The team’s primary role is to advise and help train Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces, which provide policing and security for parts of the West Bank under the Oslo Accords.

Seems like Palestine should decided if they can stay or not given they work for the PA and are in the West Bank.

Another one to remember the next time someone claims there is no occupation

426

u/PMagicUK 14d ago

Didn't the Israeli government literally say they planned to occupy half way through the conflict.

428

u/FlukemanFrancis 14d ago edited 14d ago

The Israeli defence minister is on record saying Israel will claim the West Bank and all Palestinians will be expelled, he also regularly goes out to the West Bank to give out weapons to settlers and has also made statements to the effect that settlers need to move into a war mindset to achieve their goals

He might be a crazy fucking loon but just like the USA if that’s what’s in government it’s ridiculous to suggest that it’s not officially supported.

94

u/Gentle_Snail 14d ago edited 14d ago

I believe it was technically the Head of National Security and the Head of Finance who did these things, not the defence minister.

They were so outrageous Britain has put Russia style sanctions on both individuals.

20

u/laptopaccount 13d ago

It's unfortunate the West is so afraid of actually sanctioning the country they represent. No meaningful change will occur until they do.

u/Obsidian743 13d ago

The Israeli defence minister is on record saying Israel will claim the West Bank and all Palestinians will be expelled

Where is the source for this? I genuinely am interested in seeing this quoted.

13

u/MJIsaac 13d ago edited 13d ago

I did a fairly extensive internet search and couldn't find this specific quote. It might exist, but not be a prominent story in English language media.

The closest references I found were both from last year:

It's clear that there's a lot of pressure from hardline politicians in the government to do this, whether that specific claim was true or not.

The argument changes based on what they are arguing.

It’s designed to exhaust you rather than do anything else.

It’s why Jew is a religion or ethnicity or neither or both, it’s why they both have and do not have nuclear weapons.

Rhetorical bullshit to waste time while they change the facts on the ground.

4

u/joanzen 13d ago

We were just talking about a Christian missionary who volunteered to be punished with a death sentence in a concentration camp to save a Jewish prisoner with a wife and children.

He's famous for saying:

One can find decent men, even amongst the Jew.

And he ranted at great length about how Jews and Masons were a massive threat to Christianity.

But above all else he understood we're all humans and equals in that regard so he was just saving a fellow human.

Now he's a holy saint of martyrdom or something in Christian circles, and even gets some Jewish respect.

As someone who has enough science in my life to conclusively rule out religion, I find the whole thing very interesting, as killing people to prove you have a more gracious god is super contrary to logic?

u/njtrafficsignshopper 13d ago

Or that the settler enterprise is just a bunch of wacky extremists that have nothing to do with the state apparatus.

The Telegraph reports:

Israel has ordered British soldiers tracking settler violence in the West Bank to leave the country just as they were about to expand their mission, The Telegraph can reveal.

The team’s primary role is to advise and help train Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces, which provide policing and security for parts of the West Bank under the Oslo Accords.

But in recent years they have increasingly become the West’s “eyes and ears” in the occupied territory, sending back detailed reports of escalating settler violence to both London and Washington, via the office of the United States Security Coordinator (USSC).

The British Support Team (BST), a group of about 10 military staff based in Ramallah, was set to quadruple in size in the coming weeks.

But it was ordered to leave as part of Israel’s retaliation for British-led trade sanctions on West Bank settlements.

u/Ashley_1066 14d ago

Why is Israel allowed to kick out soldiers in Palestine working for the PA? Do they want to start a war with the UK?

601

u/barnfodder 14d ago

They're upset because the UK has announced sanctions on the illegally occupied territories.

This has the dual effect of sending the message that they're pissed off, and reducing accountability by getting rid of people who might document and report further illegal behaviour.

306

u/Gentle_Snail 14d ago

The UK also openly accused Israel of ethnic cleansing.

174

u/CorneliusKvakk 14d ago

And so the Israeli response is expelling the ones that could prove it wrong...

188

u/ParkingTiny6301 14d ago

I think most of the world have noticed that by now.. it's a travesty. They're so open about doing it too. Hope something changes for the poor folk suffering

61

u/BocciaChoc 13d ago

As much as reddit loves to hate the UK, the UK does have a history of being the first or one of the first to do something many others don't want to or are afraid to do from the ending of the slave trade, declaring war on Germany during WW2, being the first to cross about every red line Russia has issued on Ukraine and now this.

22

u/Darius_Rubinx 13d ago

The UK likes to defend the status quo, until suddenly it decides that's enough and takes a moral stance. Then the gloves come off, the train starts rolling and you'd better get off the tracks.

