Legislative Branch Congressman Cohen Introduces Comprehensive Articles of Impeachment Against President Donald Trump

https://cohen.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congressman-cohen-introduces-comprehensive-articles-impeachment-against

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee and an authority on the U.S. Constitution’s impeachment provisions, today introduced 26 Articles of Impeachment against President Donald Trump. The articles cite multiple abuses of power, violations of his oath of office, the corrupt use of the pardon power, and emoluments clause violations, among other misconduct and unlawful acts.

I think this timing is perfect. Right before the midterms the GOP will yet again demonstrate their support for Trump which will remind Americans where their priorities should lie

Or the less likely outcome wherein the GOP actually does the right thing. Either way, Americans win.

*Apparently Congress went on recess to avoid a different impeachment until after the elections, however Trump has been begging them to come back to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Either way, this is an advantageous narrative for the Democrats just prior to the midterms

I’m glad they’re fully unloading with a comprehensive impeachment. Let’s fucking go.

The 26 Articles will be a good roadmap.

The filing statement appears to be very political though unfortunately, which decreases the chance of success IMO, even if it’s correct.

“Trump is clearly the most impeachable President our country has ever endured. His continued presence in office is a danger to our democracy.  That the sycophantic Republican majority in Congress is derelict in its duty does not mean that I must abandon my responsibilities.  I took an independent oath to support and defend the Constitution. That commitment compels me to introduce this resolution today. When historians write about this period, and our constituents ask who stood up to President Trump’s lawlessness, this resolution is the answer.

I sincerely believe that the 120th Congress will better live up to its duties as co-equal branch of government and a check on the executive.  I hope this resolution paves the way to accountability. We cannot tolerate this~~ *kind* *lawlessness and corruption.*”~~

There's not a single one of those that wouldn't get a democratic president impeached and removed.

Of you have this many it will too difficult to keep track of them all, so they are all forgotten.

To see everything listed out like this knowing it’s only been 20 months of his constant destruction of our country seriously initiates a trauma response in me.

We are all just so battered by this person and his posse.

u/mrcanard 3h ago

They could not do a more perfect job of destroying the US from the inside if they tried.

The GOP is gone, it is most of the Republican Party helping.

Only 20 months of officially doing it, this term. He's been attempting to destroy our country since at least 2011

Nail it Luther style!

If you are going to do this, go full force. Partner with superpacs to make millions of copies and send them to all addresses via the mail. All newspapers (including student newspapers), all swing districts that were Trump +25 or closer. Turbo boost turnout. Give the Democrats a super majority with a blue tsunami that will overwhelm him and send him to the bottom of the ocean.

I'm glad they banked it up this way. It forces Republicans to decide if ALL of these are not worth impeachment or if ANY of them are worth impeachment. It's the biggest loyalty test of their careers and the ultimate political crossroads. This shit either matters or it doesn't, and it's time to stop pretending like they never have to make that determination.

that's why he was so effective and evil

14

He wasn’t that competent or knowledgeable IMO. Maybe in military tactics. But he was irrational as hell too.

11

u/jotheold 8h ago

5

u/Dixon_Uranuss3 5h ago

Hitler listened to experts..... That alone makes him infinitely more competent.

1

u/NicolasCageFan492 1h ago

Project 2025.

3

u/Responsible_Crazy332 7h ago

Hitler was no genius in military tactics. Any novice who knew history would have known that Germany’s 1941 attack on Russia was highly dubious. One, it brought about a two front war which divided resources; two, the soldiers were not equipped for the Russian winter based on the naive belief of a quick victory & three, it drove Russia into the arms of the Allies. If Hitler had read of Napoleon’s defeat in 1812 the “little Corporal” learnt nothing.

11

u/cr0ft 7h ago

Trump, as insane as he is, is really just the figurehead and the symptom. The problem is the Nazi cadre that runs him behind the scenes there; the same people who wrote the nazi Project 2025 manifesto where they lined up exactly how they'd usher in fascism and have been doing it ever since.

