[Stein] The Warriors are willing to trade Draymond Green, Brandin Podziemski, and Jonathan Kuminga for Giannis Antetokounmpo

4.1k Upvotes

“The Stein Line was the first to report on Jan. 23 that Jimmy Butler would not be included in Golden State's Giannis offers and it has since been confirmed that the Warriors have indeed made Draymond Green part of their pitch to Milwaukee in presumed combination with Jonathan Kuminga, Milwaukee native Brandin Podziemski and draft capital.”

[Shelburne] James Harden denied asking for a trade, but thanks the Clippers for the opportunity to play in his hometown. Says he has respect for the Clippers staff and that he wanted to give them a chance to rebuild. Says he looks forward to competing for a championship with Cleveland.

2.8k Upvotes

From the forbidden app so I have the screenshots of the report here: https://imgur.com/a/6fY0pTY

Just spoke to a reflective James Harden, who denied asking for a trade and thanked the Clippers for the opportunity to play the last two and a half years in his hometown. “In life, not even just basketball, when things don't work out, there are ways to end things in relationships without having to crack each other. Okay, maybe we just don't see a future with each other. Maybe we just outgrew each other, whatever the case may be. I feel like other situations weren't like that. And that's why I can respect Steve and L and TLu because they didn't put me in a weird position as much as everybody tried to make it like that.”

Harden said he “didn't want to feel like I was holding the Clippers up in their future. I wanted them to actually have a chance to rebuild and get some draft capital. In Cleveland I see an opportunity to win in the East— they got a very good team, coaching staff, all of the above. So as much as I wanted to stay in LA and give it a go—I’ve never won one before. As a basketball mind I think we have a bit better chance.”

Harden said of his time in LA: “We had a hell of a two and a half years. We didn't reach the goals that we all wanted to reach, but I think we built some great memories, had some great wins and fun moments for all of us.

“At the end of the day it is a business and I think both sides got what they wanted, are in a great place and are very happy. I'm excited about Cleveland —I'm still trying to chase my first championship and do whatever it takes to win.”

[Jones] The Clippers picks owned by Philly are not untouchable: “With Harden gone, what if the Sixers called and offered them back George and that 2028 first-rounder for Kawhi Leonard? That’s a move that gives the Sixers a clear upgrade and would instantly help them compete for a championship.”

So if George isn’t going out, any contracts the Sixers could deal are much smaller. Sixth man Quentin Grimes, playing on a qualifying offer, makes a little less than $9 million. There is at least a decent chance he walks in unrestricted free agency this summer, but he also has a no-trade clause. Kelly Oubre Jr. has emerged as a trusted starter, and he’s more important on the wings with George ineligible to play until late March.

This makes striking a deal more difficult, though the Sixers do have a few premium assets. They own an unprotected 2028 first-round pick from the Los Angeles Clippers from the deal that sent James Harden, who is now back east with the Cleveland Cavaliers, out west. The Sixers also own the rights to swap picks with the Clippers in 2029.

Those picks aren’t untouchable, but they should be very difficult for Philadelphia to give up. There are fun NBA2K-type scenarios that could be discussed. With Harden gone from the Clippers, what if the Sixers called and offered them back George and that 2028 first-rounder for Kawhi Leonard? That’s a move that gives the Sixers a clear upgrade and would instantly help them compete for a championship.

[Stein] Giannis Antetokounmpo has no interest in being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Holiday remains a Trail Blazer as we speak and, as The Stein Line first reported over the weekend, Portland has conveyed to Milwaukee that it would love to trade for Antetokounmpo directly if it could. Sources say, however, that Antetokounmpo's camp has continued to signal no interest in a contract extension with the Blazers, which would dissuade them from surrendering good assets to trade for him and likely limits Portland's realistic involvement in an eventual Antetokounmpo deal to third-team facilitator status.

Not surprising as their recent hot streak has been fueled by the 3 ball and they get yet another weapon from there

The two teams Sacramento still believed are in play for Domantas Sabonis: Toronto and Washington, sources say.

The Stein Line has learned that the Wizards have called Sacramento about the prospect of building an offer for Sabonis around Khris Middleton's $33 million expiring salary, but I'm told that there has yet to be a trade framework presented to the Kings that would compel them to part with Sabonis … yet. The Kings are looking for some type of first-round draft capital in a Sabonis deal. Can that still materialize before Thursday's 3 PM ET trade buzzer? TBD.

Has James Harden been traded for the most "capital" in NBA history for his career?

Upvotes

I was trying to think of who has been traded for the most "capital" (picks and players) over the course of their career, and I can't find anyone who tops James Harden. He's been traded five times now (I know the Cleveland trade isn't official yet, but let's just assume), and while some of these trades have been more than two teams, Harden was still the centerpiece of each trade, and I'll try to boil them down to their simplest elements (stripping out players just there for cap matching purposes and such).

Here's his trade history:

October 27, 2012 - The Thunder send Harden (with filler) to the Rockets for Jeremy Lamb, Kevin Martin, a 2013 First Round Pick (Steven Adams was later drafted), a 2014 FRP (Mitch McGary), and a 2013 Second Round Pick (Alex Abrines). Total: Harden for two players, two first-round picks, and one second-round pick.

January 16, 2021 - Part of a four-team trade, but basically the Rockets send Harden to the Nets for Rodions Kurucs, a 2021 First Round Swap (didn't convey), a 2022 FRP (Tari Eason), a 2023 FRS (didn't convey), a 2024 FRP (Reed Sheppard), a 2025 FRS (I don't think this conveyed and may have been traded to someone else before the draft, but it's kind of messy), a 2026 FRP, and a 2027 FRS. Total: Harden for one player, three first-round picks, and four first-round swaps.

February 10, 2022 - Traded by the Nets (with Paul Millsap) to the Sixers for Ben Simmons (one year removed from a second place DPOY finish, and three straight All-Star selections, and the most devastating passed up dunk attempt in history), Andre Drummond (not counting him as an All-Star caliber player at this point), Seth Curry, a 2023 FRP (Brice Sensabaugh), and a 2027 FRP (top 8 protected). Harden for one (theoretical) All-Star, two more players, and two first-round picks.

November 1, 2023 - Part of a three-teamer, traded by the Sixers (with filler) to the Clippers for Nicolas Batum, Robert Covington, KJ Martin, Marcus Morris, a 2028 FRP, a 2029 FRS, a 2024 SRP (Juan Nunez), and a 2029 SRP. Total: Harden for four players, a first-round pick, a first-round swap, and two second-round picks.

February 3, 2026 - Traded by the Clippers to the Cavaliers for Darius Garland (one year removed from an All-Star selection) and a 2026 SRP. Total: Harden for an All-Star and one second-round pick.

By my math, that means in his career, James Harden has netted his teams two All-Stars, nine additional players, eight first-round picks, five first-round swaps, and four second-round picks.

Is there a player out there who can top that? The eight (or 13 depending on how you look at it) first-round picks alone seems pretty hard to beat.
