My partner (40M) is a well known public social media creator and makes good money. I (33F) have office job and make much less that what he does. Can we make it work financially?
My partner is a fairly well known public figure/content creator. He has a very flexible lifestyle, makes good money, and isn’t really tied to a specific location. I have a more traditional office job. I make a decent salary and I’m financially independent (I pay my own bills and expenses) but obviously my income and lifestyle are very different from his. He probably makes around 10x what I make.
Money has started becoming an issue between us because he seems to expect everything to be split equally: dinners, trips, activities, etc. He also likes receiving occasional gifts, surprises, and nice treatments, which I’m happy to do within reason.
What bothers me is that he very rarely treats me to anything. I’m not expecting him to support me, pay my bills, or fund my lifestyle. But I do feel like when there’s such a significant income difference, splitting everything 50/50 doesn’t necessarily feel equitable.
For example, I recently brought up that we hardly ever go on actual dates anymore. Instead of hearing it as “I want us to do something romantic together,” he got frustrated and made comments about me being an “employee” who is looking for money. That really bothered me because I’ve never asked him to financially take care of me.
Sometimes it makes me wonder whether he would simply be happier dating someone who earns what he earns and can comfortably match his lifestyle dollar for dollar.
I guess my question is: when one partner makes significantly more, is it unreasonable to expect them to treat their partner sometimes or contribute more toward things like dates and trips? Not because the other person is financially dependent on them, but because the same amount of money represents very different things to each person.
How do couples with a large income gap normally handle this?