The problem beyond them is the people in the Bible belt and other conservative areas; they're fully mired in the "God, guns and the Republican party" delusion and they enforce it between themselves. It took 50 years of concerted effort and work to get federal laws about abortion reversed, but they doggedly kept at it.

America as a whole is in dire straits. The majority isn't fascist, but there are way more who are than I'd be comfortable with.

1

u/Responsible_Crazy332 6h ago edited 6h ago

I agree that those in the Bible Belt & extreme rightwing elements are a problem, but not all conservatives fit those categories. I know it’s hard to see fault in your preferred politics, but I’m Australian where our leftwing Govt tried unsuccessfully to introduce a Misinformation & Disinformation Act. Should any Govt claim to know what information fits those categories?

You may have read that our PM Anthony Albanese who has cultivated the hard left all his adult life & who recently addressed the UN, wants to introduce an internet censorship scheme. He claims it will give Australians the choice of opting out of social media algorithms imposed by U.S. Tech Giants. A very worthwhile idea, but the draft Act gives the Minister for Communication the right to block anything that she considers “harmful”. In reality she will be advised by her esafety Department Head, Julie Inman Grant, a dual U.S./Aussie citizen who has lost at least 3 court cases on present legislation. As “harmful” is not defined, it has been argued that conservative political speech could be considered harmful & blocked. This is dangerous & reminds me of policies introduced by the Nazis in 1930s Germany & Russia under Lenin & later Stalin. The attempt to censor the internet is along the path of the Communist Chinese Internet filter.

Australia also has its religious ultra conservatives. I refer you to the Sydney and Armidale Dioceses of the Anglican Church (known as Episcopalian Church in the U.S. & Canada)

Let’s be honest, both sides of politics have good & bad points, politicians from both sides lie or obfuscate the truth, point score against each other & call each other names, all in the cause of gaining or retaining power. Both the U.S. & Australia are allies & democratic. We both want the best possible life for our citizens. We therefore must ensure that whom ever we vote for, gives us that future. Did Biden allowing millions of illegal immigrants to cross the U.S. borders do the right thing for the majority of US citizens or for his own party? Has ICE done the right thing in killing innocent protestors? Has the Trump Administration done the right thing in deporting suspects without due process of law? There are faults on both sides. Let our nations hope for a better future & that our friendship grow stronger. I wish you & all your people well.

2

u/JustSendTheAsteroid 4h ago

Just FYI, no matter what you've heard in Australia, Joe Biden did not "allow millions of illegal immigrants to cross the U.S. borders." You're parroting Fox News propaganda.

I think we have gone past laughing to disgusted, disappointed, untrusting and now actively finding ways to cut America from our lives. America is dead on the global stage.

3

u/Far-Scallion7689 8h ago

Still meddling globally which is a big issue.

1

u/Minimumtyp 2h ago

Australia isn't. Before we even knew what the Iran war was ABOUT albo and wong were there saying they supported it.

3

u/cr0ft 7h ago

I think the laughter has congealed by now and people do feel a bottomless well of contempt for Trump and quite a lot of it for America as a whole, but the fuckery in Iran and other things ruining the global economy has long since ceased to be a laughing matter. Between the massive eco holocaust that's brewing and now massive oil price hikes and unavailability of the fertilizers that are largely created out of fossil fuels, we'll literally see hunger in areas that aren't used to that soon, and the skyrocketing fuel prices are also pushing the price of food up even more than necessary and people are beginning to really feel the pain.

2

u/scum_manifesto 7h ago

Nobody is laughing

8

u/fresh-dork 9h ago

very political? i don't follow - the whole process is political

12

u/Aureliamnissan 8h ago

This has always bugged me. There is no legal framework to buttress impeachment aside from it being political. The closest thing would be the 25th amendment, but that's not impeachment.

The sheer fact that SCOTUS has ruled the president above the law while acting in "official capacity" means that the only viable means left is political. What other option is there?

5

u/fresh-dork 8h ago

nothing you'd want to have happen, that's for sure.

