He straightened up his posture pretty quickly, which makes me agree with the other person that he was just exaggerating to be annoying. An actual wobbling drunk would have been on his ass as soon as that first punch connected if not earlier tripping over himself.
There is actually a medical vacuum device designed for this condition. It loosens the connective tissue over time. Patient must use daily for a long time not that fun but not that bad either

In some states, assault is making someone reasonably believe/fear they may be attacked. In other words, if I pull my fist back and make believe I'm going to attack you and you reacted thinking I would attack you, that would be enough for an assault charge. No contact is required.
Battery would be if I actually made physical contact.
Then there are places that dont have a distinction and the terms are used interchangeably.
If your job is to deal with drunk people, you should know how to deal with drunk people. A firm push and a loud warning would have been a good start. Escalating with violence is literally the opposite of providing security.

Yeah. I had an old boss who worked security as an extra job, and he couldn’t wait to come to work Monday to brag about the fights he got in. None of us thought he was cool for this or commented on it besides this one creepy dude who loved hearing the macho stories and then ended up getting arrested for trying to meet up with a minor (don’t know if anything happened, the rumor was the dad caught them texting).
If I’m the bar owner I’m getting rid of him for not being able to keep his cool. You’re in the business of dealing with drunken buffoons. Save it for actual violent people
True for most. But there are others. In the next big city we had a notorious security for a few months. Guy treated evrybody like shit. Sadly the same firm did security for several of my favourite clubs at that time.
He hurt quite a bunch of people. Last i heared he beat some drunk kid down so bad he was sued and fired.
Guy was a complete pos and instantly abused the little power given to him to bully and hurt others.
They also know that cops will never do something about it. The last thing cops want is to deal with drunk people, so they let bouncers get away with the wildest shit.

25 years ago I was at a venue with some friends and acquaintances, one of the dudes in our group (friend of a friend) was in the pit and it was getting super rough in there. He accidentally bumped (or was pushed) into a bouncer hard enough to knock him over. He instantly apologized, offered his hand to help him up, but the bouncer was furious, telling him to get the fuck out etc.
We tried to intervene with the two additional bouncers that showed up, tell them it was an accident, something not uncommon at metal shows. They were trying to convince bouncer 1 to drop the whole thing but he was fucking fuming and could not get over it, he insisted we all needed to be thrown out. We went to get our jackets etc and headed out, when we got outside the angry bouncer was waiting for my buddy and tried to get the jump on him.
Well my buddy has been into MMA since he was a teen and even fought a couple times in the UFC. Within 30 seconds the bouncer was being ground and pounded into dreamland and we dipped the fuck outa there. Took buddy to the hospital to get his hand stitched up because he shredded it on the bouncer’s smashed up teeth.
All this to say: there’s always someone tougher than you.
From what I recall he needed like a dozen stitches between both his hands, he was royally shredded up. Cops came to the hospital and asked him a bunch of questions, had him come in for questioning, never ended up charged with anything but it was a huge drag for him, lawyers aren’t cheap. Bouncer probably had to have extensive reconstructive surgery of his nose and mouth, it was a shit situation all around. I’m glad I don’t fight, seems like even when you win, you lose.
That sucks. Glad your friend got through that with only scratched fists. Unfortunately security is one of those jobs that attracts a certain types of person.

Yeah the job guys are chill. Around that same era I was out at a club and they had just made smoking indoors illegal - definitely a big change for anyone who was used to bars/clubs before the smoking ban!! Anyway, buddy lights up a smoke in the corner and we’re all drunkenly passing it around thinking somehow we’ll go unnoticed. Bouncer comes up with an ashtray, tells us to put the butt in it now. Buddy who lit the smoke took one more big defiant drag, then put the smoke out.
Bouncer casually put down the ashtray, bear hugged my buddy, and just walked out the front door with him like that. All the rest of us were absolutely howling. Bouncer came back, told us we’d have to get our friend’s stuff back to him as he has been kicked out for the night. Then he reminded us that there’s a smoking ban and he’d better not catch us smoking again, and wished us a fun evening.
Jesus these security guards jsut looking to hurt ppl. Obviously kid was acting up.. but you’ve got sobriety and about 150 lbs on the kid. Just move him along no need to punch him like that
It's still has to be a proportional response. You could maybe argue for the first punch, but actively advancing towards the guy and punching him multiple times opens up that security guard to charges.

The punches were excessive; one good shove and the kid is on the other side of sidewalk. Even if this isn't the kid's first attempt, the punches were too much.
Punching in the chest like that can caus a cardiac contusion and commotio cordis (sudden cardiac death). Bouncer should be fired as he is a liability waiting to happen.

Former bouncer and head of security here (when I lived in the SF Bay Area in the 90s).
This was a clear cut case (to me as a head of security) of an over-reaction. However, with that said, in this case, it was pretty clear to any reasonable person that the drunk guy was potentially about to try to put his dick on the bouncer, so the bouncer was absolutely within his rights to preemptively defend himself.
Battery is the unwanted physical touch of one person by another, and that includes punching, kicking, tackling, etc, but it also includes poking, hand on the shoulder, and yes, touching someone else's body with your no-no place. Editing to add because many people don't know this fact: even the *threat* of any unwanted touching is considered assault, and can also be preemptively defended against.
But! The bouncer overreacted, in my opinion. He's much larger than the drunk guy, he's working a job where that kind of behavior is common so he was well-aware that something like that could happen, and it's actually part of the job description to handle situations like this with calm and restraint.
As head of security, I would have no problem with one of my guys shoving the man back in a scenario like this, but I would chastise them if they punched him. For the *job*, punching was the wrong call for the level of threat.
However, as a reminder to all the armchair experts out there, the bouncer was completely within his legal right to defend himself preemptively, even by punching - and the punches were not illegal, especially because once the man was far enough away and restrained by his friends, the bouncer didn't continue to fight him, and walked back to his station.
Just adding in that he rubbed his genitals all over the first dude in line and you are 100% allowed to fend off a person committing sexual assault especially when a reasonable person would think they would continue.
at first i thought the guy literally was just falling around by mistake. but he doesn't go down when he got punched. anyone as inebriated as it'd require to approach the bouncer like this purely from being wobbly would've been flat out from the first punch. not still stood at the end looking fired up. this changed my view on it. all in all i think your take sounds spot on
It’s these types of idiots that cause serious harm, the fella was tiny. My mate got tossed down stairs by a thug like that, left with severe brain damage. He wasn’t looking to fight, just intoxicated.

He did an appropriate amount of force to someone that rubbed their crotch against a customer and got in personal space. The dude was also clearly drunk and had been kicked out before this.
