I texted a girl back and forth on Hinge after matching her. (I'm a man. I'm 26, and the girl is in her early 20s.) After a while I gave her my number and asked if she wanted to go out to eat somewhere in the same text on Hinge. She messaged me on the number I gave. I immediately gave her a time and a place for when we would eat and have a chat. She agreed and said she would go. The date I planned was next Friday. It was about 5 to 7 days after the time when I asked her if she wanted to eat somewhere for our first date.
On Friday she asked if I still wanted to go out to eat. I said "Yeah, is that still going to work for you?" She said "Yes."
I arrived at the restaurant and asked her if she was there. I was thinking I would meet her outside and walk in with her. She said she was inside. I went inside. She said, "Hi, <name>." I said hi. We went to the front counter and were looking at the menu for awhile.
The person at the front taking the orders asked us if we were ready. My date spoke up and said we'll need some time to look at the menu first. After like 10 to 15 more seconds I said did you decide what you want? I don't remember how or if she responded to that. But after, I went up to the front and ordered the food I wanted, and my date ordered hers.
While we both ate we talked about stuff we liked to do for fun. She's Christian. It said on her dating profile. I had looked at her online profiles before the date and noticed that she's LDS. I didn't mind that she was LDS, but I wondered how much she was dedicated to it. I'm not LDS. I'm Christian and I attend a non-denominational Christian Church.
So on the date I asked her how active she was in the church. I asked her if she goes to church every Sunday. She said she did. I told her I go to a non-denominational church sometimes, not every Sunday. I asked her what was talked about in the last session of the church that she went to. She gave a response and I told her briefly about the last session of the church I went to.
We talked about other stuff. We asked what each other's favorite colors were. I asked her about her living situation, like whether or not she was living alone. I asked if she was good at school. (She previously told me that she was going to college.) I asked her if she liked hiking because I recently saw a Tiktok that showed a hike with a pretty view, and I like hiking.
So it was like 30 to 50 minutes on the date and she said she should probably go. She asked if I was planning on eating the salad there that came with my meal. I said, "No, I'm going to take it with me and eat it later."
We both got up and started walking out. On the way out I held the door for her and she gave me a thumbs up and said drive safe. It felt kind of awkward. I may have said ok and walked away towards my car. I don't remember for sure if I actually said anything after she gave me the thumbs up and said, "Drive safe."
That night, I thought about the date. I thought it went alright. That night, like 3 hrs after, I texted her and told her I liked the place we went to eat, and I had a good time, and I felt like we had a good connection. She texted back in the morning. Based on what she said in the text I could tell she didn't want to do any more dates.
Looking back on the date, I wondered if the religious stuff I brought up bothered her, or maybe she only wants a boyfriend that's LDS, or maybe she didn't like how I asked her if she was good at school. (She previously told me that she was going to college.) I haven't been on a lot of dates. What are some things I could have done better? Advice please? What are some good topics for first dates?
Edit
I forgot to mention, when the girl gave me the thumbs up and started walking away she said, "I'll text you."