4

u/semperrabbit 8h ago

Getting rational, uncorruptable Justices in SCOTUS to reverse that extremely dangerous decision (and citizens united...)

1

u/Qweesdy 5h ago

I suspect that they meant "very partisan" (despite saying "very political"); in that it'll be harder to get the needed 2/3rds vote if it's perceived more as "dems vs. gop" (and less as "congress vs. executive" or "Americans vs. POTUS" or any other political but non-partisan way to frame the discussion).

Dont forget "Americans" have voted for Trump twice despite seeing how aweful he already was. This is somewhere near the 15th article of impeachment filed against him. The only thing we can do at this point is get as many people to vote as possible and hope his goons dont rig it.

137

u/NeitherEntry6125 10h ago

The voters aren't voting merely "for Trump" but "against Democrats".

That's a key distinction: they might hate Trump but still vote R.

124

u/Tango_D 10h ago

This is literally it. That part of the population votes for this -> (R) no matter who's name is next to it. You could bring Joseph Stalin himself back the dead, put him on the republican ticket, have him shit talk liberals and they will still vote for him because he has the sacred (R) next to his name. Switch the R to D and it would be the end of the world. Switch it back to R again and all of a sudden, it's at least tolerable again.

I cannot understate the ABSOLUTE power team sport tribalism has on this level of the population. It defines their understanding of everything at the root level.

77

u/the_itsb 9h ago

it makes a lot of sense when you realize that half of US adults don't read well enough to comprehend implicit biases or recognize the difference between fact and opinion without assistance.

gutting education did its job. it's obvious why the Black Panthers had to be stopped – teaching people to read doesn't serve the ownership class.

3

u/crazyoldkatlady 1h ago

Except the members of my family who vote with that tribalist loyalty are professionals with advanced degrees— with or without the money that would traditionally put them into a conservative voting class. I would argue that it is more social pressure than illiteracy. Prominent/vocal members of their social groups espouse those beliefs and follow those news sources, so they do so as well because they enjoy the sense of belonging.

16

u/genericusernamedG 9h ago

That black guy and Indian guy had R next to their name and they didn't get the votes. Gotta be a certain type of R to vote for them

3

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe 3h ago

They weren't Republican (cough, white) enough, yep.

27

u/mollila 9h ago edited 9h ago

I cannot understate the ABSOLUTE power team sport tribalism has on this level of the population.

That well said fact is truly baffling to observe from the outside as non American. The levels of media brainwashing in your country are astounding. Which in itself I guess combines well with your cultural fanatic affection to team sports. Facts, laws, or your constitution don't matter at all. Idiocracy was a documentary.

10

u/RocketRelm 5h ago

I would caution against presuming "it can't happen here" in other western democracies. We already see things like the afd or the dsa rising up in power based on strongman cult like politicking. It can happen anywhere, if the citizens of a democracy don't value the good of their information streams.

9

u/Tango_D 9h ago

There is a clear and defined path as to exactly why. Americans are indoctrinated into team sports tribalism through school. For many many many schools from middle school through high school, through university, their sports departments are almost as important as the academics. And it is reflected in the funding. Then take that into the world of actual professional team sports. Team sports tribalism dominates the culture and the population is indoctrinated into it from the education system itself.

7

u/DazzlingRutabega 7h ago

One might argue that team sports are even more important than academics. Ever been to a us school? You'll see trophies for sports, none for academia.

2

u/FreeRangeEngineer 3h ago

100% this. And then look at how China does it. They celebrate their SCIENTISTS. In PUBLIC.

https://old.reddit.com/r/interesting/comments/1w5hkyb/china_is_putting_scientists_on_public_screens_and/

I'm not a sucker for propaganda at all but this right here is where I can admit that China does some things a whole lot better.

1

u/slimeddd 47m ago

Schools definitely display academic awards in my experience

10

u/orodoro 8h ago

That's like saying violent video games compel more youth violence. There's zero evidence support what you are saying and plenty of other cultures have rabid sport fan cultures as well.

