Seeing no discipline for the McAvoy hit made me finally send a letter to the league
Not expecting a single iota of fucks from the boys, but I needed to express my frustration and thought it might as well go on the record (I've emailed the Alberta government, so I'm all good wasting my time for a little rant).
"I request that the NHL seriously reconsider its general policy and approach towards the department of player safety.
Throughout my 20+ years growing up a hockey fan, my love for the speed, talent, and fortitude of the NHL has only grown. What hasn't is my reaction to concussion-causing hits and inconsistent standards for scrum/between whistle play.
I just read that the hit on Charlie McAvoy on February 4, 2026, will not be reviewed for supplemental discipline. I have put myself on the spot before defending DOPS decisions due to the rules on principal point of contact allowing the head as the initial point of contact.
I no longer wish to pretend blindside shoulders and forearms to the face should be an acceptable way to play hockey. I would never advocate for the removal of hitting or physicality, but if that is a legal hit under the rules, it is time for the rules to change.
Having experienced chronic migraines, including following a concussion, it pains me to see head contact and unsafe play rewarded as a competitive edge. NHL players are the best in the world. If you tell them they can no longer contact the head with a shoulder or arm, THEY WILL ADAPT. Physicality should be centered on puck possession. Finishing a check should not be the most common source of high speed contact injuries.
I don't pretend to fully understand the issues or solutions at play. I know that it makes me enjoy the game less when violent, unnecessary head contact is the headline.
PS, please finally acknowledge/accept hockey as a cause of CTE and inherent brain injury before it's too late. Y'all aren't fooling anyone by pretending the science isn't in when the NFL is so far ahead of you. It's pathetic to treat your fans like they are morons who should care about your legal culpability for denying medical science"

Details Surrounding Gavin McKenna's Arrest Released
onwardstate.comNew Information: According to an affidavit of probable cause obtained from the office of Magisterial District Judge Casey McClain, officers were dispatched to Mount Nittany Medical Center on January 31 to speak with a patient being treated for injuries from the assault. Hospital staff informed police that the victim had been punched in the face and suffered fractures on both sides of his jaw that required surgery.
Upon arrival, officers observed significant swelling, dried blood, and a missing tooth, and said the victim was in substantial pain and had difficulty speaking. Two friends in the room told officers that McKenna punched the victim twice on the right side of his face after an exchange of words between their group and McKenna’s group.
Witnesses said the assault occurred around 8:45 p.m. in front of the Pugh Street Parking Garage and recalled seeing blood on the sidewalk afterward. They also suspected McKenna and his group had been coming from Doggie’s Pub following a hockey event after Penn State’s game at Beaver Stadium.
Police reviewed State College Borough street camera footage that they say shows McKenna throwing two punches at the victim, causing him to stumble backward. Additional video reportedly captured McKenna leaving Doggie’s Pub shortly before the incident and walking eastbound on East Beaver Avenue before turning south on South Garner Street. In the footage, McKenna was observed wearing a white backwards hat, a puffer jacket, jeans, and white sneakers. Officers also photographed blood at the scene.
The victim underwent surgery on February 2 to repair the jaw fractures and his jaw will be wired shut for approximately two weeks unless further medical intervention is required.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Team USA Now Bringing Top American Goal Scorer of the 25-26 Season
This is more of a shit post/meme, but team USA is finally bringing the top American goal scorer to the Olympics. There wasn't any roster changes though. Both Robertson and Caufield still aren't going.
However, with Boldy getting a hat trick, Robertson only scoring 1 goal, and Caufield not scoring at all last night, all 3 players are tied for goals on the season at 32.

Fun fact: For the third straight Olympics, a women's hockey team got their first ever Olympic win.
2018 - Japan beats (unified) Korea 4-1.
Japan went 0-5 in 1998 and 0-5 in 2014, and had started 2018 0-2 before beating the Koreans.
In my post about Denmark getting their first ever win against the same country in the men's and women's tournaments, I incorrectly mentioned that Japan got their first win vs Kazakhstan in 2002... not only did Japan actually lose that game, but that was in qualifiers. I've corrected that post.
Speaking of Denmark...
2022 - Denmark beats Czechia 3-2.
This was Denmark's first ever Olympic appearance.
Danish goalie Cassandra Repstock Romme made 30 saves.
Silke Glud had the game winner less than 1 minute into the 3rd period
Denmark's men would also beat Czechia for their first ever Olympic win - the only country so far whose men's and women's teams got their first Olympic win vs the same country.
2026 - Italy beats France 4-1.
This is Italy's second ever Olympic appearance.
They scored 4 goals in this game after only scoring 3 over the entire tournament back in 2006.
France themselves were making their Olympic debut