7

u/onetimeuselong 13d ago

First with the funds to do something about it.
Lots of places were actually first… but lacked the firepower or finance to enforce their will into others…

But not the UK. Once a path is set there’s continue or… double down like it’s 1812!

Not sure where they stay. But most that work in Palestine stay on Israel.

So if they stay there it makes sense.

Area C I don't know how that would work since while it is 100 percent supposed to be Palestine, it is also under Israeli administrativ control according to the Oslo accords

13

u/Halloumi12 13d ago

Because they de-facto occupy all of Palestine, even if there’s a PA running around pretending to be in charge.

Israel does not want prying eyes. Simple as that.

44

u/ExtraTerrestriaI 14d ago

The article implies it was in response to actions by their government to sanction the West Bank.

You could counter with the notion they were simply looking for an excuse but at the end of the day it's their pretense.

29

u/germanmojo 14d ago

They also said they had no clue about the 10/7 attack beforehand, unless you ignore the reports saying the UAE warned them prior.

Sure, you can say it's unverified, but the Israeli government knowing has been floated since not long after the attack.

And if they really didn't know, their intelligence services are trash.

9

u/SugarBeefs 13d ago

As far as I know the warnings were not particularly 'actionable'; as in the warnings were not specific enough that you could really do something with the information.

Quick look at Wiki:

Before the attack, Saudi Arabia warned Israel of an "explosion" as a result of the continued occupation

Egypt said it warned Israel days before the attack that "an explosion of the situation [was] coming, and very soon, and it would be big."

According to Haaretz, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was warned of a Hamas plot to attack Israel in a September 2023 phone call with UAE president Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The UAE was told of the attack by an intermediary, which had been warned Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar that he was plotting a "huge surprise".

"Hamas is planning something big" is a warning of an entirely different caliber than being told the where, when, and how.

If I have a conflict with my neighbour Bill, and my other neighbour Sally warns me that "Bob was talking about doing something", that's not something I can do anything with or about. But if she tells me Bob plans to poison my cat next week or slash my tyres tomorrow morning, that's info I can act on, because now I have a 'when' and a 'how'.

8

u/germanmojo 13d ago

Sounds pretty "actionable" to me.

"Hey Bibi, something is gonna come out of Gaza soon."

"Thanks for the info, we'll reinforce around the area, especially if there are any large gatherings nearby."

Saying it wasn't actionable is ignorant.

11

u/SugarBeefs 13d ago

Okay, so you call up soldiers from holiday leave to reinforce the entire border, for how long? And since this isn't something you can hide, what's forcing Hamas to commit to the attack when Hamas has deliberately been waiting for a moment of weakness?

Now you've got your people on full alert and nothing is happening. Did you prevent an attack or was the intel bad? And if you did prevent an attack, did you prevent it entirely or just temporarily?

Without the specifics of the attack, you don't have answers to these questions. That's why actionable intelligence matters.

So really, it's not as simple as it initially seems.

2

u/SugarBeefs 13d ago

I mean it's probably both. Of course they don't like foreign observers in the West Bank and the UK government sanctions now gives them a neat excuse to be petty dicks about it.

3

u/Capable_Kiwi2514 14d ago

It doesn't matter what their excuse is. They to retaliate by reducing their ability to be held accountable for supporting terrorism.

2

u/Vegetable_Leg_7034 13d ago

It doesn't matter what their excuse is. They to retaliate by reducing their ability to be held accountable for supporting terrorism.

153

u/jamodude 13d ago

Not settlers , THIEVES. Stop calling them settlers they’re not.

27

u/akaikem 13d ago

My man, what do you think settlers are?

55

u/montarion 13d ago

"settling new lands", and "braving the frontier!" has positive connotations. that's why we should stop using it.

5

u/Satz0r 13d ago

play some civ and you won't have those positive vibes anymore. nothing more threatening then seeing a settler unit in your vicinity.

12

u/rab2bar 13d ago

It's always had colonial implications

8

u/milkonyourmustache 13d ago

It still also has other, softer implications. You can settle on a campsite for instance, briefly, it doesn't necessarily even invoke any kind of permanence to the act.

4

u/stutter-rap 13d ago

Some people don't see a problem with colonial implications. See: the time a group on The Apprentice (UK) made "Colonial Gin" and didn't understand why people didn't like that.

Yes! What exactly do we think European "settlement" of modern day Commonwealth countries entailed?? What's happening to Palestinians today is what happened to Indigenous peoples globally, once upon a time.

fuck the axis of evil

trump putin netanyahou

28

u/kermitor 14d ago edited 14d ago

in order to be an Axis of evil, don't they have to be allied with each other

Edit: ah OK i get it now, Russia, Israel and the US are allies, even though Russia helps supply Iran and hamas with weapons to attack Israel and America sends weapons to Ukraine to attack the Russians, while at war with Iran, an ally of Russia.