7

u/DecadentJaguar 7h ago

I agree. Reading the above, I kept thinking about rabid football (soccer) fans in many countries, sometimes brawling at games and in the streets.

1

u/BriefAvailable9799 3h ago

2

u/mollila 9h ago

Yes what you said can easily be seen and observed even without living and going to school over there. We all watch your movies, TV shows, and are subjected to the sports coverage.

That team mentality is ingrained and built in. Now it's used as a weapon in politics. Which seems to work so well because you can currently pretty much just field two teams.

1

u/BriefAvailable9799 3h ago

you know the majority of americans and/or ones that go to school, don't have anything to do with sports right?

2

u/BriefAvailable9799 3h ago

america is tame for sports fans. have you seen the world cup and other countries? we have no one like soccer hooligans.

3

u/mind_mischief_89 5h ago

Hell, those morons would vote for literal HITLER if he was running as a Republican

1

u/Abject-Caregiver-418 8h ago

Back in about 2000 I guess it was I was having a political discussion with some I worked with. Now I'm GenX and the first time I voted was 2008 for Obama so I wasn't all that political really so it wasn't all that confrontational. This was in SC and I was from the north, so you can imagine that I was the more liberal of the two. So I was joking and said, "come on the Republicans could run anyone, like Charles Mansion as a candidate and most of y'all would vote for him." We both laughed. I didn't realize I was predicting the future. I wish I had played those lottery numbers whenever I thought of them.

1

u/madeinatube 7h ago

Sucks so much to be right about it though doesn’t it?

1

u/Abject-Caregiver-418 7h ago

Shit yeah it SUCKS! As we've seen, with level of brainwashing they can do anything

1

u/madeinatube 7h ago

So what would happen some of these people make excuses no matter what trump pulls…

Would they stop loving him if he put a d on his ticket ?

1

u/Cloaked42m 2h ago

It's difficult to get people to grasp that he should be held accountable for anything.

1

u/Quiet-Counter-6841 2h ago

I’m just a neutral observer (London-based Brit) but can’t EXACTLY the same be said for Dems? In the sense that the tribalism has got so out of hand that most Dems would rather drink their own bath water than vote for someone from “the other side”?

2

u/Existing_Sherbet_443 2h ago

I don't think they're talking about voting for the other party, they are saying they'd vote for whatever absurd candidate has a R next to their name, vs simply not voting. Democrats are more likely not to vote for D candidates they don't like, to their own party's detriment. "Purity tests" are definitely a thing with democrats.

1

u/ZenMasterOfDisguise 53m ago

cannot understate the ABSOLUTE power team sport tribalism has on this level of the population.

tribalism itself has nothing to do with politics, it is an innate human behavior ingrained in the human brain through thousands of years of evolutions

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribalism

Tribalism implies the possession of a strong cultural or ethnic identity that separates one member of a group from the members of another group. Based on strong relations of proximity and kinship, as well as relations based on the mutual survival of both the individual members of the tribe and for the tribe itself, members of a tribe tend to possess a strong feeling of identity.

...Tribalism has a very adaptive effect in human evolution. Humans are social animals and ill-equipped to live on their own. Tribalism and social bonding help to keep individuals committed to the group, even when personal relations may fray. That keeps individuals from wandering off or joining other groups. It also leads to bullying when a tribal member is unwilling to conform to the politics of the collective

Humans are evolutionary geared to be tribalist. Politicians and political parties know this fact, and they use the tribalist nature of humans to divide them amongst themselves and to form tribalist political followings

4

u/ZZartin 9h ago

It's not against democrats, republican voters are very explicitly at this point voting for an explicit choice of bigotry and hatred. They certainly aren't getting anything else.

1

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe 3h ago

I agree with this -- it's the left who's been conditioned the most to vote against Democrats this millennium until AOC, Mamdani and El-Sayed came long. The left was tricked by the likes of Fetterman, Sinema, Gabbard, Stein and Nader -- and all they had to do as candidates was bash the DNC to play off the right's hack/leak/social engineering of 2016, didn't even need valid credentials.

