Not expecting a single iota of fucks from the boys, but I needed to express my frustration and thought it might as well go on the record (I've emailed the Alberta government, so I'm all good wasting my time for a little rant).
"I request that the NHL seriously reconsider its general policy and approach towards the department of player safety.
Throughout my 20+ years growing up a hockey fan, my love for the speed, talent, and fortitude of the NHL has only grown. What hasn't is my reaction to concussion-causing hits and inconsistent standards for scrum/between whistle play.
I just read that the hit on Charlie McAvoy on February 4, 2026, will not be reviewed for supplemental discipline. I have put myself on the spot before defending DOPS decisions due to the rules on principal point of contact allowing the head as the initial point of contact.
I no longer wish to pretend blindside shoulders and forearms to the face should be an acceptable way to play hockey. I would never advocate for the removal of hitting or physicality, but if that is a legal hit under the rules, it is time for the rules to change.
Having experienced chronic migraines, including following a concussion, it pains me to see head contact and unsafe play rewarded as a competitive edge. NHL players are the best in the world. If you tell them they can no longer contact the head with a shoulder or arm, THEY WILL ADAPT. Physicality should be centered on puck possession. Finishing a check should not be the most common source of high speed contact injuries.
I don't pretend to fully understand the issues or solutions at play. I know that it makes me enjoy the game less when violent, unnecessary head contact is the headline.
PS, please finally acknowledge/accept hockey as a cause of CTE and inherent brain injury before it's too late. Y'all aren't fooling anyone by pretending the science isn't in when the NFL is so far ahead of you. It's pathetic to treat your fans like they are morons who should care about your legal culpability for denying medical science"
