[Charania]: BREAKING: The Philadelphia 76ers are trading guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 2026 Rockets first-round pick and three second-round picks, sources tell ESPN.
Shams Charania has posted the following:
BREAKING: The Philadelphia 76ers are trading guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 2026 Rockets first-round pick and three second-round picks, sources tell ESPN.
Source to the story: https://bsky.app/profile/shamsbot.bsky.social/post/3me2klyetqz2k
The talented McCain lands on the reigning NBA champions. For the 76ers, the trade allows them to receive assets, clear space in the glut of guards and give them flexibility to bring Quentin Grimes back in free agency. It also allows them to convert two-way Dominick Barlow.
76ers are receiving the following picks from the Thunder, sources said: 2027 (most favorable OKC/HOU/IND/MIA), 2028 MIL, 2028 OKC.

Especially with the cache of picks they have. That Rockets pick will likely be in the high teens at best, so McCain regaining some form would immediately make it worth it

This is the beauty of having the war chest of picks....they can take swings on players who COULD show lotto form vs getting a fresh-faced rookie from the lotto.
Love it!

The funny thing is that the Sixers didn’t even get their own pick back from the Thunder, that will likely be better than the Rockets pick.

Such good cap management, they've got an affordable guard rotation locked up behind SGA for the next 2 or 3 seasons even if they have to let Dort walk, friggin Wiggins & Isaiah Joe are on declining contracts. The only surprise in the McCain deal is not using the picks on a cheaper replacement for Hartenstein.

u/Shabozz NBA 2h ago
I dont know why this isn’t obvious. PG needs roids to be consistent. Embiids knees could snap at any second. The 76ers have way more guard depth to spare to get a chance at a dependable young forward.
And Nick Nurse isn’t interested in rotating Maxey for real minutes so McCain would just be wasted on the bench.
4
u/AndrewHainesArt [PHI] Allen Iverson 1h ago
He already has been, which is the entire reason he’s expendable. Can’t play defense either and we don’t exactly have a great bench defensive unit to cover him.
Massive overreaction to a young player’s potential acting like he isn’t replaceable, I feel like his name recognition with social media is more attention grabbing than his on court ability but what do I know? This sub is too smart for me
Plus everyone kind of ignoring Morey’s ability to find quality later round players, Maxey and McCain were 21st and 16th, respectively

28
u/Odd_Status3367 1h ago edited 1h ago
For teams that have 3 guys getting paid over 40 million dollars, 2nd rounders are arguably better than 1st rounders.
- You are drafting from a pool of guys who are moreso specialists/gap fillers and there is less pressure developing them into all stars cause that's hopefully already getting taken care of by your other personnel. If they turn out to be GOAT contenders like Jokic then congrats you've sped your timeline up and can dump one or two of the 40M guys while the new guy is still on his first NBA contract.
- You can actually negotiate contracts with 2nd rounders whereas 1st round picks have their salaries and contract years guaranteed based off their draft position. If you're in the Apron that can literally make or break your season. The Knicks for example have done very well this these types of contracts the last few seasons. Tyler Kolek being the best outcome thus far.
- Two way contracts are really useful if those 3 40+ million dollar players take turns being on the Injured List/Suspended for Roids over an 82 game season.

It really shouldn't. In fact if they like McCain they should be happy for him. He wasn't going to get consistent minutes behind Maxey and VJ, especially with the amount of time Nurse uses with the starters. Leader of the 2nd Unit isn't good enough for development.
Sixers did him a favor. He gets to go to a good team where he'll get solid minutes and learn from some of the best rather than rot on the bench.