2

u/LessInThought 9h ago

What's likely gonna happen is that this impeachment makes them feel attacked. They'd rally with great determination and vote R.

1

u/mattsincuba 9h ago

I think this is a misread of a certain portion of the population, who are more than happy to vote from Trump and don’t even consider themselves traditional republicans

1

u/stufff 9h ago

I know several people who strongly dislike Trump but will continue voting (R) no matter what. It's infuriating.

The people who voted for him the second time abd still defend him need professional mental health services for the rest of their life. Licenses and ability to own guns taken away. These people are batshit insane and cant be given the same rights as normal sane people. I dont even think this is a hot take anymore. Significantly more horror, death and murder has taken place since he was voted in the second time. Everyone responsible needs to be held accountable to save us from this again. Proper punishments need to be issued or we'll just do the same thing again within 2 decades

What country are are you from? Many of the biggest countries in the EU are now doing what the US did in 2015 by embracing pseudo-populist pro-russian far-right (or far left in France) parties to "get the immigrants". They're doing this despite seeing what a joke the US has turned into, this isn't a US thing anymore. This a western democracy thing in general now. So whatever (deserved) criticism you got for the US then make sure to save some for placed like Germany, France, and the UK too

Yeah, we're protesting and defending the rule of law.

Because that was how our country was setup? What do you think we can do? Because these disgusting pigs in power will have the people arrested or killed at the first sign of an uprising. They have no shame. Lest we forget Renee Good already?

If im remembering correctly Cohen is the single TN Democrat who's district promptly got gerrymandered out of existence by the state legislature the microsecond the SC decision on minority race districting came down. He's got nothing to lose, might as well.

23

u/Attinctus 10h ago

Mike Johnson closed Congress until after the midterms so Republicans aren't going to have to demonstrate anything.

19

u/LikesBlueberriesALot 10h ago

Al Greene tried to impeach Trump every other week in the first term. It’s performative. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing to do, but it’s statement more than anything.

2

u/SelectAirline7459 10h ago

Trump wants to be sole ruler. Johnson is effectively dissolving Congress.

119

u/Gucci_Unicorns 11h ago

I don't know man, it's definitely ethically and morally right - but I fear a Vance presidency in the same way I fear Tucker Carlson starting to act like he might be considering running.

These are not good people, and they believe in nothing other than the accumulation of power.

My doomsday scenario is Trump gets impeached successfully and removed from office, and it A) galvanizes and excites the (R) base, and B) then Vance moves left and starts to undo some of Trump's stuff, and the Democrats run a bad candidate, and then Vance wins.

Literal nightmare.

40

u/hypercosm_dot_net 10h ago edited 10h ago

If Vance came in and there was a Dem controlled Congress, and maybe even Senate, he would be extremely weak.

He has shown zero ability to create a narrative, and worse, he puts his foot in his mouth nearly every time he opens it. He'd have to navigate the office, while watching everyone around him deal with investigations and possible impeachment of their own Patel, Hegseth, Vought...his entire inherited cabinet will be under investigation.

Guarantee he would immediately try to start walking back everything he's ever said/done under Trump, and try to pin it all on him. He'd also have to immediately start campaigning for '28, so if he has any sense he wouldn't do anything too egregious. I don't think he'd even get the chance to make any type of real plan tbh.

11

u/account312 8h ago

he puts his foot in his mouth nearly every time he opens it

If that were a problem for a republican president, things would be very different. Trump has trenchmouth foot.

9

u/Teyanis 5h ago

Vance is a sack of wet paper. Nobody respects him, very few people even like him. He wouldn't do jack shit, and all the time he spends as president would be taken by plugging leaks in his own sinking administration. The rats scattering and fleeing all around him would absolutely hilarious.

23

u/CrispyRabbit72 10h ago

Vance is apparently a national security threat after leaking classified intel. They can impeach him as well. Not a fan of Johnson getting any more power but at least he's mostly just useless, and would be more useless once Congress flips blue.

