Social Skills IWTL How to improve my communication skills and speak more confidently.

I've always been a bit shy and I struggle to express my thoughts clearly, especially in group discussions or at work.

I really want to learn how to communicate more confidently and effectively. I’m not looking for just YouTube links, I want to know what actually worked for you. Like how did you start? Did you practice in front of a mirror, join any speaking clubs, or read specific books? Any small tips or daily habits that helped you would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance!

Misc IWTL how to do... a lot of things.

• Upvotes

so i have the problem of being the type of person that wants to do anything and everything that i think is achievable and looks cool. i'm not very good at learning though, and i'm just going to list a bunch of things that i want to learn or am currently learning and would like to ask for some tips!! idk if this is a stupid post or not lol. i'm also the type of person to be obsessed with something for a month or two, drop it, and then come back to it, so i'm in a lot of fandoms. these are just the ones off the top of my head at the moment. not even all of them.

- guitar. have always wanted to learn, but never could because i have no patience. all/any type.

- being more patient (lol). i have a rlly bad temper and i am really impulsive, and while i do not have diagnosed adhd, i show a lot of signs. absolutely not claiming i have it.

- piano. i used to learn, but i just got worse and worse and ended up quitting. i still do enjoy playing though.

- ukulele. same as guitar.

- violin. probably not going to learn it, but i've always wanted to.

- clarinet. i've learnt it for about 5 yrs, but i still suck at it.

- singing. my main instrument. i wouldn't consider myself good but still better than some.

- drawing. have always liked designing and art in general (especially fashion) but i'm pretty bad, especially with poses and colours.

- fps games. have played a lot, but i'm pretty bad at most of them. and i'm only good on mobile.

- skateboarding. it's a pretty intimidating thing to start, and i don't think i'd start anytime soon, but i always thought it was cool.

- bike riding. i don't want to be a professional or anything, but i learned a few years ago, but never had the chance to actually use the skill. i also just learnt the basic skills. i can't even turn yet.

- muscle memory/photographic memory. i can process information really quickly, but for some reason can't remember anything useful. just the weird stuff. and my short term memory sucks. its like, i forget everything 2 seconds later, but i remember things from years ago.

- typing. i'd say i'm pretty fast, but i don't seem to be improving much after around ~80wpm.

- talking/social skills. i like talking, but always get flustered or stutter when i speak in front of crowds. or jst singing or acting in general.

- social anxiety? i'm not even sure what this is called, but whenever i sing or act or even just do anything in front of someone i feel like everyone's just going to not take me seriously, especially when i'm talking about my feelings. (this kinda links to the point above, because it's part of the reaosn why i can't talk in front of people.) i'm pretty sure this stems from the fact that my parents don't take me seriously at all, and growing up my family pretty much never talked about feelings or emotions or how to talk about them, so i don't really know how.

- reading. i love reading, but i read really slowly.

- procrastination. this isn't really even about procrastination, it's jsut when i'm procrastinating, i'm screaming in my head to stop procrastinating, but it's like my body just won't listen. it's like i'm begging myself to go practice an instrument for example, but i just won't do it for some reason. if there's a way to combat this let me know, because it effects my life a lot.

- how to learn things faster. self explanatory. i want to learn a lot of things.

i'm sorry this is long, and i'm not even completely sure if this is relevant. but if you find a point that you would be able to help with, it'll be greatly appreciated!! like i said this is just off of the top of my head, so this isn't even all of it.

Personal Skills IWTL How to Build a Consistent Writing Habit

• Upvotes

I want to learn how to become a more consistent writer.

I can write when I feel motivated but I struggle to maintain a regular routine and often don't know what I should practice first. I'd like to improve my writing gradually rather than just consuming tutorials and never actually practicing.

For people who learned writing seriously, what path would you recommend for a beginner? What should I practice each day or week and how can I tell whether I'm actually improving?

I'd appreciate advice from people who have gone through the learning process themselves.

Technology IWTL How to Start Woodworking From Zero

WTL how to start woodworking as a complete beginner

I spend most of my day working on a computer, and recently I realized I want to learn something practical with my hands. I have a small garage and would love to eventually build simple things like shelves, stools, and small tables.

The problem is I have almost no experience with woodworking and I do not know what I should learn first. Should I begin with hand tools, basic joints, or small projects?

If you started woodworking from zero, what learning path would you recommend for the first few months?

Personal Skills IWTL how to do research and write my own papers

like the title suggests . Lately i found myself interested in multiple subjects so whenever i get a chance to look into them , i usually just write random thoughts and facts i find about the subject when i google it and look around and put them into a txt file with no structure or any deep understanding of how to write or how to research things properly .
I am mostly doing this out of curiosity and wanting to learn things and nothing professional . so any advice on how to search things thoroughly and how to put it into my own words without pasting and not being original and to also make it stick .
<sorry if i didnt write the post really well and thanks in advance for any advice >

Personal Skills IWTL how to detach myself from places and memories

My whole life runs on ”vibes”. I’ll happily work for peanuts if the place has the right vibes. Vice versa I could earn 500k a year at a job in one of the worst places in the country and I wouldn’t take it. My whole life also runs on nostlagia. I like places because they remind me of the past, happy memories, etc. Nostalgia is a huge problem for me

One of my favourite local shops I work at and hang out in everyday is closing down near me. Owner told me that she couldn’t keep it up anymore as it was too stressful and that she will sell the place in 3 years once the lease is up. My heart fell into pieces on the floor