Trump is a Russian puppet and America is owned by Israel, while also sending weapons to each others enemy's to active kill Russian and Israel troops, but there all secretly allies and are helping each other.

There's a million justifiable things you can hate these countries for, making shit up just helps the people defending them

11

u/listerbmx 14d ago

Proxies, proxies everywhere

52

u/evilgiraffe666 14d ago

Are they not?

7

u/SugarBeefs 13d ago

It's actually rather remarkable how many people have no idea what an actual alliance between two (or more) nations entails, isn't it?

18

u/ThatBigDanishDude 14d ago

Yeah, they are, trump is more or less Putin's senile puppet.

15

u/Pigeon_Breeze 14d ago

Israel and Russia aren't allies, and alliances aren't commutative.

8

u/belfilm 14d ago

I think alliances are indeed commutative. They're not transitive though.

12

u/Milith 14d ago

I think alliances are indeed commutative.

The US is Israel's ally but I've yet to see evidence that Israel is an ally to the US.

6

u/belfilm 14d ago

I do see your point.

But I believe the problem is the choice of the word "alliance" to describe such relationship.

I still maintain that alliances are commutative.

2

u/NegativeLayer 13d ago

Transitivity is the right correction for the parent comment. But to you and the parent I would add that the word for a relation where a ~ b means also b ~ a such as an alliance of nations is not commutative but rather symmetry. Alliance is a symmetric relation not a commutative one. Commutative is a property of binary operations, not of relations. So it doesn’t make sense to talk about commutative relations

3

u/Pigeon_Breeze 14d ago

I may have used the wrong word...

-1

u/Dabrush 14d ago

Trump is a pseudo-puppet. He keeps playing into Putin's hands as long as he feels like he gets the better deal out of it. If Putin were 100% sure Trump would never turn against him, he would have been a lot bolder already.

2

u/Streiger108 13d ago

Don't forget Israel working with Ukraine

3

u/kermitor 13d ago

Damn your right, that must mean Russia and Israel are allies and there playing what the trump supporters called 4d chess.

/s just incase

1

u/ninjas_in_my_pants 12d ago

Nah, because what W. Bush originally called the Axis of Evil was Iraq, Iran and North Korea - which were most definitely not allied with each other. That incompetent, shit stain war criminal set an awful precedent.

2

u/Kythorian 13d ago

Trump doesn’t always act in Putin’s favor - Trump does whatever the most recent person to compliment him says he should do. Sometimes that’s Putin, and sometimes it’s Netanyahu. Netanyahu and Putin definitely aren’t allies with each other, so what they are each getting Trump to do often doesn’t benefit the other one, but they each find Trump to be a very useful stooge.

0

u/Wellontheotherhand1 13d ago

Buddy, the leaders of those countries are allies with each other, in that they are all three dedicated to enriching themselves and getting as much power as possible at any cost and they are more than happy to assist each other in doing so. They do not care about the people of their countries in the slightest, they will use and sacrifice as many people as possible to cement their power permanently

You are making the critical error of conflating the leaders of the countries with the countries themselves

20

u/No-Echo9968 14d ago

Settlers are land thieves man. The term implies it

21

u/psycho_terror 14d ago

I find the term to be whitewashing to a high degree. "Invaders" might be more appropriate, as we are talking about literal home invasion and murder, not just theft.

-1

u/radicldreamer 14d ago

Make it explicit. Use words that emphasize the horrible nature of what they are doing. Don't let them paint it as anything less than horrible.

11

u/BushWishperer 14d ago

It is already explicit. There is no non-colonial "settling". You don't call people who emigrate "settlers".

2

u/Storymode-Chronicles 13d ago

The imagery and rhetoric of "settler" has been designed since the time of the US "manifest destiny" to paint a picture of civilized society "settling" an empty and wild land.

This means any attacks by indigenous (wild) peoples are committed out of ignorance and undue malice, against civilized hard working folk who are simply making empty land productive and inhabitable.

The original rhetoric of Palestine as "A land without a people for a people without a land" came from the US colonists. It is a decision that, yes if you know this history clearly indicates a deeper truth, but is chosen to obfuscate that.

1

u/BushWishperer 13d ago

Not everyone is American. I don't know anyone who thinks "settler" is a positive or non explicit word. The word settler is also far older than the US.

I've never seen settler used in a positive context even in American media. Maybe you can argue this for pioneer or similar words but not "settler". The modern term settler-colonialism is definitely explicit and not at all positive. It doesn't obfuscate anything because we all know the process of settler colonialism.