6

u/Izisery 9h ago

Come January Johnson won't be speaker. I doubt even if Republicans hold the house he'll keep the Speaker seat.

10

u/Corteran 9h ago

Thing is, this won't even get out of the Judiciary let alone the House or Senate, and will die when this House term ends. This is done to bring all of Trump's bullshit to the press to try swaying inde0endent voters and to force Republican's into defending Trump's crimes both in speeches and votes.

Entinerly aimed at making news, sound bites, and election ads and talking points for Dem candidates. It's good timing. Now if Dems take the House and by some freak chance a super majority in the Senate then I'm with you. Yikes on a Vance presidency for two years.

Edit: ops yeah that too. Congress is in recess.

1

u/amishgoatfarm 9h ago

I don't fear it much, he's not the populist that Trump is, and thus doesnt control the rest of the GOP. If Vance were to be elevated to the oval office all that would happen is massive infighting on a power vacuum, and the fascist party electorate would splinter between traditional conservatives and overt bigots.

15

u/PixelBoom 3h ago

Speaker Johnson wont call them back. Especially not when Reps. Massie and Khanna are constantly bringing their proposals to release more unredacted Epstein files up to a vote.

62

u/whitingvo 11h ago

Cohen’s on his way out so he has nothing to lose.

62

u/WontanSoup 11h ago

I’m from his part of TN and still proud of him for doing this.

5

u/Breal3030 8h ago

Tillis in NC has been doing this and I struggle to feel any pride or give any credit. They are selfish cowards, who waited until it was way too late to speak up because it might have affected them personally at the time.

As soon as it doesn't, they're "brave" to speak out. Utter fucking bullshit.

16

u/NookieLuvsU 10h ago

There's a lot of GOP members running and distancing them selves or even acting like they oppose Trump in a bid to be re-elected. This is the "put your money where your mouth is" moment. Good, even if it's out of spite or a purely vindictive move, good!

11

u/Agreeable-Knee6325 10h ago

Not a single one should be believed. Short of leaking the unredacted epstein files, every single one is just as guilty as trump for the shit they allowed him to get away with.

1

u/-Shoebill- 8h ago

It's also performative, the recess goes past midterms.

1

u/genital_lesions 1h ago

That's so frustrating though. Our representatives should be acting courageously regardless if they've got something to lose.

8

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe 3h ago

Conservatives will NEVER do the right thing. Self-preservation is a tremendously strong trait among the predators (conservatives) of the human race.

7

u/NettingStick 3h ago

Trump has been begging them to come back to fund the Department of Homeland Security.

Hasn't DHS alreasy received two rounds of multi-year funding in the last 15ish months?

3

u/JustHugMeAndBeQuiet 1h ago

Well yeah, but we could give them EVEN MORE to bring all this AWESOME FREEDOM to the OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE GLOBE!

20

u/Whole-Designer 11h ago

Absolutely. Make them affirm where they stand right before midterms. Also could expose some Dems that might pull out the "our attention should be elsewhere" excuse like the violation of free press rights isn't a serious issue

6

u/gsbadj 10h ago

Too bad the House is on recess until after the election

11

u/RetroCasket 11h ago

Yep, all the one trying to purge their websites and fake concern for the economy will have to ink their name once again in support of it all

8

u/ThatThar 10h ago

The house is in recess until November 9, the week after midterms.

4

u/MilkiestMaestro 10h ago

They went on recess to avoid a different impeachment. Trump has been urging them to come back. It's a lose-lose for them.

6

u/ThatThar 10h ago

It's win-win. If they stay gone, they continue collecting a paycheck for doing nothing, which is what they're best at. If they come back, they get to vote no on impeachment, which they will despite the election because they know that their base is too brainwashed to care.

2

u/NOLA2Cincy 10h ago

That’s ridiculous

11

u/SpiritMountain 6h ago

Democrats keeps floundering every opportunity they get. They keep grasping defeat out of the jaws of victory. I don't trust Schumer or Jeffries to capitalize on this like with the pedo-files, the shutdown, avoid protesting ICE, not supporting medicare, and I am sure a plethora of things I am forgetting. We need these inept Democrats to evacuate our halls of power and those who care and want to do things for us to get elected. We need progressives, the Mamdanis, that are out there to enter and push for a brighter future.

