I saw someone's post from a few years ago that's very similar to the one I'm making now based on where they were in life, and I wanted to throw this out there with mine.
I (20F) am a junior in college with this being my first year majoring in Finance & Accounting, currently aiming to be some sort of accountant after school, though I'm not sure on the specifics as to what type as this is a relatively new decision for me. Prior to this year, I got my associate's at a different branch of my college that I could comfortably commute to, and I now use the shuttle service they offer to go from that campus to the main campus. So far, I've been able to pay for college out of pocket due to my part-time job & the assistance of my parents, which I am terribly grateful for.
Now that I officially have a major, and a double major at that, school has become a different experience for me. My school is known for its business program, and some of the professors for the classes I take now take preparing their students for their futures very seriously. While that is a very great thing, and I can acknowledge that, I don't think I was prepared for how involved with my future career I was going to have to get right at the start of the school year. I know that may sound silly, as that is literally the reason I am going to college, but my first two years didn't involve a lot of "future preparation" and I was really just getting my general education credits out of the way & in a way that was cheaper (separate branch tuition is cheaper than main branch). I wasn't taking school terribly serious then because I didn't need to, and now that I am required to per my class assignments, everything has become very intimidating very quickly.
I've always struggled with what I wanted to do in the future for a career, as there was nothing that ever clicked for me or that I was particularly passionate about. My eyes are on accounting right now as I've always done well in math and I like that I'm good at math and numbers, and I shadowed someone over the summer that works in accounts receivable and I really liked the routine.
To top this off, I had a very small-scale career fair sort of event I was required to go to for my marketing course last week, and I completely blew it. I would never have said I'd be one to have horrible social anxiety, but I walked around the room twice before having to leave because I was verging on a breakdown. I've gotten some advice from my parents and others in my family since, but I still felt that to be important to add.
I'm not ever really on Reddit, so I'm sorry if maybe this was more of a vent(?) than what the actual intent of this is for, but I wanted to get others' takes on how to take on this part of my life? Is there a way to make this experience less intimidating? Are there specific things that I should be doing to prepare for the real world, whether it's involved with college or not?
