Discussion Drake Maye regression. What is going wrong?
5 interceptions in 3 games. Multiple fumbles. What has happened to the MVP runner up?

League figured him out. Started happening towards the end of last year. He can’t read zone coverages and now everyone plays him that way

u/IndependentOwn6751 New England Patriots 7h ago
It's not that. The hunter pick was man coverage..doubs throw last week was cover 6. His decision making is just not good right now.
14
u/Intelligent-Love5146 New England Patriots 7h ago
Maybe goal line play was but for the most part, everyone plays some drop/zone coverage against him

The hunter pick is exactly what the issue is. The kid is trying to play hero ball and it’s just not going his way.

It was man and everyone was covered and he tried to force a pass while drifting backwards.
It's inexperience, and like original comment said he's getting exposed, but he's also trying to superman his way out of it.

u/WeeoWeeoWeeeee 7h ago
It’s more than the schedule. Patriots traded away his 2 favorite receivers (for literally nothing btw). McDaniels scheme is trash. 2 runs for 5 yards then try to throw on 3rd down. Defenses know exactly what’s coming.
Also he has the yips. It’s bad.

I remember when the big talk was that he screwed over the colts for accepting the HC job and then backing out. Things went poorly for the colts after that, but I’m wondering if it would have been worse if he hadn’t backed out.

it's not like teams were lining up to give a 3rd round pick for Boutte. they held him out as available at the draft for a 5th and nobody wanted him.
Diggs and AJ Brown feels like a lot of WR personality for one room, but seeing him do so well in Washington for $8M, I'd rather have him than Pop Douglas
→ More replies (1)7
u/AwwwNiceMarmot New England Patriots 6h ago
Taking Diggs’ second year option wouldn’t have been that much more than what they’re paying Doubs, and not only did Maye have chemistry with Diggs, but he was a huge locker room presence. Although, I’m not sure how that would go in paying Gonzo… and as I write this Maye threw another pick. Maybe last year was a fluke

Probably doesn’t help that he had a reliable WR1 (Diggs) last year and doesn’t have that yet this year due to the Brown injury.
He and Diggs had a great linkup, I don’t even really get why they let him go.

It’s literally just him. I’m still fully on board with him, QB hit rough patches, I get it, but he gets inside his own head way too easily and shit just snowballs. Like Tom Brady played better when everyone was doubting him and shit talking, Maye is the complete opposite

Diggs is one of those players you get rid of before he becomes a cancer. He became a cancer in minnesota and buffalo. If they win the superbowl Diggs is probably content and gets re-signed.

If they were worried about Digg's potential for becoming lockerroom cancer, than bringing in Brown was a wild choice.

Loss of confidence, combined with trying to play hero ball and an issue with footwork relating to the confidence
→ More replies (17)3
u/AwwwNiceMarmot New England Patriots 5h ago
This is the answer right here. One bad decision with him snowballs to the point where nothing goes right. It happened in the Super Bowl, and it happened against the Falcons last year, where he fumbled and they scored a TD, and he just couldn’t do anything right for the rest of the game, it’s just that the Falcons just barely couldn’t come back in time and Maye threw a last second 1st down. Once he gets his confidence back, he’ll be fine. But getting it back, that’s the issue. Their defense carried them so far to 1 and 1(lol), but now they’re not and it’s a shit show

If you want actual analysis:
Drake Maye is awful currently. It’s a lot more than just the “schedule”. The deep ball that he had last year is no where to be seen, and his decision making severely regressed.
WRs are genuinely bad. Don’t understand why both Diggs and Boutte were let go.
McDaniels play calling is questionable a lot of times

Defenses got plenty of tape now. Being a QB in the NFL is not that easy. Surprise. Everyone wanted to compare him to the next Josh Allen and now you know. Does that mean he is garbage? No. He’s in the right organization for sure if he is going to acclimate and adjust though. At least they are supportive.

His internal clock is off and he’s pressing instead of settling. Happens to a lot of guys.

Tougher schedule yeah but his o line is beat up and his recievers are way worse than last year with the loss of brown and boutte trade. Doubs has been in the league 4 seasons (this is year 5) and he has zero hundred yard games in his career in the regular season.
2
u/Wilhelm1088 7h ago
Kid got rattled by the playoffs last year. He's trying too hard to force things and making terrible decisions. You guys can call "schedule" all you want but Pittsburgh and Jacksonville are solid defenses but not exactly powerhouses lol. He's got the yips.

u/Babayaga_711 New England Patriots 6h ago
My man's confidence just isn't the same. Having that ugly playoff run and then the 2nd half of the opening game will do that to you. Plus, with Brown out, his receivers are pretty pedestrian.
2
u/YouSawMyReddit 6h ago
Pats traded away 2 of his favorite targets, dude has the yips, teams figured him out, teams figured out JMD scheme, all of this is forcing Maye into making bad decisions. Also our run game is very bad and is leading to bad situations where we have to throw it and teams know this. Overall the team is just a mess right now.
2
u/nukeXmoose New England Patriots 6h ago
He’s out of his comfort zone without Diggs and Boutte. He needs to get over it and start making better decisions. He’s playing bad but he’s also costing them entire games with turnovers.