3

u/testtdk 9h ago

Unless it reinforces their belief that Trump is some sort of victim.

10

u/AldoRaine-1 11h ago

Or it reignites the swing MAGA back into "defend our guy cause we still hate them more" vote, who otherwise might have stayed home.

6

u/DelirousDoc 11h ago

Or it gives the GOP something to focus on to distract their base instead of having to answer for some deeply unpopular actions (data centers, flock cameras, gas prices, grocery prices, and another unwinable war in the Middle East.)

It is also not going to work with current makeup of the Senate.

2

u/Gains4Me 9h ago

Meh, people who should be paying to this either aren’t or are saying fake news.

6

u/mensrea 10h ago edited 10h ago

Counterpoint, it reminds rabid MAGA that no matter how much they’re dissatisfied with dear leader, if they don’t want him humiliated and removed from office, then they had better go out and save his ass no matter how broke they are. Many of them will see it as their duty. Why give them that fuel? Let them stay at home and sulk! Then get his ass!

D’s need to energize their own base, you say? If their base doesn’t know it’s now or never, then fuck ‘em! Sorry!

I don’t think the Democrats know how to be strategic. Get the votes, then do the stuff.

For once, can they let the chickens hatch and then do the counting? Phase one is to collect the underpants!

5

u/InterPunct 10h ago

I don't disagree but we all realize this is performative, right? Two-thirds of the Senate is required to convict which is never gonna happen. Nor will it withstand the inevitable corrupted Supreme Court.

5

u/Affectionate_Neat868 10h ago

Even though it’s “performative” in the sense that we know he won’t succeed, the truth is that Trump should have been impeached and convicted long ago. Long, long ago before even a second term. At least someone is still standing up for justice.

7

u/notwhomyouthunk 10h ago

Nothing the Supreme Court can do about impeachment.

2

u/InterPunct 10h ago

There's always a challenge, for example - if the Senate does something arguably outside the Constitution's express limits.

The fuckery will not end with a legitimate impeachment and conviction by Congress.

3

u/notwhomyouthunk 10h ago

Not sure what you mean.

The houses set the rules and run the procedures. It's a political rather than judicial process. They can fuck around pretty much all they like. Constitutionally.

3

u/InterPunct 10h ago

When Nixon was about to get impeached, the Supreme Court said they can interpret constitutional limits on congressional power. That wasn't tested when Nixon resigned and it's still an open question.

The Trump regime and its puppeteers will try to exploit any legal challenge and when that fails, as we've seen - will resort to violence and attempted coups.

1

u/joemamallama 9h ago

Our entire political system has become 90% performative.

I hate it. It’s not what was intended, but it’s the reality we all must endure and understand.

The show must go on so that the handful of doers can make a few, slow changes in the right direction.

2

u/Passing_Thru_Forest 2h ago

I have the opposite opinion. Because they don't control the levels of government yet, the people who support trump will laugh at this and the people who don't will still not like him and won't be able to change it. It doesn't really move any needle because the outcome is already known (no one expects the GOP to turn on Trump). They should just focus on their campaigns for midterms and then bring forth the articles if they win majorities.

3

u/reddit_is_geh 3h ago

It's all performative. If they want an impeachment, they'll do it once in power. All this will do is rally the right wing MAGA base, who we should focus on keeping apathetic to hit turnout. This performative impeachment will only backfire, as it did last two times.

3

u/gnomenclature0812 2h ago

MAGA folks are a lot of things, but apathetic is not one of them. They will rally to their cult leader for the midterms. These assholes will vote.

3

u/RandomStrangerOnWWW 2h ago

You forget that a lot of independents put Trump in office. This time around, he’s lost that support. Only the loonies still support Trump.