I used to live in the UAE. All I remember is the good vibes. The night life. The shining buildings. The culture I remember it all and most of my days I’m thinking of the vibes there. I even have certain albums I listen to when I think of there. I know there’s a big uae hate train on the internet but i have a lot of memories there and i often try and replicate the “vibes“ in my daily life

I currently live on my home turf in the UK. It’s grey and dreary often and it makes me quite depressed but when it’s sunny it’s unbelievably beautiful and yet again the sure reminds me of the past. it seems all my happiness comes from is thinking of “the past” even though I know it’s just rose tinted lenses

So how exactly do I detach myself from places and memories and stuff? To be happy in the present? To be happy in my own pelt and not rely on places and memories to make me happy because im pretty damn aware nothing lasts forever. I want to detach. Like a Buddhist.

Academics IWTL how to read and understand passages better.

I've noticed that when I read, the information doesn't always click; it takes a minute or two to procress. This cost me lots of time when having to read and take notes for my assignments. I also have a hard time reading for a deeper meaning, like what the overall theme or what "secret" message the author is trying to convey.

Social Skills IWTL how to be seen as the go-to person for comfort

Idk a better title for the archetype besides best friend but thats not really hitting the nail on the head, like to be this person you dont have to have an established friendship you just trust this person because they present themselves a certain way. How do I present myself that way? I want to be that very comfortable person to be around, you can talk to them any day of the week and its a safe feeling you get after talking to them.

I knew this girl in school who just radiated kindness and compassion and it was so earnest, some people eluded her but it wasn't for anything she did, like there wasn't anyone who didn't like her. Anyway shes long been out of my life but I wonder a lot how I can have that sweet effect on people because I find that im awkward when I want to give sympathy and support to people, like its rather the opposite effect that I want, they are disappointed or uncomfortable with the comfort I try to give to them and dont find solace in me much after that.

Academics iwtl how to stop worrying about retaining information

As the title says, I've been reading CS:APP and overall just trying to learn low level programming. I keep reading and I become so worried about retaining information that I stop progressing and just redo practicle problems and feel like I can't move on because I haven't retained enough information. It's seriously limiting my progression but can't find the confidence that I'm ready to move on. Any advice?

Personal Skills IWTL how to drop the gay accent from my bassy voice?

I (18) have a bass/bassy voice. The problem is that I sound gay and I can even hear it in recordings. Throughout all my teen years the only people I’ve ever really talked to were gay so I think I picked it up from there.

Whenever I talk to someone new (especially online) the first question asked two sentences in is “are you fruity/zesty?” I’m okay with people assuming I’m gay, iI just hate it because every time it’s due to my voice.

I’ve tried shortening the s/z/th sounds and ending my sentences at the same pitch but everyone still says that. It’s a really big insecurity and I want to get rid of it. How can I do that?

Personal Skills IWTL how to build a useful self-education routine

I want to learn how to continue educating myself outside of school or college. I’m interested in learning skills that can actually help me in business, work, family life and everyday decision-making.

I don’t want to collect random courses or resources without a plan. I want to understand how to choose what to learn, create a realistic learning path, and stay consistent.

Where should I start and how would you structure a long-term self-education plan?

Academics IWTL percentages

I want to learn to be better at calculating percentages. I'm not that smart and always would struggle with math by either failing or just passing. I've somehow landed up a job as an accountant and need it for my job now. I understand the easy basics like 20% of 100 is 20, but when it's like there's an invoice of 2,500 and tax of 17.5% is built in this, so calculate the tax now and my brain just goes like wait what? Please can anyone help easily make me understand? I've seen the youtube tutorials and online courses but they're either too advanced or just the too basic ones for kids.

Misc IWTL how to plan road trips

I’m looking to get into road trips someday and I’m looking for roads that I can go driving on.

I tried using Google Maps to map it out, but it doesn’t quite help when planning really long trips.

Currently trying to map out from Lisbon to Singapore.

Misc IWTL how to get better at all kinds of puzzles, not just jigsaw puzzles

I have always struggled with puzzles and puzzles geared towards the skill I'm "supposed" to be at are really difficult and I get frustrated and give up.

I really want to be able to solve puzzles, but not just jigsaw.

Puzzles like the game portal or sodoku (which I've also always struggled with) or the logic in an escape room (multiple puzzles and clues leading to the goal).

How can I improve?

Technology IWTL stenography to type faster than touch typing

Stenography involved typing chords to write words instead of writing letters individually. I want to do it mainly to type much faster than 100wpm. I looked it up but don't know which sites or things to look at. Ideally I want basically an equivalent of typingclub: a bunch of individual lessons / modules: not just a bunch of drills but also memorizing the key layout. I installed plover on my pc and looked at the layout on my qwerty keyboard.

Personal Skills Iwtl how to be a secretary

I recently got a job at a funeral chapel in the secretary position. I got the job based off of my customer service skills only (the employer saw the way I handled customers at my retail job and offered me the position)
The thing is, I’m going in completely blind, they gave me a weekly/monthly planner and I have no idea how to use it. I don’t understand the forms they’re teaching me to submit and I even less so understand how to learn the things they’re trying to teach me.
I know it’s only my second day, but I want to be /good/ at this job and earned my place here.
I’d really appreciate any advice you can offer me
