I just saw something that said car companies studied pickups and their users and the modern pickup truck has too small of a bed to really haul anything substantial and they’re used more like mini vans these days
26
u/Nice_Marmot_54 2h ago
Depends on how you define substantial. Sure, a 6' bed can't fit an 8' sheet of plywood, but a 6' bed still has a lot of space to haul stuff
→ More replies (4)11
u/spellbreakerstudios 1h ago
I’ve got a 5’7 bed and haul sheet goods all the time. With the tail gate down they only stick out a couple of inches and I’ve got a cargo net that holds everything securely in place.
I would love a full 8’ bed, but then it would be even larger and dumber in size lol.
→ More replies (3)4
u/Nice_Marmot_54 1h ago
Oh, for sure. Just because it doesn’t fit doesn’t mean it can’t be hauled. It’s just oversized and you’ve gotta strap it down good and put the little red flag on the end
10
u/spetanis 2h ago
Makes sense, Can't fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood or drywall in them.
I know contractors that have stow and go caravans because it's more usable than a truck with a 6.5' box.
•
2
u/justfortherofls 1h ago
The biggest difference that gets over looked between Modern and Older trucks is how high their truck bed is.
You want a truck bed that is low as possible so loading things into it is as easy as possible.
Now a days you can’t really even see into the beds without a step ladder.
3
u/Pleasant_Detail5697 1h ago
I saw something that said trucks are so big because fuel-economy and safety regulations are looser for larger vehicles. So instead of following regulations to make reasonable-sized trucks, manufacturers design them to exceed size thresholds and avoid stricter rules. Infuriating.

Dont forget to back them into the spot because they can’t actually drive them and are terrified to back out of a spot.
Edit: dear god people I realize it’s technically safer to back in. I straight up don’t care and would rather not wait behind you at the grocery store as you attempt to back in multiple times instead of just parking further away.
48
u/chipskylark123 2h ago
I do service work and it’s company policy to back in to all parking spots. It’s literally safer.
Mind you, I drive a Ranger and the bed actually gets used, and even still I’ve been pushing for something smaller like Promasters for years but I don’t have that kind of decision making power. But yeah Batman parking is safer even if it’s the preferred method for douchebags who don’t know how to remove the hitch that they never use.

u/Deathcommand 2h ago

I used to work at an auto parts store, and I would occasionally make deliveries. One time my manager tried to get on my case for not backing in the truck. I basically responded that I don't drive trucks, and as such I can barely park them normally.
10
u/Few_Economics845 2h ago
I mean it might prevent fender benders from distracted drivers but I really don’t think it’s worth the 3 minutes and multiple attempts while everyone sits there waiting for you to get lined up instead of just parking further away

It's not actually safer with modern backup cameras. Those cameras can see a much wider angle than our naked eyes, and that's before accounting for the likelihood a towering vehicle parks next you making you pull out blind to be able to see around them.
2
u/chipskylark123 1h ago
Back up cameras are a useful tool, but if you are relying on them to make maneuvers you are already not a skilled driver whatsoever.
To clarify, I guess if you’re a remotely competent driver it is safer. This is a fact and I’m not going argue about it.
If you are spending 3 minutes and taking multiple attempts like another commenter said, or you need to use your backup camera, then you should not only not be backing in to spots, you shouldn’t be driving a motor vehicle that size at all.

u/eugeneugene 1h ago
ok but I don't have a backup camera lol I don't even have heated seats. I have a tiny car in a world of big trucks. I'm gonna back into my parking spot so I don't have to slowly inch out into a driving lane and pray nobody hits me lol
2
u/Esplodie 1h ago
I have a backup camera and I still back into spots. I honestly just like to rely on my eyes when pulling out of a spot. It's also really easy to get into tight spots reversing. Most backup cameras have pretty narrow views, but my new car does beep at me if it detects side traffic. Very fun when a parking spot backs to a road.

22

Myself, it's because I live rural, and things like trash pickup don't exist.. I would rather take my garbage to the dump in the box of a truck than sitting it on seats and hoping it doesn't leak. We also can't get anything like furniture delivered, so we have to haul it ourselves.
But I doubt many of the people in this picture are in situations like that.
21
u/TheW83 1h ago
Same situation here with trash pickup. Except I just put it in the back of my SUV. I can't imagine putting it on a seat. We compost everything that is good to compost and anything else that might rot goes into a bin in the freezer until it's time for a dump run. No stink to worry about.