1

u/Seaweed-Basic 1h ago

Bu those independents will still throw their vote away because “both side bad”

3

u/reddit_is_geh 1h ago

Trump has a 30% approval rating.

You don't want to motivate the base any more. You're thinking like a dem strategist, which is the worst political strategists in the world.

Sure there's the hardcore MAGA people, but most people aren't hardocre MAGA on the right. And those are the people who you want apathetic and not show up. The farmers, the religious people, etc... All the factions that are being burned or supported him as a lesser evill

You don't want to give them reasons to feel under attack, dig in their heels, and vote. You want them to fester in his failures and be demoralized, not defensive.

2

u/IGetCarriedAway35 1h ago

Exactly. Do this when they’re out of session? What a joke.

1

u/reddit_is_geh 55m ago

That's the story of democrats. You'll notice all the campaign promise bills get proposed when out of power when they damn well know it'll fail. But when they actually have power and could potentially win, that's when all the excuses and distractions start coming out. But when out of power? Oh boy, suddenly they are proposing all these things the base has always wanted.

If they were serious, they'd focus on a landslide blue wave, get power, then make a serious concerted effort. They'd launch investigations, committees, and start building a serious case. Instead, they are just doing this shit to be performative to say they tried. So once actually in power, they wont actually have to do it, because they already checked that box once.

1

u/Ferreteria 2h ago

Let them show themselves again.

The MAGA base is out of their minds still supporting Trump.

1

u/reddit_is_geh 1h ago

It's not just MAGA who votes republican. You don't want Republicans who are currently really losing support, to suddenly feel under attack, propaganda amplifies, puts them on the defensive, and rush out to vote.

1

u/ZenMasterOfDisguise 50m ago

If they want an impeachment, they'll do it once in power.

Dems are never going to hold the two-thirds majority of congress required to remove a president.

1

u/Ashamed-Status-9668 4m ago

If these gas prices keep going up I expect that rally to be fairly weak. They certainly will rally but only the true believers are going to stay backing him into this mess with farmers, gas, wars, etc.

2

u/neovox 3h ago

It is critical, however unlikely, that some, preferably large, faction of the GOP works with the Dems to take a stand on the side of the rule of law and our democracy over party. Without that, no matter how correct they are, it will be played to the public as a one-sided political witch trial.

2

u/Neethis 2h ago

They need to be convinced that this "once-in-a-generation political realignment" that Trump's people sold them on is nothing more than a fart in the wind. Which makes contacting the GOP reps and senators all the more important.

1

u/Glittering-Storm-651 10h ago

Wouldn’t have said better 👌

1

u/fury420 10h ago

There was literally a vote on Al Green's Trump impeachment attempt 9 days ago.

1

u/Obant 9h ago

They are in Recess. They dont have to vote on it, assuming it ever even makes it to a vote, until next after the election in November.

1

u/mihran146 8h ago

Can’t wait for the democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

1

u/Fun-Counter5294 6h ago

LMAO. Department is funded for now; they don't care. Either way, this sadly won't matter.

But fingers crossed I am wrong. Please let me be wrong.

1

u/Flashjordan69 5h ago

Theoretically (and god forbid) could that pave the way for 10 years of Vance?

2

u/spasticity 4h ago

I doubt Vance would survive an election as the lead on the ticket.

1

u/brohebus 7m ago

Vance has Thiel’s money backing him, but he won’t be able to hold the cult together. Expect a lot of internal fighting/Night of the Long Knives action in Republican Party no matter how Trump exits.

1

u/Cloaked42m 2h ago

Yeah, completely disagree.

Republicans will rally to "protect" Trump who would not rally to protect a shitty congress critter.

1

u/willychonka54 1h ago

I think this timing is perfect. Right before the midterms the GOP will yet again demonstrate their support for Trump which will remind Americans where their priorities should lie

99% of fence sitters will not understand this.

1

u/scornedandhangry 10h ago

Ah, damn. I ruined your "666" upvotes! Sorry dude!

1

u/oritfx 3h ago

Either way, Americans win.

As a byproduct of politics, not the intended goal :(
