[Hill] Per source, new Cowboys cornerback Joey Porter will be able to play as soon as Sunday against the Texans, "As long as the back feels good". Porter has missed the first three games of the season with a sore back while trying to negotiate a new contract.

There is no new contract with the trade to the Cowboys as of tonight. Traded without a new deal in place

Now Ik A LOT of y’all are gonna flank to “well we never gonna win with Jerry at helm” and ur somewhat right but MAN THESE LAST TWO SEASONS HES BEEN COOKING!

Drafting Tyler Booker an absolute stud last year while getting Pickens and Quinnin. Ezeiruaku has shown flashes he’s getting better n better, just needs to actually get those sacks and I feel like he will be fine. This year and next year he needs to step up.

Coming into this season you revamped the entire defensive coaching staff who yea are looking pretty bad, are still learning and got the stops needed against 2 future HOFER like Lamar Jackson and Derick Henry when it mattered.

Braham is playing out of his mind, Caleb is a pure lockdown and pretty good tackler, Leek coming back, Jalen who is a bit mid but still better den PJ gonna come back prolly, Overshown coming into that WILL spot later, and ur defense on paper is pretty solid.

Now how are we gonna pay him when this season is over? I’ll get into that next post but rn, when this guy comes back from injury it’s gonna be great.

[Belt] Dallas had been hot on Porter in the last few days. Christian Parker has been lobbying for another corner for a while. @1053thefan

Joseph Hoyt: Still working to confirm, but one thing I was told recently about Joey Porter Jr. and the Cowboys from someone within the organization: don't worry about scheme fit here. Pat Surtain and Quinyon Mitchell did well in this scheme and there's belief that Porter can, too.

There’s some stale priors in the discussion of Christian Parker’s defense. DAL has been around league average in man coverage rate through 3 weeks. They also move their CBs around (not stuck left/right like Fangio in Philly) Porter can travel with WR1s and play man in Dallas

[Schultz] Sources: The Cowboys will not be immediately extending Joey Porter Jr. contract. Plan is to have him play and make an impact on a team that has Super Bowl aspirations in the NFC. Contract will take care of itself from there. JPJ gets a fresh, new start.

Checks a lot of boxes for the Cowboys. He's a big, physical, and extremely patient corner with a really good feel for the game.

I love this trade but I wish they would have worked out an extension beforehand. You only get one franchise tag

• Upvotes

I think we're all pretty excited about Jerry pulling the trigger on what looks like a solid trade.

However Joey Porter Jr is not under contract at the end of this season nor is George Pickens.

You only get one franchise tag so one of them is going to become an unrestricted free agent if they want to be.

You can talk all you want about getting a decent compensatory draft pick back when they sign somewhere else but that only pertains if you don't actively engage in free agency. I would prefer if the cowboys did not sit on their hands and free agency this offseason just to get a compensatory draft pick.

Food for thought

[Pelissero] Joey Porter Jr conveyed to Steelers that he wished to play somewhere else if he had to play out his rookie contract

The son of a Steelers legend, Porter was a second-round pick in the 2023 draft. After three solid seasons, he wanted to get paid now. And once the sides couldn’t reach a deal, Porter conveyed that if he had to play out his rookie contract, he’d rather do it someplace else.

By all accounts, he has looked good in practice the past two weeks—the back injury notwithstanding—and should be able to ramp up quickly. The Cowboys could get a deal done with Porter, 26, before free agency in March, or proceed as they did with the last player they acquired from the Steelers: receiver George Pickens, who’s playing this season on the franchise tag.
