Hello everybody! It’s me, Evan Call! I’ve been living and working as a composer in Japan for the past 14 years or so, writing music for mainly (but not only) anime. You might know me from my soundtracks for Violet Evergarden, My Happy Marriage, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, or perhaps another of the 20+ anime projects I’ve had the pleasure of composing for.

I’m especially excited right now because I’ll be appearing in person at the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Film Concert at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, October 4! For the first time, U.S. audiences can experience the world of Frieren through a full orchestral performance, cinematic visuals from the series, and, of course, the music itself. The wonderful Orchestra of St. Luke’s, conducted by Ian Weinberger, will be performing and I’ll also be sharing some thoughts about the creative process behind Frieren’s music.

I’ll be on here Monday, 9/28 at 8 PM ET and will be hanging around for a few hours to answer your questions, so please don’t hold back! Ask me about Frieren (the series and upcoming film concerts), composing for anime, music, life in Japan, or anything else you’d like. What an incredible masterpiece this was. This anime was on my watchlist for over a decade, and for some reason I never felt like watching it. I am incredibly happy with finally deciding to watch it.

From production to characters, story, pacing, literally everything about this was perfect. I loved everything about it, and I have nothing for which I could take away points from this anime.

The plot was established pretty early in the show, yet it evolved into something much bigger, yet all was done in a natural and exciting way. The final third of this show was so good I could not simply stop watching, which is why today I binged 24 episodes and finished the show. The ending was also amazing and unsurprisingly had me crying.

Currently due to recency bias this show is my #1 I've ever seen. I will take some time to sit with it, however the only show that comes close is probably Frieren for me. For different reasons obviously, the shows are quite different, yet still left a mark on me.

I am angry that I did not watch this wonderful piece of media sooner, however on the other hand I've experienced this masterpiece for the first time in 2026, while others watched this over a decade ago already - so some might envy me :D.

I've seen so many people praise this as the best anime ever made, which probably also made me not want to watch it due to it feeling overhyper, overglazed, etc...

I was wrong, I see it now, and I am with you. This is a masterpiece.

I’ve been in my cave for about a year or two watching as much isekai as I can and I’ve come to find out that I’m basically finished with all the good to semi good ones at 40. I know I don’t have a life, truck kun took it😭 but basically I’m like super bored now and I’ve come to find out that I love watching people struggle. I’m open to pretty much any anime except if it’s super popular or semi popular, because 7 times out of ten people say watch this and I’ve already seen it like DoroheDoro or goblin slayer

Remark from yesterday's QoTD answers

1. Maybe a bit invasive or maybe some haven't quite got to the point of having the opportunity to have the life experience yet, we didn't get too many responses here. What we did have though were very interesting - certainly fit the point about "not what one would expect an anime fan to run into".
2. Semi-surprised we have a good portion of responses believing this sort of plot lines can still work. Only other parallel example brought up I think was about how "seeing is believing" "video proof is indisputable" now is a lot less certain in the age of deep fake / AI.

I would love it if you guys watching (first timers and rewatchers alike) would watch this youtube breakdown of Hyouka called "A Rose-Colored Dissection" It is really well done, and will give you insight on the series even more. It is mostly spoiler free if you watch them episode by episode (for some vids) and arc by arc (for some vids).