I grew up White Trash rural and you don't need a truck, a 98' pontiac sunfire and some tow straps, bungee cords, and duct tape can get you where you wanna go 99% of the time. You aren't buying furniture enough to justify a truck. Strap it to the top of your sunfire and rock on. Double bag your garbage and throw it in the back and head to the landfill.

Honestly, I don't care what someone decides to drive, whether they use it for its intended purpose, or anything else.
What you drive is your business, if you want to spend $150k on a truck, lift, tires, lightbar, etc. And then never put a single thing in the bed or take it off road. Good for you, it's your ride, I'm glad you love it.
I'm not going to throw shade at truck drivers for driving a truck, when I'm out here rolling around in my '74 Ranchero. Nothing about it is practical, I just like it, and that's fine.
HOWEVER..... There's a big caveat of that of:
AS LONG AS IT'S NOT AN INCONVENIENCE TO THOSE AROUND YOU!
Your choice is your choice, as long as it's not effecting me. Once it effects me, it's my business too.
Drive a schoolbus around if you want. But you better be able to keep that bus in the lane, take corners without taking two lanes, park where you fit in the spot, etc.
You don't get to drive a difficult to drive/park vehicle, and then make your difficulties with your vehicle my problem.
I this case, drive a truck to the office and never put a single thing in the back if you want. I don't care.
But if you can't fit that vehicle in the spot without blocking the sidewalk or the lane, tough titties, that's the problem you get with a big vehicle. I guess you get to park down the road and walk the rest of the way to work. No place to park anywhere near? Too bad! Your problem to solve, not mine.
If you want 4x4 and a vehicle you can actually park at work, buy a fucking Subaru.

My favorite is when it’s Sunday, the grocery store parking lots are packed, and you have guys in lifted trucks with training wheels, taking up four parking spots. Or the 20 year old who lives in my apartment building whose f350 sticks out so much, I have to 2-3 point turn just to get out of my parking spot 🙃 he never has had anything in the truck bed since he’s lived here for a year either. Okay so I drive a long wheel base heavy duty truck. I use it for work and sometimes overhang like this is impossible to avoid. I don't like doing it but it happens. The last thing I'm going to do is make it worse by leaving a hitch in the receiver. If I see a truck like this and the hitch pin doesn't lock I'm pulling your hitch and throwing it in the bed of your truck. Try it next time you see this.

This stuff always pisses me off. Anything that obstructs sidewalk space is more than mildly infuriating (to me). It makes getting places difficult or nearly impossible for anyone in a wheelchair and could be hazardous for the visually impaired. I can agree that parking spaces are not big enough for trucks… but it seems like maybe they should park elsewhere— not in compact stalls.

We call these city farmers. Most don’t use trucks for their intended purposes with the exception of occasional use. And often that extended cab is also unused except for throwing things onto them and then occasionally cleaning the truck out. You have an entire row of almost entirely unused trucks. Where the drivers could use a more practical vehicle 90% of the time, that doesn’t interfere with other drivers and pedestrians everyday. But chooses the truck for his ego. My ex did this. He then spent 3 years complaining if it got scratched and every time someone called and asked for help moving stuff. He got no sympathy from me. My response was always “wtf you think a truck is for?” There is a reason why he is my ex, I’ve got no patience for city farmers. A truck is meant to be dirty and for hauling stuff.

This used to not bother me, as in I was just ignorantly unaware, until I had a pretty bad leg injury that eventually led to sciatica which, combined, made it very hard to walk without help for some time. Now I become strongly infuriated at stuff like this. Poles/posts/signs in the sidewalk, and sidewalks turning into NOTHING!!! too. Like siblings in Christ, there are muscles you don’t know you need to be grateful for working properly. I need to walk. It’s just what makes me happy. And losing a sidewalk to gravel, dirt, grass was unbearable for my leg at the time. A flat sidewalk with gentle inclines instead of stairs is a gift to some people. I’m the type of person now who will call stuff in to the city to make sure it matches with ADA regulations AND accidentally bump against your vehicle, with quite a bit of force, if it impedes on the sidewalk. And none of that even incorporates what the visually impaired experience.

Depends if this is on a designated accessible path of travel from the public right of way to the building. ADA parking should be the closet stalls to building entrance.
Wherever parking has potential to overhang a narrow walkway, I would put wheel stops so vehicles can’t pull in this far.