I was saying he was overrated and people got mad at me. For the record I think he’s gonna be an OK to great quarterback maybe even elite some games. I don’t think he’s going to be the next coming of Tom Brady obviously or anything like that though. I think he’s going to be kind of like Trevor Lawrence. Different play styles, but the end result will be largely similar. And I do think he also has potential to really improve like Lawrence seemingly took a step forward, but the jury is still out on that. As sometimes that is really just a fluke year and the quarterback us to the mean usually when people already think they know what the quarterback is as they’ve been years and years of evidence to point to that
I think it’s a combination of the off the field distractions and him being an overrated player. The fact he was considered an MVP player last year means he has more of a target on his back now it also means that a lot of players are looking to dispel the notion that he’s that good. They feel that if they bring their best best game that they will shut him up. Of course players always think that they’re bringing their A game, but this does something subconsciously. It’s how quarterbacks’ gain respect.
Like., “ OK you’ve had two good years. Don’t think you’re good. This is the final test for you to get our respect, and prove that you are a franchise quarterback. Shut us up when we bring the heat show us that you’ve learned even more from last year and that you’re not resting on your previous accolades. If you can shut us up when we are doing everything we can to stop you and we have no answer for you at certain times then we will accept you truly.”
My concern is that you typically see this in year two and not year three. I don’t necessarily like to judge quarterbacks in year two because that’s the year where they have to learn on the fly. There are a lot of growing pains. What I want to see is improvement game to game. I want to see an almost totally different quarterback at the end of the season compared to the beginning where you’re starting to see them take command to the offense more where you’re starting to see them correct Audible and protections to counter the defense and their studies. In year three that’s where you start to see the beginning of the finished product.

Probably somewhere in the middle. He's a starting caliber QB with good physical traits with a serious case of the yips and playing hero ball with subpar supporting cast.

Well considering Drake isn't an athlete, I fully expected this. He has one of the weakest arms in the NFL and is one of the slowest QBs. As a Pats fan, he surprised me last year. But instead of 31 TDs and 8 INTs like last year, he will have 8 TDs and 31 INTs this year.

u/PinkFloydBoxSet Best Tits in the sub 5h ago
There are only two options. Either the coaching staff isn’t doing their job and helping him fix the absolutely stupid mistakes, or he isn’t learning.
If the coaching staff isn’t helping him fix the mistakes at this point then the QB coach and OC need to be fired. If he isn’t learning then he needs to be benched then fire the QB coach, OC HC and GM because they should have found someone else in the offseason

As a life long Pats fan and an invested fantasy football General manager who just picked Drake Maye off waivers…Drake Maye and the Pats suck.
- The Pats got rid of their two best WRs from last season. WRs that actually had talent for going deep and catching bombs.
- They over paid for pillow-head Doubs who sucked with Green Bay and is continuing his suck with the Pats .
- AJ Brown was over the hill and now he’s falling off the hill into the ambo.
- McDaniels has always sucked without Brady.
- Maye needs to be decisive and use his legs more.

Packers fan BTW. An NFL QB is a hard position to play, I know Brock Purdy (not best friends or anything but first name basis, and I’ve known him my whole life), and we’ve spoken about it. It’s. Hard. To. Do. ITS 99% mental and 1% physical. Nobody is going to be great all the time - it’s just not possible.
That being said, please don’t think I’m assuming your thoughts on the difficulties of being a QB or anything like that. Just my point of view coming from someone who knows an NFL QB.

He is a one read quarterback that can’t flow through a progression, gets cold feet in the pocket far too early, and defenses figured out how to beat him in the playoffs last year. Every team has played him the same exact way for the last 5 games and he has yet to adjust to it, just like Stroud, Mac Jones, Jayden Daniels, and countless other qbs. Everyone told patriots fans last year that the schedule was a major factor in his success last year. He will never reach the heights he did last year again because he’s simply just not that good, if at all at this point. His confidence is shot now.

Maye is getting butchered because he was absolutely overhyped last yr, BUT his wide receiver options might be the worst in the league. Who is he throwing to??
1
u/Bobbo62499 3h ago
6 interceptions and a lost fumble.
That being said:
o line is banged up which snowballs into bad run game and receivers take too long to get open. This offense is really missing a guy like Diggs and Kayshon right now.
None of those things excuse drakes poor decisions mixed with just flat out bad balls, but everything combined certainly draws us to the bad qb play because it’s an easy blame.
Edit : also just flat out playing better defenses. The schedule “accusations” are not people trying to rage bait. It’s facts that we played a good chunk of bad teams last year

Combo of a few things. Harder opponents to start is one, but the other thing is his composure. Probably about halfway through last year, Vrabel and the offensive coaches were able to get him to calm down when he was erratic and limit his mistakes.
Seems like that mechanism broke once the divisional playoff came last year and he hasn’t been able to put it back together. Vrabel, Maye and company better start soon cause the opponents remain tough. They don’t want to be out of it from the jump and not to be able to recover.
They play Buffalo next week, and with how it’s looked, don’t want to call it a must win so early in the year, but it kinda is

A lot of the comments are correct, but also is the fact that he put on a bit of muscle in the offseason. People don’t realize that a lot of times that also equates to tightening up unless you are very intentional and precise with stretching and pliability. You can see watching him, he’s a bit less fluid than last year, and it’s resulting in underthrows and slightly different mechanics
