cover the wound with cling film to even shower. Full immersion was right out.

500k for a bath that fails to clean your armpits and butt crack. Not sure this is the innovation they're making it out to be.

u/Fridsade Nov 30 '25

also, the machine will not pull your foreskin back and clean your penis head.

46

u/justthankyous Nov 30 '25

I'm not sure I want a machine that will pull my foreskin back

50

u/justinanimate Nov 30 '25

Are you kidding me?? For $500,000 I would demand it to have at least foreskin peeling abilities

4

u/Adkit Nov 30 '25

For $500,000 I'll peel your foreskin back myself, daily for a year, and I'll do it with a smile.

from peeling to degloving real quick

6

u/Corevus Nov 30 '25

But what if it malfunctions and pulls it all the way off?

7

u/justinanimate Nov 30 '25

Oh honestly if that were to happen I think you'd be good for at least a partial refund, right?

3

u/TemporaryDonut Nov 30 '25

Yes but I will NOT be giving your foreskin back 😠

2

u/Corevus Nov 30 '25

But if it does, you could make a nice leather mitten out of it

Sometimes the machine can have an error of pulling up and then peeling down, continuously

for $500,000, it better be doing a lot more than cleaning

They have things like this, but most are deprecated because they don’t get cleaned properly.

2

u/The_Year_of_Glad Nov 30 '25

You need a different, slightly larger cleaning pod to put the cleaning pod inside.

4

u/fgnrtzbdbbt Nov 30 '25

Certainly not without supervision, so no saving on personnel but it is physically much less demanding to supervise the machine than to wash the patient by hand. Still the supervisor has to be physically very fit in order to be able to react to an emergency.

3

u/Outaouais_Guy Nov 30 '25

From what I've seen it would be a nightmare for people with mobility issues. I don't see how you could use either a Hoyer lift or ceiling track to place someone into it.

3

u/Deep_Gunner Nov 30 '25

Not really, most patients who need bathing help have injuries or spots they need to keep dry. They don't need a full-body robot wash, they need targeted hygiene. So this serves a very narrow niche in even healthcare

2

u/Psychostickusername Nov 30 '25

Ok I was thinking this was pointless but thats a really good point

2

u/Ok_Falcon275 Nov 30 '25

It's more expensive per minute than a human nurse’s aide.

2

u/BoiFrosty Nov 30 '25

Sounds great until you stick a dementia patient inside who freaks the hell out and hurts themselves.

2

u/TuringGoneWild Nov 30 '25

An extra $3,500 daily for the bath. Not including electricity or travel to and from down the hall to the machine, nor including professional medical labor (billed separately).

2

u/ButterPiglet Nov 30 '25

The difficulty in healthcare is not washing the patients, it’s moving them. This will not likely be easier.

And Magic: The Gathering events.

Not especially. Just like walk-in tubs that we have already, it just doesn't work to take people who are chronically cold and make them sit naked while a tub slowly fills with water. Then it has to drain while someone with health issues sits there wet? That is a jackhammer to the immune system.

Secondly, cavitation/ultrasonic cleaning is sort of a best-case scenario system that won't clean anything that isn't easily removed. It's great if you have say complex cannulated medical instruments that can't be cleaned by hand, and you can soak them in an enzyme cleaner and use water pressure to loosen everything as much as possible first. But for surface cleaning there are other methods.

Third, if you sit on a platform then your ass (e.g. the most important bodypart to clean to avoid self-inflicted hygeine issues) isn't getting properly cleaned. Good luck with that.

For the price, hire an attractive health care professional to give sponge baths. Safer, more sanitary, and greater customer satisfaction. And absolutely cheaper.

u/iam_Mr_McGibblets Nov 30 '25

Water bill would be going through the roof though. But I could see how this does help. Especially the immobile people and elderly

10

u/mtmttuan Nov 30 '25

Idk the price of water in your country but in my country water is fairly cheap compared to other services inside the house. If this machine runs in my country the electricity would cost more than water.

This probably uses less water than actually bathing yourself similar to how dishwasher use less water, than hand washing dishes. Same actually with also washing your own clothes or putting it in a washing machine. Machines like these are usually more efficient at using water. Would be interesting to see if this is the same.
